About this property

Charming gothic house with a lovely terrace and garden

Guests will immediately appreciate the charm of this gothic former school house. Recently renovated and updated using historic materials and craftsmen, the house remains true to its original character whilst quietly embracing all modern comforts.

Sustainably refurbished, Trillow House is furnished with a mix of antique and contemporary furniture, complemented by a host of original artworks. With gracious living rooms it's cosy in winter and in summer guests will enjoy the beauty of the well-maintained garden with floral displays throughout the season. Breakfast on the terrace in the morning sunshine; the tinkling of the courtyard fountain and the gas barbeque beneath the bows of an elegant weeping ash. From the garden one can fully take in the architectural character of the building, and the stone mullioned gothic windows of the former village school.

The Clun valley is known for its beautiful countryside, charming villages and series of castles and fortified manor houses. Hopton Castle is on the outskirts of the village; the romantic ruins of Clun Castle lie further up the valley. Ludlow Castle and Wigmore Castle are within striking distance. The iconic 13th Century Stokesay Castle is just a short drive away. Further afield (around 45 minutes drive) is the magnificent Powys Castle, a stronghold for the Welsh princes with beautiful terraced gardens is home to the Clive of India Collection.

For the active, there are the mountain bicycling trails at Hopton Woods and numerous local walks through stunning and varied scenery. You will have use of a dedicated locked bicycle shed.

Just 8 miles away is foodie heaven; Ludlow is described by Country Life as “the most vibrant small town in the Country” and by Sir John Betjeman as “probably the loveliest town in England with its hill of Georgian houses ascending from the river Teme to the great tower of the cross-shaped church.”
Its 500 listed buildings are mainly Georgian or half-timbered, set within the original 13th century town walls. It is a pleasure to amble through the streets and check out all the speciality food and antique and curio shops.

Clunton and Clunbury,
Clungunford and Clun,
Are the quietest places
Under the sun.

In valleys of springs of rivers,
By Ony and Teme and Clun,
The country for easy livers,
The quietest under the sun.

The old village school has been a labour of love for the family for over 50 years. We have restored the fabric of the building and tended the beautiful gardens which give the house its very special atmosphere

Why they chose this property

We love the victorian gothic architecture of the former village school and its position amidst the stunning Shropshire hills

What makes this property unique

Trillow House, the teacher's house of the village school, has been restored to a high standard of modern comfort using sustainable and historic materials. Underfloor heating will keep you cosy in winter and in summer the house is cool and airy. The delightful garden is an inviting place to while away the afternoon reading a book or having a barbeque. Breakfast at the outside table in the morning sunshine is a special pleasure.
