Countryside Retreat Near Totnes & Dartmouth
Shepherds Cottage is a beautiful and recently renovated semi-detached cottage that sleeps up to four guests (Cider House is also available next door - please ask for details) located in the tranquil hamlet of Hutcherleigh in the South Hams. The cottage itself is the perfect base and a wonderful home-from-home, offering guests the luxury of ‘countryside living’ with all the amenities you might want from a rural retreat in South Devon.
Here at Your Devon Escape we intend to leave you alone but are on hand to answer any questions you might have.
Shepherd Cottage benefits from a communal orchard roughly ten yards from the front door of the cottage. This is a great space to pick an apple from the tree or enjoy some family garden games and a lovely spot for your four-legged friend to run around with their ball.
There is designated parking for two cars in the communal car park. If you are travelling with your furry friend, we welcome one well-behaved pet for an additional charge (please specify when booking).
If you have an extended family and you are looking to accommodate up to eight guests, then you can also consider the sister cottage, Cider House located right next door, making it very convenient to house grandparents or extended members of the family – please enquire here.
For those who enjoy a round or two of Golf, this property is perfectly positioned for easy access to one of Devon’s scenic golf courses. Whether you’re planning early morning tee times or a relaxed afternoon on the fairway, you’ll find the green just a short drive away. And when the clubs are packed away, you can unwind in comfort – with the coast, countryside, and local charm all within reach.
Nearby beaches of Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands are a fifteen-minute drive away through beautiful Devon countryside. You are a short drive from the wonderful Woodlands Leisure Park, as well as nearby towns of Dartmouth and Totnes.

Shepherds cottage is set on two levels, offering family and friends suitable space for everyone during your holiday. The front terrace, overlooking the hamlet, is a fantastic sunny spot ideal for a morning coffee or an Alfresco evening meal. From the front patio you are able watch the local wildlife run across the roads and wave to the local farmers that are going about their daily business, usually in a tractor! The cottage benefits from a communal orchard roughly ten yards from the front door of the cottage. This is a great space to pick an apple from the tree, or enjoy some family garden games and a lovely spot for your four-legged friend to run around with their ball.

In the summer, the thick walls keep you cool, while in the winter, lighting the wood burner transforms the space into a warm, inviting retreat. From the living room, you will notice a unique touch – an original wooden wall adorned with delicate hand-painted birds and bushes, created by the cottage’s previous owners. We are delighted to share this special feature with you, adding a bit of history to your stay.
The kitchen and dining room offer a traditional, yet well-equipped space, with everything you would need for your holiday. Enjoy preparing an evening meal with the use of the electric Aga and enjoy the charm of the beautiful Belfast sink. A full-sized fridge, freezer and washing machine are also available for your convenience.
Upstairs, the master bedroom features a king-size bed, ideal for sinking into after a soothing soak in the classic roll-top bath. With ample storage space, you will have plenty of room to settle in for the week. The second bedroom includes a double bed, built-in wardrobe and plenty of storage for all your belongings. Between the two bedrooms, you will find a family bathroom with a modern shower to help kick-start your mornings.
For families with little ones, baby equipment like a high chair, stair gate and travel cot are available to hire – just let us know when you book.
