We feel duped and defrauded
we paid to have a room in a historic monastery with a view of Loch Ness and we were put in a stucco out building with a view of a car park.

I'm sorry that, due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to move your reservation from the apartment you had booked to a different one.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of operating within a historic building, we occasionally face unforeseen and unavoidable maintenance issues such as lack of heating or hot water, or boiler breakdowns, or unexpected building and weather related issues. In this instance, a sudden problem affecting essential services within the reserved apartment meant that the apartment that you had reserved was no longer safe or suitable for occupation at the time of your arrival. These types of issues can arise without warning in buildings of this age and complexity, and while we do everything possible to prevent them, they are not always predictable or immediately resolvable.
As a result, on your first night, we relocated you to the only available accommodation at the time, one of our Courtyard Cottages, which on one side of the living room offers views over the lawn down to the River Tarff, as well as convenient parking for a car on the other side. We appreciate that this differed from the accommodation you had originally booked, but was of no less monetary value.
For the following two nights of your stay, we were able to make available and offer you an upgrade to one of our premier penthouse apartments (at no additional expense to yourself), which featured some of the architectural elements that drew you to choose The Highland Club in the first instance, such as stained glass windows, stone arches, as well as a private rooftop terrace with an enclosed dome for star gazing as well as wonderful views over Loch Ness and the surrounding hillsides. This option was offered to you by our on-site team each subsequent day of your stay; however, you declined the move each time, including the offer of assistance with relocating any/all or part of your luggage.
Thank you for your subsequent correspondence where you agreed that a maintenance issue in a historic building was understandable. We're sorry that, as you said, you were already so tired and frustrated, that despite our best efforts, there seemed to be nothing our team members could say or do to remedy the situation to your satisfaction.

A truly wonderful stay in incredible surrounds
Such a spectacular spot on the banks of Loch Ness, with simply beautiful surrounds. The Highland Club offers a perfect base to explore the area, with a wonderful rich history and architectural style to the building - a truly special place with an incredible atmosphere, evocative of the centuries-old history attached.

Amazing stay in a gorgeous location
The cottage was beautiful and had everything I needed, it was dog friendly and unlike other places I stayed that said this it actually was, my dog was welcomed with treats and a lovely bed and bowls, extra throws were left so your dog could use all the facilities and there were dog towels for cleaning after walks. The cottage was just a few steps from the edge of Loch Ness and beautiful walks into the town. The main building was stunning and all the facilities meant you could stay for weeks

We had a wonderful weekend in the Cottage!
The cottage was spacious and comfortable, in a beautiful location, and with all the amenities we needed for a getaway in the highlands. The cottage has a lovely cosy but modern feel, with very comfy beds, a great shower and a big kitchen and tv. The grounds at the highland club are beautiful and right on their edge of Loch Ness. Can’t wait to come back here again!

So relaxing, I feel like a whole new person!
Staying at the Highland Club was wonderful, with my two dogs and my daughter, we relaxed and had little adventures. The place was so clean and had everything anyone could want to fend for themselves. The beds were so comfortable at the end of our stay I went online to find the same brand of pillows to buy for my self! The situation right on the water was perfect and my daughter loved the pool , I wish we could have stayed longer!

The most wonderful place to stay
A breathtaking building in a breathtaking location. The Riverside Cottages are perfect for families surrounded by wild rabbits and ducks. You are right on the loch so can enjoy it from dusk until dawn. Staff are very welcoming and The Highland Club add little personal touches to make you feel at home. Close to Fort William, Urquhart Castle, the loch cruise dock and Great Glen Ways Trail. We will be returning!

It was wonderful to stay in such a beautiful place with stunning views and friendly staff
The cottage we stayed in was smart, well stocked with lots of little extras and very comfortable. The staff at The Highland Club were very friendly and knowledgeable including giving us advice on places to visit. The location at the head of Loch Ness is fabulous. Early morning walks along the loch side with my two dogs were an absolute delight. Fort Augustus is a very good base for exploring the Highlands but there are also fantastic walks and views in and around Fort Augustus.

A truly iconic area to stay in, the venue is fantastic steeped In history with a modern flare
Every part of our stay was tailored to us. From arriving and seeing the fridge stocked with essentials, cupboards with cleaning items, sauces and condiments and a healthy supply of coffee! As well as having all of your at home amenities, TV, WiFi, ironing boards, board games, drying racks, sports equipment and umbrellas for occasional incremental weather. The pool and gym area are a fantastic addition but the grounds of the Abbey make the full stay. The staff are all incredible and attentive.

About the host
Hosted by Host
In 2003 The Santon Group, a respected developer of listed buildings, purchased the dilapidated Grade A listed buildings and grounds of St Benedict's Abbey. A 30 GBP million conversion of the site into The Highland Club was embarked upon and finally completed in 2012.
The Santon Group is dedicated to preserving the special character and many beautiful features of the Abbey, its cloisters and the great towers that make it such a landmark. However, inside a programme of total renovation and discreet building has transformed the original spartan accommodation into 97 distinctive one, two and three bedroom apartments. In addition, there are 12 charming cottages in the grounds.
Today the austerity of monastic life has given way to the warmth of modern leisure living.
The Highland Club is managed by a team of helpful on site staff who are overseen by the ever friendly Highland Club Manager, Mark Dallas.
