About this property
One Long Houses luxury country house
*** Xmas decorations up for December and NY ***
We opened One Long Houses to letting after completing an award winning refurbishment in 2017, but are excited to launch on Vrbo in late 2025. In the words of our previous guests: "great house to chill out", "so cozy", "the house has everything", “fabulous house in a splendidly serene location", "beautiful comfortable house, amazing setting", "so well refurbished", "The house exceeded our expectations".
We poured much effort and love into the restoration of One Long Houses and were delighted to be awarded Period Living magazine's 'Best Project 2018' award. One day we'll make it our permanent home but in the mean time we love sharing it with other families.
Central to the house is the giant double-height living space with a gallery, with the sturdy roof beams illuminated with spot lights. The room forms part for what was once the barn of the farmhouse. It is heated with a large glass fronted woodburner and underfloor heating, and was restored using traditional lime mortar and plastering techniques. The living room has a large curved-flat screen TV with the usual apps (iPlayer, ITVHub etc - and if you subscribe to pay TV such as Netflix or Disney you can use these apps too). There is also a CD-player quad-speaker hi-fi system which you can bluetooth connect to your phone to wirelessly play music. We have a CD and DVD collection too. There is also an upright Yamaha piano which guests are free to use. We do keep it tuned.
The old farmhouse side has a snug hall area with open fire and an additional TV for if the kids have hogged the main one. This is our favourite place to dry out after a long walk.
Next to this is a large well equipped kitchen with American fridge freezer, three ovens, microwave, induction hob, dishwasher, and Nespresso coffee maker.
At the back of the house is a light plate-glass 'cube' where our main dining table resides, with spectacular views across the valley and woodburner for winter nights.
In the main house are 4 upstairs bedrooms (1 super-king, 1 king ensuite, 1 double, 1 twin single). These are accessed via an enclosed staircase from the hall and a separate spiral staircase from the living room. A couple of steps outside the back door and up five or so steps is the 'workshop' super king ensuite annexe bedroom with Juliet balcony overlooking the valley.
There is a separate utility room with washer and drier, iron and ironing board.
2 of the 5 bedrooms are ensuite, plus there are two other family bathrooms (one shower + bath, one shower only) and there is a downstairs WC.
The house is heated throughout by our renewable energy bio-mass boiler, with underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs. We have broadband fibre-to-the-home internet and wifi throughout the house.
A large fenced garden surrounds the house overlooking fields often full of sheep, and the Kentmere mountains beyond. There is ample parking for up to four cars on the driveway and separate parking area.
Guest access
Guests have access to the whole house with the exception of certain cupboards used for cleaning materials and spare bed linen, and one bedroom at the far end of the house is kept locked for the owners.
Other things to note
WiFi - super fast in the main house. We have boosters for the outside Workshop bedroom which is on a separate login (details at the house).
We allow up to 2 well behaved dogs but please keep them off the furniture and for the sake of other guests and our gardener please clear up after them! Please be sure to let us know how many dogs you are bringing when booking.
Arrival 4pm or later, Departure by 10am. We provide starter supplies of tea, coffee, dishwasher tablets, and a bottle of fizz in the fridge! You can pick up provisions at the Spa store in Staveley until 9pm on your way, or the supermarkets in Kendal (Booths, Sainsbury's are our top picks) or Windermere (Booths). Sainsbury's and Tesco do home delivery to the house.
While our cleaning team is doing their utmost to protect you, we ask that you think about them too. Please empty the kitchen bin on departure and clear away all dishes/cutlery into the dishwasher which should be left switched on. THANKS.

About the host
Hosted by Vanessa Griffin
We're originally from Dublin and Worcester, now living in London. We visited the Lake District in 2002 and have returned every year since, buying and renovating our first house in Rydal in 2010, and then fell in love with and bought 1 Long Houses in 2015, and embarked on an extensive restoration which completed in 2017.
We currently live in London and we didn't want the house to be empty for long periods, plus it does cost quite a lot to maintain it, so we really enjoy sharing it with groups and families who love the Lake District and the area, which also allow us to reinvest in maintenance, new roofs, a water bore hole, and so forth. It is not a 'business' for us, it is a home.

Why they chose this property
Kentmere is a very special place. It's a 'dead-end' valley which means it is very quiet with no through traffic. The only way out the other end of the valley is to hike up over the Garstone Pass or up to High Street, the old Roman road atop the fells, part of the famous Kentmere Horseshoe walk, one of the many you can do from our front door. Despite its seclusion, the thriving village of Staveley is just 3 miles down the lane, with its "Mill Yard" collection of shops and cafes, and the excellent Eagle & Child pub. And a short drive away you are in Windermere, Ambleside and beyond.
We also loved the house and its potential, and the magnificent views of the mountains that surround Kentmere which you can sit and enjoy from the house, especially the glass plated Sun/Dining room. Our restoration work won us an award from Period Living magazine which was lovely. We'd been careful to use a conservation architect to manage the project.

What makes this property unique
We've deliberately not crammed in beds and bedrooms, so it is very spacious even for 10 people and we often let it to much smaller groups as well. It is full of our personal posessions - pictures, books, dvds, cds, and we use cotton bedlinen and White Company towels so it really feels like a home not a 'rental'. Comments from our guests confirm this. the living room is very large with a double height barn ceiling, a gallery and second spiral staircase, two seating areas, a large flatscreen tv, hifi and so forth. Surprisingly, broadband connectivity is excellent thanks to the valley's fibre installation.
