The Space:
This is a spectacular place to stay, combining all the modern comforts to make for an exceptionally relaxing break, a huge south facing garden, oodles of parking and a games room with vintage style in spades. There’s a very flexible bed set up: each of the three superking rooms can be converted to twins making for 8 beds in total.
The location, just minutes from everything Oxford has to offer but set on a lane with woodland surroundings, is exceptional. Whether you’re looking for a family gathering or a group of friends or colleagues, this large Oxford home is perfect for you.
Downstairs, there’s a large kitchen, dining for 10 and a lounge that takes you right back in time! Designed and built in 1937 by two powerhouses of the modern movement, Godfrey Samuel and Valentine Harding, your holiday home is Grade 2 listed thanks to the numerous architecture-designed features. There’s a pool room for games with the whole crew, and a snug with more entertainment too. This house really makes the perfect spot for your gathering. Perhaps the biggest treat, though, is outside, where a huge lawned garden backs onto woodland and there’s parking for 5+ cars.
The pool room is a retro treat and sure to be a memorable feature of your stay! We provide the cues and balls to go with your pool table. There’s a hatch through to the kitchen for drinks and snacks and a door to the stunning outdoor space too. With original art, it’ll give you super-cool 30s vibes and also providing masses of entertainment for the whole family.
And there’s more… an additional snug provides even more entertainment space with a small table and chairs, a comfy chair and an arcade game. The perfect spot for children and teenagers to relax!
The enormous garden is a huge asset for your stay. Whether it’s evening drinks on the south facing terrace, lounging on the large outdoor sofas or a simple game of ball on the lawn with the children, it’s the perfect space for you to make memories. Your sunny terrace overlooks the large lawn and the woodland beyond, with established trees for shade.
At the front of the house lies the large driveway. Gated for security and with ample parking for 5 or more cars, you’ll enjoy the space for everyone to gather and begin your stay. When someone wants to pop out, there’s no need for everyone to move as the driveway space is flexible.
The kitchen makes the perfect central space for your stay, with plenty of room and equipment to cater for a big group. While some of the kitchen features are listed for their design value, the kitchen combines old and new, with state of the art appliances in the central island. The dishwasher means easy clean ups and the two fridges provide plenty of space for your food, drinks and holiday snacks! There’s ample glassware and crockery, so that you can celebrate any occasion. There are also two ovens, meaning you can really cook up a storm for the whole family. Some kitchen stools make the perfect spot for a chat while food is being prepared. You’ll also find the iron and ironing board in one of the cupboards and be able to make use of the high chair, too.
The lounge and dining space really makes you step back in time: the bookcases around the walls are listed as a design feature and packed with books, jigsaws and games for all the family and the original art adds to the 30s feel. There’s even a bell button from the house’s previous life with servants! This light space overlooks the enormous garden with windows running the length of the room. Two generous sofas mean you can cosy up after a day of exploring, and there are plenty of blankets and cushions. You can enjoy the gas fire in the cooler months, too. Dining space for the whole group makes this the perfect place to gather and celebrate or just enjoy a simple breakfast overlooking the garden.
The bedrooms and three of the four bathrooms lie upstairs. Two of the bedrooms are king; the other three can be superking or twin – choose what works perfectly for your group.
Bedroom 1 offers a particularly special stay. You’ll enjoy the comfort of a king bed, dressed in 100% cotton bedding and with a 30s palm tree theme, matching the house’s architecture. This room is at the farthest end of the corridor, enjoying a quiet spot, and with a neighbouring full bathroom too. Room-darkening blinds and the sumptuous bedding make sure you’re in for the perfect night’s sleep. Prepare for celebrations or exploring what the area has to offer at the period dressing table and make use of ample storage with hanging and drawer space too. You’ll enjoy a morning cuppa in the comfy arm chair overlooking the garden from your large window.
Another large room, the second bedroom is a superking that can be split into two singles if you prefer – just let us know. This flexibility makes it perfect for family or friend groups. More in-keeping bedding combines with floor to ceiling curtains to make for a great night’s sleep. In the morning, with the incredible sunny views over the garden, you’ll want to take a few minutes to just enjoy the peace. The built in wardrobe and vintage chest of drawers mean there’s plenty of room for you to settle in and the vintage dressing table makes the perfect spot for preparing for an evening out as well as another reminder of the house’s vintage style. A special feature of this room is the book shelves, containing every book Wilbur Smith ever wrote and lots of other reading material; you might need to let the rest of the family in to share them! Your very own reading nook and 30s chair gives you the perfect spot for some quiet and relaxation.
The third bedroom is a further super king that can be split into two singles with retro bedding matching the super-cool house style. It is also linked via a sliding pocket door to bedroom 4, so the two together make a brilliant family suite. From this bedroom, you’ll enjoy more south facing garden views and great storage with a built in wardrobe. There’s another dressing table (with hair-dryer) and stool and a comfy chair for relaxing. For families, there’s also a baby changing table in the corner, making this the perfect stress-free space.
In bedroom 4, which can be reached from the main corridor or through the sliding door it shares with bedroom 3, enjoy a stunning feature fire place, in line with the house design, as well as floor to ceiling views out across the garden through the patio doors (please note the doors are locked shut for safety). You’ll appreciate the dual aspect and light-filled space (with black out blinds and curtains for a good night’s sleep of course). This is a further superking room that can be split into two singles, and also has dressing table and comfy chair for taking in the incredible view.
Finally, bedroom 5 is a king, with more comfortable bedding and views out onto the trees. Get ready for the day at the dressing table and enjoy the ample storage in the form of hanging rail and drawers. Enjoy being right next to the bathroom from this room, too.
All of the four bathrooms (one of which is a downstairs wetroom) allow you to luxuriate in huge fluffy towels, stylish design and a range of showers and baths.
With all this to make use of within your holiday home, don’t miss out on the surroundings! The secluded location on a lane with just a few other houses makes this the perfect peaceful retreat. But you will also be just two miles from everything Oxford city centre has to offer (and train station), minutes from an outdoor pool at Hinksey, Blenheim Palace and Bicester Shopping Centre. The unique combination of being so easily accessed from the city and the A34 while being set in such a quiet spot won’t be beaten.
