About this property

Sleeps 16 | Georgian Manor, Yorkshire Dales, Dent | Dog-friendly, 5 acres

Whernside Manor is a Grade II listed Georgian house at the head of Dentdale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with Whernside, the highest of the Three Peaks, rising behind it. The Dales Way passes the end of the drive and the River Dee is a few minutes' walk down it. The house has just come out of a five-year restoration by craftsmen who have worked on many of the North's great houses, and this is its first season of letting. It is let as a whole, for up to 16 guests, with no other guests or staff on site.

The house sleeps 16 in six bedrooms. Five are conventional bedrooms: the master suite, with a super-king bed, a dressing room and a bathroom with a freestanding bath and wet-room shower; the Yellow Room (king, en suite with bath); the Courtyard Room (king, en suite shower room); the Blue Room, a twin with its bathroom next door; and the Eyrie on the top floor, a queen with a bathroom beside it. The sixth, Steerage, is a dormitory of six single beds in a room as long as a cricket pitch, which works equally well for cousins, a walking club or the younger half of a wedding party. All five bathrooms are new, with underfloor heating and heated towel rails, and there is a cloakroom downstairs. Toiletries are made in Sedbergh. Two cots, high chairs and bath seats are available.

Downstairs, the entrance hall is tiled. The drawing room has an upright piano. The study is the quiet room, and there are books throughout the house. The sitting room has French windows onto the courtyard. The dining room is panelled and seats the whole party at one table. The kitchen-diner has a six-zone induction hob, two ovens, a fridge-freezer with a separate drinks fridge and a second fridge-freezer in the cellar; there is a utility and boot room with a washing machine and tumble dryer, and a wine cellar that guests are welcome to use for their own bottles. Georgian shutters throughout.

Outside, the south-facing courtyard has a fire pit, festoon lighting and outdoor dining. Beyond it are lawns, woodland and a private bridlepath that leads straight onto the fell, so a walk up Whernside, or a run along the Dales Way, starts at the door. The grounds are about five acres. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome (£50 per dog per stay).

The house has gigabit fibre with Wi-Fi in every room and a desk in every bedroom, so a group that needs to keep a few people working during the week can. Mobile signal is patchy in the dale, as it is everywhere here; Wi-Fi calling works.

Dent, with its cobbled streets, two pubs and a village shop, is about a mile away. Dent station, the highest mainline station in England, is a ten-minute drive, on the Settle to Carlisle line; Oxenholme (West Coast main line, under three hours from London) is about 30 minutes by car. Sedbergh, Hawes, Ingleton and the Ribblehead Viaduct are within half an hour; Windermere is about an hour. Manchester is about an hour and a half.

The house appeared as the Bronte parsonage in Emily (2022), with Emma Mackey; the rooms look much as they do in the film.

Celebrations are welcome. Gatherings that bring in people not staying at the house, such as a lunch the day after a wedding, are welcome by prior arrangement. The house is a listed Georgian building: floors slope a little, the stairs are steep in places, and the top floor is up two flights; there is a step at the front door. The grounds are not fenced from the river and the fell, so small children need watching outside. There is no hot tub.

Check-in from 3pm by key safe, check-out by 12 noon. Prices include VAT and all fees; we do not add a cleaning charge. Bed linen, towels, a welcome hamper and an initial supply of firewood for the fire pit are included.

About the host

We're a family of five - a British husband, American wife and three young children, with a large extended family on both sides of the Atlantic. We love spending time outdoors, whether hiking, swimming, exploring or just playing badminton and croquet in the garden. We enjoy hosting and entertaining, but of course many of the best days are spent in one room as a family reading books and working through board games!

Why they chose this property

We travel a lot to rural areas professionally, and we think the Yorkshire Dales - and Dentdale in particular - have some of the most beautiful countryside on Earth. We first discovered the area on weekend trips during university studies, and for us it represents the perfect combination of a true rural escape away from the crowds, and convenience for activities, things to see and amenities. The Dales' caves and waterfalls are a particular highlight, but our single favourite thing to do is walk through Whernside Manor's private woods, climb the stile onto the Dales Way and make the short hike up to Whernside Tarns to paddle in the immaculate, cold water and enjoy the spectacular views of clouds, sun and rain rolling down the dale.

What makes this property unique

At Whernside Manor we wanted to capture the lessons of countless nights spent in rented hotels, houses and huts of all kinds to create a place where the things that matter most are executed to perfection. In a remote place like Dentdale, that means starting with the basics - heating you don't have to think about, unlimited hot water, no damp or draughts, internet that means you can work and live as easily as if you were in a city. From there we moved to bathrooms - as little sharing as possible, generous in size, individually designed. Beds large, comfortable, with crisp linens. A kitchen equipped to handle whatever you or a private chef can dream up. Rooms interesting enough that everyone runs through the house, excited to discover the next one. Grandeur that makes your time at Whernside feel special, but not so precious that you can't sprawl on every chair. And knowing first hand how hard it can be to travel with small children, we wanted to handle those worries. Multiple full-size cots, toys, children's books, bath mats, bath seats, bath toys, formula jugs and more are stored in the house and can brought out on request. In short, all the things we have spent years cramming into the boot of a car or stuffing in a footwell.
Over the past four years Whernside Manor has been renovated into our ideal of an uncompromising country house, and we hope you will agree!
