Everything was fantastic, magical, peaceful, accommodating, amenities all included. Ladies that greeted us and gave us the tour of the property were informative and kind.
What a great place to take our extended family. Sergio and his staff were amazingly accommodating and the house itself was perfect! One day I would love to hear the history about the stage/amphitheatre! Absolutely recommend! Stella’s cafe next door was an absolute treat too!
We had a wonderful time in Monteverde and most of it was thanks to the amazing staff and house at Casa Guarumo! Amazing stay and amazing home! Thank you so much
We enjoyed this home and the Monteverde area. The home was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked. We saw lots of wildlife on the property including birds, agouti, monkeys!!!
This eclectic accommodation provided some great bird watching opportunities - more than any guided tour we joined. The resident monkeys were quite entertaining. Nice location with great coffee shops just a short walk down the driveway. W
The caretakers Maria and Jorge were terrific. Wonderful pool. Lots of places for small groups to gather. Saw monkeys in the trees at the house on our first night here!
While the monkeys seemed overwhelming at first, they were fun to watch and not a problem. We loved the layout and the spacious rooms. We could find solitude while still enjoying family gathering space. Its location provides quick access to numerous activities from the Cloud Forest , to a waterfall hike, to zip lining, to breakfast at the bottom of the driveway, to coffee options to town. There are a lot of steps!
Fantastic property. Very comfortable - every room has its own bathroom, tasteful, clean. Tons of space. Very well appointed with everything one could need. Best place we stayed in during our trip to Costa Rica. Loved the wildlife and proximity to all Monteverde activities. Had a wonderful visit from a monkey family who wanted to snack on our food.
This property is probably the most amazing property that we’ve ever stayed at. The location was absolutely perfect with an extremely short walk to get to legendary Stella’s Café, the grocery store and two other cafés and restaurants. Our host, Sergio, was very responsive and recommended this incredible Italian restaurant that was just a short 15 minute walk away. The pasta and pizza there were top shelf! The spaciousness of the property cannot be stressed enough. The grounds were immaculate and well maintained by staff who were just as friendly as you could be, and they went out of their way not to disturb us. Every day we saw Morpho butterflies, multiple species of tropical birds, daily visits from a cute agouti and the occasional visit from the monkeys. We had an impromptu concert in the amphitheater with my daughter playing guitar (furnished by the host), my son using his phone for a jazzy drumbeat, and the wife and I trying to sing! My kids also got a kick out of the roosters growing in the distance. We’re also a short walk from an amazing waterfall in a spectacular ravine with wildlife everywhere. The disco room was also pretty fun and there seems to be a bathroom every 20 feet. We are planning on coming back with friends and their families because the property just has so much room, is private and safe and it’s so well designed that everyone has their own space. Truly a gem of a propery and an experience we will not soon forget.
The house is very large so everyone could have there own room - all ensuite. Very well equipped kitchen. We really liked the location on Monteverde which allowed us to walk from the house to restaurant, shops and nature walks. We saw an Armadillo by the gate on the first evening. Highly recommended for big groups. Wish we could have stayed longer - 2 nights was not enough. Also the weather was much warmer than we expected.
Very spacious, unusual eclectic property in heart of Monteverde. Kenny made sure we had all we needed. Our family had plenty of space for privacy and the main gathering room was perfect for dinner and being together as a group. Moderate walk to town with hills but easy walk to Stellas and restaurants/shops near by. Stellas is fantastic food with wonderful presentation. Monkeys are very entertaining. Think bohemian vs. Hyatt. We really enjoyed our time!
This is a fun property that even includes your own amphitheater! As a family of 6, everyone had room to both spread out and to hang out together. The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans, so it was easy to cook our meals. ARRIVAL TIP - Do not trust GPS coordinates on Google Map as a way to arrive, that is not trustworthy in this part of the world. Instead orient yourself to Stellas restaurant. If you find yourself leaving Santa Elena and heading down to San Luis, you are going the wrong way.
The property was as described and was a nice mix of some modern renovations along with a vintage feel. We loved how it was tucked away under the large trees, and the children absolutely loved the daily monkey visits. The 10 of us mostly spent our time together in the living room area, which has a great open floor plan with high vaulted ceilings. Lush rain forest jungle view off the decks. We had everything we needed to cook meals and enjoy the property thoroughly. Robert and Catalina were very helpful and great hosts/caretakers. The property owners were quick to respond to a few of our initial questions about the area. We also loved how close it was to a small little shopping center with bakery, local restaría y, and groceries, and that you could easily walk to them, a few hundred meters away. The multiple structures made it almost like a private resort. So everyone could have their own privacy and getaway. Extremely convenient to all of the activities that Monteverde has to offer.
Our family of seven (four adults and three kids) stayed at this beautiful and unique home for two nights. There are many places to sleep, including several beds with private bathrooms and lots of uniquely designed sofas that convert into extra beds, depending on how you want to arrange yourselves. The house is surrounded by amazing wildlife. We saw beautiful birds each morning, and were visited by a small and entertaining troop of white faced capuchin monkeys one morning. The location is outside the hustle and bustle of Monteverde, but just a few minutes walk from Stella's (a favorite for healthy and delicious breakfasts and lunches) and a few other stores and restaurants. Sergio was very responsive to any questions that came up, both before and during our stay. Thanks for a great stay!
