About this property
Historic Farmhouse Retreat |South Downs |Sleeps 8
Experience timeless charm at Gallops Cottage, a beautifully restored 16th-century farmhouse surrounded by open countryside and ancient woodland. Just 20 minutes from Brighton and Lewes, and close to the South Downs Way, this characterful retreat blends heritage features with modern comfort — perfect for families or small groups seeking peace, nature, and a touch of history
The Space
Originally built in the late 1500s as an open-hall house, Gallops Cottage has been lovingly preserved. It has exposed beams, wattle and daub walls, low ceilings, and period quirks throughout. Inside you'll find: three character-filled double bedrooms (two upstairs via the main staircase, one king and one zip-and-link (twin or king) and one upstairs via the second staircase, zip-and-link (twin or king)). Please note the third bedroom access is limited through a small door. Suitable for young children and small adults. Not suitable for elderly or anyone with a disability. There are two bathrooms (one upstairs family bathroom with walk-in shower and one downstairs with shower, bath, WC, and washing machine) and a country kitchen fully equipped with an induction hob, built-in oven, fridge-freezer, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker — ideal for preparing meals with local produce. The cottage boasts a stunning dining space with wraparound windows and views across the garden and fields with seating for 8 for leisurely breakfasts or family dinners, two lounges (a snug room perfect for relaxed evenings and a bright dual-aspect living room with seating and TV for socialising). A quiet study room at the far end of the house offers a great spot for reading or catching up on emails with the option of pulling down a sofa bed for two extra guests. Outside, step straight into the countryside. The house opens onto acres of grassland and backs onto Blackbrook Wood known for its spring bluebells. Enjoy private gardens, outdoor seating, a BBQ area and a children’s play area with football goal and secure bike storage.
