About this property

Authentic Appalachian Mountain Farmhouse

Welcome to an unforgettable stay at our extraordinary farm retreat! Need anything during your visit? Don't hesitate to reach out to 828-734-0411. We do not take calls after 8pm and will answer the next day.

Excited to explore? You're in for a treat! But first, a few important notes: Sorry, no pets allowed on the farm. We cherish our furry friends, but with all the wildlife around, it's best to keep them safe and sound. And let's keep the indoors fresh—no smoking inside, please! Feel free to enjoy your smoke responsibly on the porch, where ash trays await in the 'mud room' for your convenience. We do not accept reservations with checkin or checkout days on Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter.

Ready to dive into the experience? Our historic farm, nestled in the heart of Haywood County, has a story as rich as its surroundings. From Scottish roots to American independence, the Boyd family's legacy spans centuries, and you're invited to be a part of it.

Expect the unexpected—our farm is alive with creatures big and small, from horses and cows to possums, raccoons, and more! Plus, catch glimpses of deer, bear, and even elk from Cataloochee Valley. It's a wild wonderland out here, where nature thrives and history whispers in every breeze.

Step inside our farmhouse, where every corner tells a tale. Antique treasures, collected from around the globe by Lt. Colonel Katie Boyd herself, adorn the space, alongside logs that have weathered over two centuries. It's a blend of Appalachian history and modern comfort—a true gem waiting to be discovered.

And the fun doesn't stop indoors! Relax on our expansive porch, play games with loved ones, or gather 'round the fire pit under the starlit sky. It's all about making memories that last a lifetime, surrounded by family, friends, and the warmth of tradition.

Ready for adventure? Explore the nearby wonders, from Maggie Valley to the Great Smoky Mountains Park. And when night falls, don't miss the magic of lightning bugs lighting up the summer sky—it's a sight to behold!

At our farm, you're not just a guest, you're family. Soak in the history, embrace the tranquility, and make yourself at home. Whether you're hiking the fields or simply sharing a smile with a neighbor, you're part of our 200-year-old legacy.

Join us for a stay like no other—a blend of past and present, comfort and adventure, all wrapped up in the embrace of our beloved farm. Book now and let the magic begin!

We can no longer put trash outside in trash bins because of the bears. Please put in laundry room and take to the dump when you have load located five minutes away on highway 276 directly across the road from the stop sign. Sunday the dump is closed. OK to leave in laundry room if checking out.

One of our favorite places

This is the third time we’ve stayed here, and we absolutely love it. They have thought of everything. There is nothing you’ll need that you won’t find here. There were also some updates since our last stay that made it even better. The setting is quiet and peaceful, yet it’s not far from restaurants and stores. The porch and firepit are perfect. Communication is always quick and easy. Highly recommend. We will definitely stay here again.

Outstanding

The front yard is simply amazing with nothing but room to run. The fire flies put on quite a show. The turkeys and bunnies were a bonus to watch from this massive wrap around porch. Definitely recommending.

We had a great time at this beautiful farm house.

Overall we had a lovely stay. The house was well stocked and the property was gorgeous and fit our family well. The only reason I gave 4 stars overall instead of 5 was because the listing said it had a hot tub and our group was very excited to relax in the hot tub. The property has a jaccuzi tub inside but the stopper didnt work so we weren't able to use it and that's not what our family was expecting. I should have asked the property owner at booking just to make sure but when a listing says hot tub I took it at its word. Overall we had a great time and loved our trip, I would just omit hot tub in the listing because it is misleading, and fix the drain in the tub. Not having a tub to bathe small children was a bit tricky. We wouod definitely recommend this property to others.

Cozy cabin in private cove

Our quilting group stayed in this cabin for the second time because we adore it! It’s in a lush green private cove with beautiful views from the deck. They’ve upgraded some furniture and bedding since last year so it’s even nicer. We are older ladies and some of us cannot negotiate the steep stairs but we found ways to accommodate everyone. We fully expect to stay there again. ( The only caveat is for those who can’t deal with the occasional smell of distant cows). We didn’t have any moose wander over the mountain, which we had been hoping for, but we did get some snowflakes so we counted our visit perfect.

History & vacation

We’re interested in history especially when we travel. We have stayed in this area multiple times. Appalachian Farmhouse was rich with history. The property and the family are both interesting. Thanks for sharing so much detail with us. The house is very clean and comfortable. Everything was as described.

Overall property was great. It was small things that caused only 4*. Dirty dishes, light fixture without cover, dead bugs and cobwebs. Area is beautiful and quiet for peaceful stay. Livingroom could use some comfortable furniture.

Stunningly Beautiful Setting

Our ladies sewing group has been having one or two retreats a year for nearly twenty years. This place is now our favorite. We live in the beautiful mountains of NC but this place was tucked back in an area of gorgeous grassy green rolling hills with a wide front porch to overlook it all. The house itself is not upscale but built around an old log cabin with a very serviceable kitchen. It is billed as a working farm but we only saw cows on the drive in although we could occasionally smell them from the porch. There’s a wooded area behind the house and a small spring at the bottom of the property. I will note that the stairs to the two upstairs bedrooms are very steep but the ladies with old knees managed with the very sturdy handrail. We hope to return and I may even take my husband for a private getaway or meet some grandkids there.