We stayed in June for 4 nights, it was a large family gathering. The house and garden are a conglomerate of multiple rooms on the side of a hill that are not connected to each other but you can access from outside. Each room has its own balcony view and charm. The garden had lots of flora and intricate pathways, zig zagging to the rooms. When it rains it can be wet and slippery; it was the rainy season.
The main living room and kitchen is well equipped with pots, pans, kettle, coffee maker, microwave, large toaster. We spent most of our time here and enjoyed playing card games on the large table.
Plenty of sleeping options, lots of warm blankets, large safe to keep documents and laptops (ipads).
The best part of the house was early morning and evening bird watching from kitchen balcony; lots of humming birds, emerald toucanets, motmots, trogans, finches...
in addition to birds there were some larger animals that visited as well; squirrels, peahens, coatis, armadillos, agoutis.. In the night you can hear them jumping on the roofs.
You literally feel like you’re staying in the forest - the property is beautiful and expansive, the rooms are spread out a bit and there’s quite a few stairs involved. I had my old parents (75 yrs+) who could walk up and down the stairs - we kept that to once a day though so they didn’t have to make multiple trips up and down. Our teenage boys took the rooms that were detached from the main unit while our parents and us stayed in adjacent rooms which are part of the main unit. Taking the luggage up & down for Checkin and checkout was certainly a bit of a haul - so, you need to be ready for that if you’re carrying a few check in bags. Our teenage boys got some workout with me:-)
The location is very nice - we didn’t get to see the moneys as they never showed up. Stella’s bakery next door is great for breakfast & brunches.
The host even arranged tour guide for night walk etc and provided tips for booking zipline etc. Selvatura park was a great family experience for Zipline as well as sloth habitat, butterfly garden, etc.
Overall, a memorable cloud forest expedition staying at this property.
Casa Guarumo is a magical place! We were a group of 9 (4 adults, 5 children ages 14, 13, 11, 9, and 7) traveling through Monteverde for two nights. Communication with Sergio was great and despite us not following the directions (we were supposed to text 24 hours in advance of our arrival), they were able to accommodate an early check-in! The property is simply magical - there is a main house with one queen bed, and several other bedrooms scattered throughout the property. This might be an issue for some groups/families who have smaller children, but for us it worked well. Each bedroom had a twin trundle/couch in addition to a main bed (varied between queen and king beds) and a separate bathroom. One villa had a rooftop terrace! The amphitheater provided a cool vibe (it also had a separate men and womens toilet area). We felt this property would be a very cool event space! Please note - there is no A/C in this property, but we opened doors and windows to get air circulating. We were not uncomfortable at all - the climate in Monteverde is perfect for indoor/outdoor living. Our most favorite parts about the property are the lush vegetation throughout - you truly feel like you are in a jungle - and the MONKEYS! Each afternoon, the monkeys would come and visit around 4:30pm! This provided our group for lasting memories and was such a fun experience. Overall, this was a fantastic place for our group and will cherish the memories we had while staying here!

Thanks Helen for such a wonderful review.
You are always welcome to visit us again.
Very interesting, unusual, and beautiful place. The bedrooms were spread over several buildings, but that was fine, and even nice, except for the fact that it rained virtually the entire time we were there and so the people in the other buildings got wet every time they came and went to the main building. But this is to be expected in the tropics. There were 3 issues that we found frustrating. (1) When we arrived, every room had incense burning and because there were no screens on the windows and the doors were shut the smell was completely overpowering and gross. Seven of the 8 of us really dislike the smell of incense and so we had to open all the doors and windows and use the fans to try and air out the smell, but it still lingered until the next day. Assuming that guests like the smell of incense is an odd choice; wouldn't it be better to have the incense available but unlit so that the arriving guests can decide if they want it burning in every room? (2) There were at least 4 wifi networks because things are so spread out, but we were not able to get the wifi to work in 2 of the 4 bedrooms. (3) This is not the owner's fault, but the next door neighbor had a rooster that starting crowing at about 3:00 in the morning. Aside from hiring a rooster assassin I don't know what can be done about this, but roosters are the worst.

Thank you so much for your review, which is very helpful in identifying areas for improvement and avoiding misinterpretations by others.
As you mentioned, our property is divided into separate and independent accommodations to ensure each guest's privacy.
Each space has its own independent entrance and private bathroom, and they are connected by corridors that we have chosen not to encroach upon with structures or roofs in order to respect the landscaping and the surrounding nature.
There are always umbrellas in the house for use in case of rain.
One of the unique characteristics of the cloud forest, and one of its main attractions, is its very high humidity, which makes it so lush year-round. However, some people are bothered by the musty smell, and for this reason, we usually use less invasive scents than disinfectants, such as incense. This is the first time in 15 years that a guest has spoken so disparagingly about incense, and it shows us that there are always exceptions to the rule.
I agree with you about the rooster.
I much prefer the song of a goldfinch, a quetzal, or a bellbird. However, it's also a bird.
I hope the rest of your experience was satisfactory. We cannot guarantee a perfect scenario in a world that isn't. After your stay with us, we had to discard white shower towels that you used to clean the mud off your shoes, and we also had to replace the glass on one of the tables, which you accidentally broke.
It's also part of our experience as hosts.
Family-friendly and well maintained. We saw more wildlife during our two nights here than our entire trip. Monkeys were on the awning, roof and patio. Great location in the woods but within walking distance to town for those who like to walk. Julieth and Robert were very responsive to provide assistance. Great value for anyone looking for lodging for a larger group.
