About the Cottage

More than just a stay, this is an experience. A historic 1920s limestone home set on land with deep local roots, offering a peaceful escape with a story to tell. Perfect for slowing down and enjoying something truly different.

The Cottage has been shaped by time, craftsmanship, and the people who have cared for it over generations.

Built in the 1920s, the main stone house was constructed from hand-cut limestone and locally sourced cedar beams. Its structure is unlike most homes today, with solid stone walls supporting the entire weight of the house. That enduring design is part of what gives the home its quiet strength and lasting presence.

By the mid-20th century, the home had already taken on much of its current form. The upstairs addition, along with the enclosed porches that now serve as the butler’s pantry and sunroom, were thoughtfully integrated by skilled local hands, preserving the character while adapting the space for modern living.

Inside, you’ll find details that carry their own stories, like the owl chandelier in the salon, brought from Germany by Ernest and Iva Rue Montgomery, antique dealers in Austin in the 1970s and 80s. It remains a distinctive part of the home today.

The land itself reaches even further back in history. Once part of the Antioch Colony, a post–Civil War Freedmen’s community, it holds a deeper connection to the area’s past. Near the creek, a limestone fountain carved by a man named Cole once served as a vital water source for nearby families. Over time, the road leading here became known as Cole Springs Road in his honor, a name that still ties the property to its origins.

At the base of the hill sits the small yellow cottage, originally used as servant quarters, complete with its historic outhouse, a quiet reminder of another era.

We’ve done our best to preserve the spirit of this place while creating a comfortable, welcoming experience so guests can enjoy not just the home, but the story it carries.

Charming house and setting

Beautiful home with all the amenities you could possibly need. Watching the sunsets from the tower in back was mesmerizing. The location allows you to visit other hill country towns. Definitely a wonderful place to take the whole family.

I wanted to express how much our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cole Springs Historic Buda Cottage. The home exudes charm and was incredibly well-stocked for our party of eight adults. We were delighted by the beautiful property, especially the magnificent oak trees that added to the overall ambiance. If we find ourselves in the area again, we will definitely rent this house. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

We traveled from out of town to visit family and the Buda cottage was the perfect place for our family gatherings. The cottage inside is so charming and the large living and dining room area was perfect for dining and visiting. The stone walls, antique chandeliers and furniture and arched doorways made us feel like we were inside an ancient castle. The kitchen was fully equipped to meet our needs. The beds were comfortable and the linens were so soft. It was a treat to take a bath in the upstairs clawfoot tub. Oh, and the upstairs chess table and pool table kept us entertained. Lastly, the home was very clean and well taken care of. It is only a 5 minute drive to downtown Buda, with nice restaurants, specialty shops, and a wine bar! 5 stars all around for this very unique and special home and property and 5 stars for the hosts! We will definitely be back!

We had an amazing and relaxing stay. The house is nicely furnished and feels super cozy. The house had welcoming Easter decorations, including wash clothes folded like little bunnies. I loved how well the house was stocked - tons of extra towels, bathmats, sheets, etc. It's pet-friendly, but we didn't find any fur or signs of other pets and all of the rugs were clean. The beds and pillows were all super comfortable. My kids loved the pool table upstairs and I loved sitting in that same room full of natural light and reading (windows on both sides). The house is endearingly quirky - it feels like it was built before electricity and then retro-fitted, so switches are not where you'd necessarily expect (don't worry, it also has central air). The property is fun to explore and centers around a huge, beautiful tree, with a field for kicking around a soccer ball and amazing views from the wood deck of the tower. Buda is a cute town with little shops and restaurants, and there's a much more commercial area (with an HEB, Target, and Walmart) nearby. Gina and Ben are wonderfully responsive from before to after our stay.

5/5 it really was an amazing visit! Across the board a superior experience. The place itself is better than described and the pictures don’t do it justice. The cottage was spotless clean. All the necessary amenities were there. And more just stuff as icing. The interior design is very intentional. A mix of rustic and modern that made the place exceedingly livable. Beds were very comfortable and my wife said that she had the most restful sleep her health feedback ring has ever recorded! There were even farm fresh eggs waiting for us in the fridge. Excellent communication before and during. The location felt remote but you were very close to excellent dining and entertainment. I can’t recommend this site highly enough and we are already thinking about returning.

Hi there! I'm originally from Arlington, Texas, but I've called Buda home since 2014, where I live with my husband and our four kids. I'm the owner of this beautiful, historic property and co-manage it with my eldest son, Ben. My own home is just 11 minutes away, so I'm always close by. We love being hosts because it allows us to share a piece of Buda's charm and history, and we truly enjoy seeing guests make wonderful memories here!

Why they chose this property

You'll find our home beautifully tucked away up a long driveway, nestled under majestic oaks on 14.6 acres. It's a peaceful retreat where you'll often see nearby longhorns and sometimes sheep grazing.

What I love most about this property is its ancient charm and unique history, originally a German family estate. My family and I jumped at the chance to own it when a friend, who was renting here, told us it was for sale. We're excited to restore and renovate the other structures on-site and improve the pond – our son, Ozzie, a true fishing geek, already populated it with catfish and bass last summer! It's a special place to connect with nature and history.

What makes this property unique

Unique Features & Unforgettable Views
Our absolute showstopper is the three-level lookout tower. On the first level, kids (and kids at heart!) will adore "The Cave," our charming playroom. But the real magic happens on the second and third levels, where you can soak in breathtaking Hill Country sunsets that pictures simply don't do justice to.

Distinctive Design & Thoughtful Touches
The main house itself boasts a wonderfully unique layout. You'll especially love our butler's pantry, which we've lovingly transformed into a delightful coffee and breakfast station. We've poured energy and love into making this space truly enjoyable for your morning rituals.

A Haven for Your Furry Friends
We're also unique in being incredibly dog-friendly! Your pups are welcome to roam safely and freely within the gated areas spanning the property, giving them plenty of space to explore and enjoy their vacation too.