Great outdoor space

Came to town to snowboard/ski for the holiday weekend, and the farm was convenient enough to Cataloochee (~30 minutes). Our kids complained about random bugs crawling on them when they slept, but it's an old Farmhouse, so that's to be expected. The pictures and dolls all creeped them out, but once they hid the dolls in some trunks that were in the room, and got ignored the pictures, they were fine :) If we knew there were several electrical outlets on the home's exterior, we'd probably have driven our electric car (which might be a good thing to point out in the listing). The property and outdoor space made for a great place to stay near the slopes.

Beautiful Rural Cabin in a Wonderful Location

My family and I greatly enjoyed the cabin and property for an end of summer getaway. There was a slight error in check-in (my fault), but Kirk was understanding and accommodating. The cabin history, decor, and layout was fantastic. The property and farm atmosphere were fun and entertaining for our 4 year-olds as well as the adults. The location was fantastic, away from society, but close enough to run to town and enjoy the wonderful restaurants in Waynesville and Maggie Valley. The location allows for quick trips to hiking trails, Asheville, Cherokee, and Cataloochee Valley. During our stay, we saw the crashed airplane at Waterrock Knob, several black bears and elk in Cataloochee Valley, Soco Falls, and other excursions. The cabin was the perfect basecamp. The cabin description does not address the lack of AC upstairs. I saw this mentioned in a review upon further research after our arrival. The temps were in the low 80s and it was a little warmer upstairs than I prefer. However, downstairs was nice and cool. This was easily remedied by switching to downstairs for the cooler sleepers and upstairs for the warmer sleepers. Overall, it was a minor inconvenience and we wouldn't hesitate to rent this cabin again.

Wonderful House

This property was perfect for our family of 7 on an extended stay. The location is quiet, in the country, yet minutes from town. The front porch is amazing— we spent most of our time there. The place is clean and well stocked. We will be staying there again when we return to Western Carolina.

Peaceful Retreat

The setting is rolling green hills on the farm but only 5 miles from town so great location. The house is as advertised - full of antiques but modern kitchen and bathrooms. There is air conditioning on the main floor with the master bedroom but all other bedrooms are upstairs with no AC. It was cool during our stay so it worked out, but would not go during mid-summer as a personal preference. The owner was very responsive and we enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful Cabin on a Quiet Family Farm

We had a wonderful time staying at this beautiful (and exceptionally clean!!!) cabin. The views of rolling green hills and the surrounding mountains were gorgeous. We had so much fun sitting around the awesome fire pit roasting hot dogs and marshmallows! Being retired from the Air Force myself, I found the history of the cabin very fascinating and we all enjoyed the family pictures on the wall which allowed us to see the original owner of the cabin ( a female military officer! I wanted to salute her as I am a retired female Master Sergeant 😊 Wish I could have met her! I know she would have had a lot of awesome and interesting stories to tell !) The cabin was equipped with everything you could possibly need. We had a wonderful, relaxing time and we loved the farm setting and watching the cows roaming about as we rocked on the front porch. The cabin is only a short drive to Maggie Valley which is a plus! And it is very easy to get to! If you're looking for a quiet getaway to relax and unwind, this cabin is perfect!!!

Good stay

The farmhouse was a nice and unique place to spend a few days away from home. Well equipped with everything you need for a nice vacation. The only thing I could suggest is maybe a queen bed upstairs instead of a double. Otherwise everything else was very nice. Clean, quiet and a beautiful area. We missed the fall colors by about a week but you can't change the weather. Thanks. Jim and the rest of the group.

Laid back Serenity

The farmhouse is the perfect place to kick back and unwind! We came to escape the heat of Eastern North Carolina Durango August. Our first night, we saw eight elk grazing in the field near the house. Almost each night that we were there we saw deer, eating apples underneath the tree near the end of the porch. We saw it go with twin fawns as well! The house is quite comfortable and functional. My only comment would be that the mattresses might need to be replaced and a better sitting sofa.

Country Stay at its BEST!!!

The description of this unique farm house is spot on. It's not a country club/ resort stay, it's quiet countryside peacefulness on a farmland with beautiful mountain scenery. My grandkids (two boys, 8 &6 , and girl, 22 months old) absolutely LOVED everything about the place and surroundings. We walked down to see the cows almost every night, caught fire flies that were like twinkling lights and even went to the dairy farm and saw the cows being milked, Even though we were out in the countryside, stores and adventures were close by. My only suggestion would be to let people know that you have to haul the trash off (which fortunately isn't too far) and even though the beds fit the decor of the home, the bed (which I think is only a double) in the master was so small for my husband and I and we aren't large people. The couch isn't very comfortable and there could be some better seating in the living area, but we did spend the majority of our time out on the wrap around porch which was AWESOME!! The only maintence issue was that the walk-in shower had mold (which I cleaned myself), but the shower hand held nozzle was broke and there was water leaking from the bottom onto the floor so it was of no use to us during our stay which was a little hard on my husband who has a leg injury, but we made due. All in all, we had the most WONDERFUL time making cherished memories with our family!!!! It really is country living at its BEST!!!
