Nineteenth-century house with adjoining historic garden on the Stagnone of Marsala
A villa with a large garden right on the shore of the Stagnone, furnished just as it was a century ago, equipped with every modern comfort while preserving its historic atmosphere. Century-old fig trees line the entrance avenue, a private pine grove, and, at the rear, a large historic garden created—like the grand villa itself—in the first half of the 19th century, A long colonnade flanked by orange, lemon, mandarin, banana, and olive trees, and at the far end, tall palm trees and an elegant “cafeaus.” “Cafeaus”—as our ancestors called the coffee house—was modelled on the gardens of wealthy English families who had moved to Sicily during those years to produce Marsala wine. And, almost hidden away, an old irrigation basin converted into a small swimming pool—an oasis of peace and well-being. Beyond the gate, a long bike path leading to the Ettore Infersa salt flats. On the horizon lie the islands of Favignana, Marettimo, and Levanzo; and, closer by, the Stagnone islands, among which is the jewel of Mothia, with its Punic ruins and museum. In the morning, the spectacle of the “albaria”—as the locals call the flat sea stretching to the horizon—and in the evening, unforgettable sunsets.
