Givendale Cottages are family-run, luxury country holiday cottages in the heart of North Yorkshire. Tom, Shanie, their four daughters, Polly, Tessa, Jemima and Tilly and their friendly spaniel, Billy, have lived at Great Givendale, an 18th-century farmhouse on the Newby Hall Estate, for over 12 years.

While guests are left in privacy to enjoy a tranquil, home-from-home stay, the whole family plays a part in delivering an unforgettable Yorkshire experience. Guests can also purchase a range of seasonal home produce from the Orchard Box, run by the Givendale Girls. This includes freshly laid eggs from our Light Sussex hens, homemade jam and homemade apple juice. The girls will also be helping Shanie develop the cut-flower patch, so guests can order bunches of flowers during the summer months.

A true labour of love, Shanie has poured her passion for interiors, art, gardens and hosting into every detail. Now training in garden design, she plans to bring her learning into the cottage gardens, with exciting plans for both the cottages and grounds in the months ahead.

Why they chose this property

We are so very lucky to be positioned in such a beautiful spot on the Newby Hall estate with unspoilt, 360 degree views as far as the eye can see encompassing the Yorkshire Dales, the River Ure, Ripon cathedral, a water-filled medieval moat, farmland woodland and parkland and an abundance of wildlife. It is hard to believe when you are here that the cathedral city of Ripon is only 5 minutes away. We are also fortunate enough to be just 25 minutes from the spa town of Harrogate and just over 30 minutes away from the historic city of York and nearby to so many of Yorkshire's most loved attractions. We never take for granted the wonderful variety of walks we can enjoy from the doorstep with the river and sailing lake just a field away and Newby Hall's award winning house and gardens just a 20 minute walk or short cycle along the estate's coach road. We are also extremely lucky to have 2 good pubs within walking distance, but I must name the Black Lion in Skelton-on-Ure which has just re-opened its doors and really is an exceptional and very popular country pub with excellent food and superb atmosphere. Seeing so many returning guests we can see that others agree that Givendale is a very unique and special place.

What makes this property unique

The cottages, once workers’ cottages for Newby Hall, were renovated and refurbished in 2025. Historically, Givendale was an important farming community managed and established by the Weddell family, who owned Newby Hall in 1748. The cottages overlook the site of a medieval moated manor house, believed to have been home to the Nubie family, who owned the surrounding land, including Newby Hall’s park, in the 13th century. The setting is unarguably unique and we are building on that to create an unforgettable holiday experience for guests. We have put much thought into creating cosy, country cottage luxury interiors, we offer a generous welcome pack as well as the opportunity to buy fresh home / farm produce from the orchard box, we have a well stocked bike shed for guests to enjoy cycling around the estate, The cottages have fully furnished outdoor dining bbq terraces which enjoy breathtaking views. Guest also have the use of the walled garden with a view point and paddock for exercising dogs or children! We have exciting plans for the cottages and gardens moving forward.
