About this property

Old Sawpit - Two Bedroom Apartment, Sleeps 4

Steeped in history, The Old Sawpit is the upper floor of a traditional stone Lakeland building which lies above an original saw pit where cartwheels were made by the Elterwater Wheelwrights.

Located in the picturesque village of Elterwater, this cottage has been a long time favourite for walkers enjoying strolls along the river or taking on the challenge of more strenuous walks. Relax with a glass of wine on the iron bench, at the top of the Old Sawpit steps, watching the sheep graze on the common, or warm yourself in front of the log burning fire in the cosy lounge

There is private off-road parking available and we welcome up to two well behaved dogs.

Elterwater is a very picturesque village in the heart of Langdale with some of the best walking  - we like to think this is the heart of the Lake District.  Leave the car parked up for the week, and enjoy walks from your doorstep and a fantastic local pub (The Britannia Inn), or a more formal dining treat at the Eltermere Inn Hotel.  The local village shop in Chapel Stile is less than a mile away and very well equipped for all your needs.

Wonderful week of scenery, history, and hiking.

The cottage was spotless and very comfortable, with comfortable beds and a beautiful bathroom and a comfortable, fully equipped kitchen. You can walk (15 minutes) to a local market, and many wonderful hikes start at your doorstep. The local pub is at the bottom of the street and excellent. It would have been helpful if the kind of coffee maker in the kitchen had been specified (there is a French press), as it makes it easier to shop before you arrive. Also, it would have been nice if they provided salt (they do supply you with a handful of tea bags, and some packets of instant coffee and sugar), as it's silly to have to buy an entire container of salt for just a week's stay. All the cooking knives are dangerously dull, so chopping an onion is an ordeal. They could maybe upgrade the knives, or at least provide ONE that is sharp (the sharpener didn't help at all). There was no personal interaction with the property managers, as there was no reason to, so that made it a little less friendly than it might have been. But the cottage is wonderful, the location is ideal -- no trashy shops, just the pub -- and if you want to do some walking in the glorious fells of Cumbria this is an ideal place. We plan to return ASAP!
