About this property

Traditional Spanish Villa In Comares With Swimming Pool And Great Views

Villa Carlitos offers traditional country villa facilities near the stunning hilltop village of Comares on the edge of the Montes de Malaga Natural Park - one hour from Malaga. Bob and Alba Lucia have spent 4 years renovating their property in the small hamlet of Los Ventorros. From the beginning the idea was to use as many recycled or second hand materials as possible. All the doors, for example, have come from 'junk yards' (although you wouldn’t believe it when you see the renovated results) and practically all the furniture is second hand and restored. The result is that everything contributes to the cosy, 'rustic' style that we wanted to create. We enjoy the cosiness of evenings in front of the fire and the refreshingly cool areas of the shady patios under the vines in the summer. Villa Carlitos is for people who appreciate the countryside and value the old instead of the new. If you are amongst these and you want to see a part of 'real' Spain, you will probably enjoy Villa Carlitos as much as we do. The property is spacious and constructed on 3 levels with large outside terraces offering both sunny and shaded aspects. The views across open countryside from both the front and rear terraces are beautiful. Most attractive are the traditional Andalucian features, including beams, heavy wooden doors and window shutters. The log fireplace is a cosy feature where we enjoy dinners with friends around the large dining room table and the small but nice pool is perfect in summer when we can enjoy late dinners on the back patio, with the silhouettes of the mountains as a backdrop and the chirping of the cicardas to keep us company.

Furnished in rustic style with modern comforts, the villa will appeal to anyone wishing to enjoy a traditional Spanish house in a convenient village countryside location.

The welcoming bar/restaurant and village shop is just a few metres walk and there is ample free parking right outside the villa. Comares hilltop village, with views to the Mediterranean coast in the distance, has attractive narrow streets and good facilities ..

About the host

Hosted by Alba Lucía Castellanos

Host profile image
Bob and Alba Lucia have lived in Malaga for around 20 years. He is from UK, having grown up in the south of England, before going to University in Oxford and then working in London and later Torbay. Alba Lucia comes from Colombia and lived for a while in the south of England before coming to Malaga. Bob works in Malaga as the Marketing Director of a leading Spanish language school while Alba Lucia helps to run ASIC (Asociación Asi es Colombia) an association dedicated to showing positive aspects of Colombia, improving the relations between Colombians living in Spain and the Spaniards and to providing services to the Colombian community in Malaga. She also runs the Banco de Tiempo in the east of Malaga, Their 21 years old son, Charlie, is at University in Malaga, and is, of course, football mad, practices triathon and loves the fact that the Comares city council have created one of Spain's longest 'zip-lines' (tiro lineas), together with a rock climbing site and hanging bridges in the village just 7 mins by car from Villa Carlitos. When the house isn't rented we love to invite friends for the weekend for dinners by the fireside in winter and out on the terrace in summer.

Why they chose this property

With its 4 bathrooms and 5-6 bedrooms, Villa Carlitos is ideal for a couple of families with kids or an extended family wanting a relaxing holiday together. It also works for anyone looking to find the real Andalucia, peaceful but not dead (a couple of bars and neighbours around), great walks, plenty of space on the various terraces to relax in and ideal for cooking great, leisurely meals, or going next door to Encarnita in 'El Molino' for lovely Andalucian, home-cooked, comfort-food or to the 'Table Mountain' if you want food a bit more sofisticated.
In the winter, the evenings centre around the log fire with candelight and music or videos and games. Breakfast and lunch can be eaten on the terrace most of the year. In the summer the various terraces ensure that you can always find shade or sun as you like and provide wonderful relaxing environments for late dinners and bottles of wine, star-gazing, listening to the crickets and watching the galactic fights to the death of the geckos against all-comers played out on the wall of the house.
Just an hour from Malaga's international airport and situated on a good-quality tarmac road, Villa Carlitos is relatively easy to get to but offers dramatic mountain and country views with walks from the front door. At around 700 metres above sea-level and in a small hamlet 10 minutes from the white-washed village of Comares, we are in the heart of the Axarquia and a short drive from the Montes of Malaga National Park. The hamlet of Los Ventorros is a combination of the most authentic Andalucian country life (the old men playing dominoes and cards in the bar next door, the sound of goat bells from the local herd, the friendlieness of the local people, the great country recipes) with a touch of the cosmopolitan provided by a few international neighbours from the surrounding villages (Brits, Dutch, German) who have also decided that they enjoy the good life of rural Andalucia.

What makes this property unique

• 1-hour from Malaga’s airport, 30 minutes from the beach, 700 metres above sea-level
• 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps up to 11 comfortably.
• Exposed beams and lots of old wooden doors and features make it very cosy and atmospheric
• A large open log fire is great for fire-side evenings from October through to May
• The kitchen is very well-equipped for those who, like us, enjoy cooking
• The front, back and lower terrace provide lots of space for reading, relaxing, playing games, sun-bathing or whatever. The old vine helps provide lovely shade in summer
• The small pool is perfect for cooling off and the full-sized table tennis table in the basement is a favourite of the kids
• Lots of the furniture, all the doors and quite a lot of fixtures and fittings are second hand or have been re-cycled, creating a warm, bohemian feeling while making the most of existing resources
• Great hill-walking from the front door, the lovely village of Comares 30 mins walk away (10mins by car), mountain biking available in the Montes of Malaga and rock climbing/zip-lining in Comares
• Easy access to the beach in Velez Malaga, an hour and a bit to Granada to visit the Alhambra and even ski in winter, 40 minutes to the historic, cultural and Mediterranean city of Malaga!
