A charming romantic bolt-hole within an historic Grade II listed building, this pretty cottage is part of a terrace of three 17th century former almshouses on a protected historically significant site. Malmsbury, often called The Gateway to the Cotswolds, is a thriving and ancient market town in north Wiltshire on the edge of the Cotswolds, and whilst a destination in itself, also enjoys easy access to Tetbury, Cirencester and Bath.
With a abundance of period features including mullion leaded light windows, this bijou hideaway welcomes you straight into the charming kitchen and a small dining area with bistro-style dining furniture for two. Upstairs, the cosy bedroom features an antique half-tester bed, with the shower room next door. Although there is no allocated outside space, we are told by the owners they often put a table and two chairs (supplied) under the 12th century arch. Otherwise, you are directly opposite a lovely small riverside park which is perfect for al fresco dining.
This delightful Grade II listed Almshouse was originally constructed from the remains of the late Norman hospital of St John. A beautiful 12th century arch still exists on the side of this house which may well have been the original entrance to the former building. The existing house and its two neighbours are thought to have been created in their current form in the late 16th/early 17th century. Above the arch is an inscription dated 1694 relating to the yearly gifting of 10 pounds to the poor people of Malmesbury. The River Avon runs through the town providing great walking and fishing opportunities. Malmesbury is England's oldest borough with picturesque winding streets, full of independent shops, restaurants and pub; and a weekly farmers and artisan market. Previously named Best Place to Live in the South West, this vibrant and ancient market town is joining the bidding for the first UK Town of Culture 2028.
Additional Information: Sorry, no children, however a babe in arms sleeping in own Moses basket is welcome (there is limited room in the bedroom which will not accommodate a full travel cot). One small well-behaved dog is welcome. There is shared gated access to the three almshouses. Allocated parking space. Please note, we are unable to provide a welcome hamper or starter pack at this property.
