Town: Nestling in the Annandale valley, Moffat developed in the 17th century from a village to a spa town where the sulphurous waters of the Moffat Well were held to have the power to heal and this led to an influx of visitors throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the buildings in the town date from this period and the present Town Hall was originally developed as a Bath House. The original well can still be visited and is a 1.5 mile walk from the town into the surrounding countryside. In addition to its renown as a spa town, Moffat also grew in stature due to the wool trade and also its position as a stopping point on journeys between England and Scotland. Today the town is popular with tourists and not just because of the superb scenery affording many opportunities for great walking, cycling and fishing. Situated 50 miles from Glasgow and Edinburgh, Moffat is the ideal base for travelling to events in the cities. It has a range of attractions including the Moffat Museum, theatres, art galleries and a selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Treat yourself to some famous Moffat Toffee and don’t miss the annual Moffat Gala in July and not forgetting the renowned Moffat Sheep Races in August!
