About this property

Allegany State Park Rental in the Forest

Important before booking: READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. See end of description for updated COVID 19 News. Also, a one-week maximum stay at this time. Thank you.

With a pond on one side and a mountain stream on the other, and surrounded by forest, this is the place to get away from it all. Heated Saltillo Tiles in well-appointed kitchen, two full bathrooms, with a piano and pool table for your amusement. Oak and cherry flooring and woodwork complements the totally renovated interior. Cross the bridge over the stream, and you are on your way to a beautiful hike in New York State's largest Park.

Two electric reclining top grain leather couches were delivered 2/2020. Very comfortable, room for three on each with ease. Also an electric recliner. So your viewing pleasure is more than adequate.

There is a firepit, gas grill, an offset smoker/grill. You can while away your evenings, telling ghost stories, roasting wienies or making s'mores over a crackling fire. Kindling is steps away and firewood is available for sale all over the area, but I usually have some here.

We are also children and (mellow) dog friendly---ABSOLUTELY NO pits, pit mixes or aggressive dogs allowed due to past incidents of mischaracterized dogs. Our dogs are friendly to people and other dogs; they run free, and stick around (a great life). More than 6 people, or more than 3 cars; please let me know more. Not out of the realm of the possible., but water/well constraints come into play...to wit:

IMPORTANT: We have a well, and unlike city living, the water supply is not endless. It is good water, but, for example, long showers by guests strain the supply. The well needs to replenish. Any action that can conserve water, such as utilizing the shower quick shutoff valve on the shower head, spacing out showers, is appreciated. Country living does have a few constraints!

Note that I charge additional for guests numbering more than 4, at 20 dollars per night per person, up to 6. Dogs are 10 dollars per night per dog. I'd be more than happy to explain my rationale for these extra costs if you are wondering why. Also very important: Absolutely NO SMOKING or VAPING inside the house. Ashtrays are provided for smoking outdoors, thanks for being considerate of other guests in this regard it is deeply appreciated!

15 Minutes from Ellicottville's skiing (consistently ranked highly in Ski Magazine) and 5 minutes from the Seneca Allegany Casino (with its entertainment and dining excellence), you have vacation options galore. Upon booking, I send details of local things to do with websites to click on to find out more.

The house has a 65-inch screen smart TV in the living room and a smart 49 inch one in the 2nd floor master bathroom, which has an attached deck. DIRECTV provides viewing pleasure; it is a basic service, so bring your Netflix, Amazon, etc. passwords with you.

Three bedrooms, all upstairs, with beds as follows: one King, one Queen, one Full. Both bathrooms are spacious, one upstairs and one downstairs, and the open floor plan with no walls between the Oak Room (with pool table), kitchen and living room make socializing ideal.

Beautiful hiking, with Art Roscoe's ski/bike/hike trails and Stone Tower, with its stunning views, but a short distance away. There are 5 mountain streams, with no habitation upstream, in the back 40, which is surrounded by Allegany State Park. You can pitch your tent nearby and still be able to use the facilities; perfect for a family.

As we know the COVID situation is still very fluid, and it is still a health issue in September 2023. I have blocked off days to allow for self-sanitizing before I go in and clean. These blocks are not set in stone, I've blocked off days during the week that may be available, contact me if you see your days are blocked, they may be available.

I also ask that people bring their own pillows and blankets, though I will provide them if absolutely necessary. Note that I will have to wash all of them after you leave, so that is an added hurdle both in time and cost. LET ME KNOW IN ADVANCE. I rotate three sets of sheets for each bed and they are washed and dried at higher heats than in the old days.

All that said, this is a great place to forget about COVID, the rat race, the daily stresses of living...if only for a short while. Nature is therapeutic, and you walk out the door and hike immediately. A crackling fire at night. Feeding fish in the pond. You will feel rejuvenated.

Thanks so much for your interest and know that once you get here (I live on site), I leave you alone except to help as a concierge of sorts. Cheers.

Came for the eclipse but got so much more
We had such an amazing time here. The accommodations were so relaxing and comfortable. We played games, watched movies, hiked, fed the fish in the pond, played pool, made s’mores over a bonfire, played with the dogs and even tried to fly a kite unsuccessfully. Then we experienced the eclipse at a local event and had a blast. This is an amazing place to do whatever your heart desires!

Had a great stay. Sid and his dogs Pup and Maggie were great. The place and location worked well for us while we were in town for the Snocross races at Seneca Casino.

Wonderful stay. Surrounded by nature, quiet, and very spacious home. The heated floor was a treat after an adventurous winter hike. Close drive to local amenities. Felt safe and had a great stay!

Great getaway, great host!
We had a wonderful long weekend at ‘The Camp’, a spacious, well appointed rental in the forest. Host Sidney is gracious, interesting and very helpful. We made good use of the pool table and piano in the evening after skiing, and enjoyed the library of jazz music available on vinyl. We also enjoyed visits from the pups! The sloped walkway from the parking area to the house was a bit slippery due to the weather but there is a handrail. If the opportunity arises we would definitely go back!

Nice location and has all the things needed for a great stay. The parking is very tight and in the winter I wouldn’t recommend unless you have an all wheel drive. Super nice host!!

About the host

Host profile image
One host is a Cultural Anthropologist who has lived throughout the United States as well as years outside of it. The other host remains committed to carrying on the traditions of her Seneca ancestors. Both are engaging and committed to going beyond the norm in order to make our guests' experience one never to forget. We both were born on the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation, and have deep ties to the communities in our locale, which also includes Ellicottville, the Amish just west of us, Allegany State Park and of course, the Seneca and non-Seneca communities below this mountain retreat.

Why they chose this property

This house was built by the owner, down to harvesting the trees which are now the flooring and woodwork. He also drove his truck down to Saltillo, Mexico to personally purchase the tiles. It replaces the original "camp" which he helped build with his father in the early 1960s, and was a quick getaway from their home in Salamanca. In the spirit of Thoreau, and with unabashed humor and goodwill, this property has evolved, and will continue to evolve, for as long as, as they say, "the Lord is willing and if the creek don't rise."

What makes this property unique

Cultural tourism is important to us; we can introduce you to the various cultures and people of this area that you could never access through any other way. Seriously. But if you want to be left alone, and enjoy the quiet and solitude that this place offers, we fully understand.
Want to meet Amish tanners? Done. Seneca artists? No problem. Loggers or hunters? Just give us the word. Intellectuals or a hard working young woman on her diary farm? Meet those who raise trout at the Randolph Fish Hatchery? Easily arranged. Go to the largest Spiritualist Community in the world? A quick drive. We are ideally located for day trips to several wine countries, Niagara Falls, the burgeoning list of must-see attractions of Buffalo, and what was once the highest railroad viaduct in the world. And more.
