About this property

Artist's Studio - Piddlehinton, Dorchester

Purchased by the current owners' family during the First World War, the main house of West Lodge is now a retreat for writers in exile. Built as a later Victorian extension of the original Georgian farmhouse from 1789, the unique Artist's Studio at West Lodge invites you to stay in Piddlehinton in the picturesque Piddle Valley, in what is the original studio of Victorian artist John Baverstock Knight, whose grand-scale ceiling painting is a central feature of the light-filled and domed living space. Other examples of his work can be found in the bedrooms of this spacious former studio, added circa 1830. The generous accommodation has been restored over the last two years, with sustainability in mind with high levels of insulation, solar panels and an air source heat pump.

On arrival you enter the all first-floor accommodation via an external staircase and arrive in the front hallway. Two steps down take you to the stunning day space with its high ceiling, which consists of an attractive and well-equipped kitchen and large dining area, a comfortable seating area with feature marble fireplace and open fire and some unique artwork, furniture and fittings which have been carefully sourced. The utility room is conveniently located next to the kitchen.

Stepping up to the hallway, you will find the three comfortable bedrooms, each with more original features including wooden window shutters. Bedroom one is a king-size bedroom with an en-suite shower room and bedrooms two and three offer twin single beds which can be zipped together to provide an additional king-size and super-king-size upon request. The family bathroom has a bath with rainfall and handheld shower. A large hall cupboard provides coat hanging and shelf storage and has a freezer within also.

Artist's Studio is a wonderful holiday home for up to six guests and an ideal base for exploring the quaint villages along and around the Piddle Valley and the county town of Dorchester is just a short drive away with its plethora of museums, attractions and shops. In addition to being convenient for cyclists, the location is ideal for trips out to the nearby Jurassic Coast, or for exploring the rural landscape of central Dorset. The nearby Thimble Inn pub is just a few steps away from your holiday retreat.

With its artist heritage, guests wanting to paint during a stay will find an easel and clean-up facilities for brushes and palettes in the utility room, and floor covering can be provided upon request. So whether you are looking for a restful painting break, a great base for exploring the coast and countryside, or a cosy and comfortable home from home to enjoy time together, the Artist's Studio is perfect for all.
