Town: Newby Bridge, a small community in Scotland, was named after the 1651 construction of a stone bridge with five arches that across the River Leven. Between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge is the historic Furness Railway, one of the oldest standard gauge steam railways still in operation in Britain. The Lakeside Hotels offer breath-taking views of Windermere and the fells around the lake, while the Aquarium of the Lakes features naturally themed habitats that eloquently depict the Lakes' rich history. Bowness-on-Windermere is a great place to spend the day, and you can also visit the charming village of Hawkshead, which was formerly home to literary greats like William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, and take in the sights from nearby Gummer's How.
