Welcome to Elk Point, hosted by Carolina Mountain Vacation Homes! Privacy, privacy, privacy! Elk Point is a hiker’s paradise. High in the Smoky Mountains above Maggie Valley, NC, this fabulous authentic log home is just under a mile from the Cataloochee Valley National Park. The vacation rental is named for the area in the national park where elk have been reintroduced into North Carolina. The herd is thriving and can be seen in the afternoons in the park, grazing the fields that once sustained the original inhabitants of the area. Elk Point adjoins the Cataloochee trail and is the perfect base station for hiking in the park.

Elk Point is a spacious log home on 10 private acres. It features three large bedrooms - one upstairs with a King bed (Sleep Number) and 2 on the main level with a queen-sized bed in each. A sleeping loft with another queen bed and two twin/trundle beds overlook the stone fireplace in the great room. Take in beautiful views of the surrounding Smoky Mountains.

10 minutes to Cataloochee Park. 20 minutes to Maggie Valley. 25 minutes to Waynesville, NC. 35 minutes to Harrah’s Casino, Cherokee gambling. 45 minutes to Asheville, NC, home of the Biltmore House. Day trips include Nantahala and Ocoee white water rafting; Grandfather Mountain; Lake Lure; Hot Springs; Biltmore House, and much more.

Beautiful view

I booked this property to attend a family reunion in Maggie Valley. If you are looking for seclusion, this is it. The front porch views are amazing. Little to no cell service and no Wi-Fi, so you can definitely turn the outside world off. Lots of dvd’s and vhs movies provided. Hot tub is small, but nice. Kitchen has plenty of dishes and flatware. The log home has a beautiful wood burning stone fireplace. Other things to know… the drive up the mountain is steep and winding, as is the driveway(mostly paved). Parking is limited. The climb from car to house is a full cardio workout and we found it to be slippery following rain. I can’t imagine seniors or those with mobility issues safely making it to house. I would also be very concerned with small children on this property. Arrival night, my son discovered his bed (loft queen) had dirty sheets. We made do with sheets from trundle bed not in use. All of my group(adults) commented on the lack of lighting both inside and out. The grill/hot tub/fire pit area was nice, but had zero lighting that we could find. Both front and back porches(the length of house) had one small light at each door. Same issue inside. It’s almost as if lighting was an afterthought. So dark! We were also very disappointed in the bed and bath linens. Please invest in new! The towels and washcloths are worn out and many are stained. We had trouble with the washing machine and notified property manager. Response was quick, relaying instructions from cleaner.

Amazing view

Had a nice time in the cabin. The walk way up to the cabin is pretty tough especially unloading and toting everything up and back down. Besides that we had a great time and the best view in any cabin we have ever rented!

Mountain stay

Really enjoyed the property. The driveway is a bit unnerving as there are multiple switchbacks and it is very steep. The cabin is wonderful. Very clean. The kitchen was very well stocked. But beware there isn’t much sound insulation- we could hear my Mom cough from our upstairs bedroom when she was in her bed directly below us. She said she could hear us talking as well. The views are wonderful. Most mornings we were above the clouds. One word of caution- the area between where you park and the cabin entrance is steep and not easy to navigate for my 70yo mother. It rained a lot and this walkway of stones was very slippery for most of our stay. It took two of us to help her navigate up and down. A handrail would be a great safety addition.

The grill could use a cleaning. The upstairs stays warm. It is hard to make the whole place the same temp. Very loud but its a cabin!! Lots of positives but you know them!
