Sophia and Ivan were amazing! They helped us arrange transport to/from the airport, gave us great recommendations of where to eat, what to see, etc. As we were there for 8 days, they arranged for their housekeeper to come in mid-week to clean and freshen up linens. They were very responsive when we had any questions or problems. The house was gorgeous and very spacious! There were 4 adults on our trip, but it could fit more. We really enjoyed the rooftop patio where we could work during the day. Though we did eat out for most meals, the full kitchen was great for keeping snacks and leftovers. If you are visiting Oaxaca, I highly recommend Aldea Tuya and Sophia and Ivan as hosts!
Positive: Host and Manager were great. Property was neat and clean. We did not spend much time at the Unit as we were out for most of the day.Negative: Did not realize how far it was from Centro - not walkable. In our previous 2 stays in Oaxaca, we could literally walk to Centro, good restaurants, and shopping.

We clearly state that the house is in Barrio de Jalatlaco and not in the centre. This neighbourhood is Mexico’s first ‘barrio mágico’ and is loved for its vibrant street art and local community. It’s full of fantastic cafes and restaurants and comes alive especially at día de los muertos. Many of our guests choose to stay in this neighbourhood to be close enough to the city centre but escape to Jalatlaco’s peacefulness in the evening. On Google maps, our house is a 16 minutes walk to Santo Domingo Church which is the heart of the historic centre. For many this is walking distance. We suggest checking the details of a rental before you book or asking the host prior so you know what to expect.

About the host
Hosted by Sophia
We are Sophia (Newcastle, UK) and Ivan (Oaxaca) and we met in a bar in Oaxaca City in 2018. Since then, we have lived in Jalatlaco with our grumpy dog and 1975 VW combi in which we have travelled to Costa Rica and back in search of speciality coffee and local producers. We love to travel and explore new places and we love being hosts as we get to share our favourite experiences of Oaxaca with our guests.
Why they chose this property
Jalatlaco was the first ‘barrio mágico’ in Mexico and it truly is a magical neighbourhood. The place comes alive at night as locals come out to sit around the church, drink coffee with friends or celebrate a quinceañera or wedding parading in the streets. Día de los muertos is an incredible time to visit Oaxaca, especially Jalatlaco.
