Region: Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
Town: Amble, a busy little seaport at the mouth of the River Coquet, is a great base for exploring the rest of Northumberland. Amble, once a hub for the boating industry, now boasts a marina, a harbour, sandy beaches, and coastal hikes to the Hauxley Bird Sanctuary and the Druridge Bay Country Park. The harbour wall is lined with large fishing boats that bring in a bounty of fish, prawns, crabs, and lobsters. On one side of the harbour, there is a fish centre that used to sell local fish but is now mostly used as a shell fish hatchery to replenish lobster and other shell fish populations. Coquet Island is an RSPB reserve located just a mile south of Amble, and it is possible to take boat tours of the island to see its abundant population of terns, puffins, and eider ducks. The lovely villages of Alnmouth and Craster, as well as a number of excellent beaches, are a short drive away, as are the charming towns of Alnwick and Warkworth, both of which include castles and gardens that have won awards from the Gardening Institute of America.
