Outside, Vernon Cottage has a beautiful South facing private garden purely for the apartment guests to enjoy which has full sun from morning ‘til night and there is private driveway parking for at least two cars. The Island also has a fantastic bus service and the bus stops in all directions are just a minute away.
Vernon Cottage is the original thatch in the Old Village built in 1817 and has the best orientation. It offers lovely far reaching views across the Village and to the hills beyond. The Cottage is steeped in history and was at the heart of the Island smuggling empire in the 19th Century with a secret tunnel (no longer used!) running all the way to the iconic Shanklin Chine. Instead it’s a two minute pavement walk to the Chine with waterfall path which runs down to the sea. Alternatively, it’s only a five minute free walk from the Cottage to the clifftop with stunning views and an easy curving slope down to the Award winning Shanklin Beach below - the Countryfile Magazine “Beach of the Year’. From here you can walk all the way to Sandown along the delightful clifftop path or meander along the sandy shoreline or revetment below. The beach offers miles of golden sand, sea view restaurants, often with live music, cafes and a host of family-friendly entertainment including three excellent Crazy Golf courses and the swashbuckling Pirates Cove with bumper boats, mini golf karts and Captain Jack’s Runaway Train!
Shanklin frequently wins the accolade of ‘sunniest place in the UK’ and offers lots of old-fashioned timeless bucket and spade family fun alongside windsurfing, kayaking and jet skiing for the more adventurous. The Rowing Club holds an annual Regatta and you can while away a lazy afternoon at the picturesque Village Cricket Club.
There are fabulous coastal and countryside walk from the Village and the Island has more than 200 miles of cycle ways.
The Island has a huge variety of attractions and events from Queen Victoria’s stunning Osbourne House and Gardens, Blackgang Chine for children of all age-groups(!), Animal Sanctuaries and Dinosaur Trails to the world famous IOW Festival, Round The Island Yacht Race and Cowes Week, one of the oldest and most respected regattas in the world. Add to this fresh air and rolling countryside, beautiful beaches, fantastic food and local produce to world class dining menus and there is simply nowhere better to be than the Isle of Wight. Enjoy!
Transport
The Old Village has regular buses all day - West to Ventnor (sit on the top deck and marvel at the amazing views), East to Sandown and Ryde and North to the Island capital, Newport, where you can catch further buses to all corners of the Island. There are also open topped tourist buses in the summer months to the world famous Needles and the Downs plus a local bus to the seafront for those less nimble on their feet. Shanklin is lucky to be directly linked to Ryde Pier Head on the Island’s only train line (a fun experience in itself!) and the FastCat passenger ferry to Portsmouth with direct trains to London.

About the host
Hosted by Susan de Vere
Hi, I'm Sue and I split my time between Shanklin Old Village on the Isle of Wight and the South of France. I love them both. For me, the Gulf of St Tropez and Old Shanklin are the jewels in the crown. The lovely sea, sandy beaches, the beautiful scenery, local produce and local wine! They have so much in common!
I run two listings with my son Richard and I hope you enjoy your stay and everything these wonderful parts of the world have to offer.
