About this property

Kids Love the Bunks, Family Getaway, Mountain View

This is the biggest room at Rathescar Grove, and it's built with families in mind — a king bed for the adults, bunk beds the kids will claim before you've even unpacked, and a sofa if anyone wants their own quiet corner.

There's no balcony on this room, but the window view does the job just as well: farmland, grazing cattle, and the Cooley and Mourne mountains stretched out in front of you, the kind of view that's genuinely nice to wake up to rather than just look at once.

Private ensuite, and a proper amount of floor space compared to the other two rooms — enough that you're not tripping over bags and shoes by day two.

Inside you've got a small kitchen setup — fridge, kettle, microwave, toaster — so mornings don't depend on getting everyone dressed and out the door before coffee. We stock the room with bread, milk, tea, coffee, butter and jam on arrival, which matters more with kids than it sounds like it should.

We're right off Junction 12 of the M1 in Dunleer, Co. Louth — about 15 minutes from Drogheda, roughly 40 minutes from Dublin Airport, and around 1 hour 10 from Belfast City Airport. Easy to get to, easy to get out from, which matters when you're travelling with children and luggage for four.

For days out, this is genuinely well-placed. Funtasia waterpark in Drogheda and Emerald Park in Meath are both within easy reach for a full day that'll tire the kids out properly. If anyone in the group wants something quieter, Newgrange and Monasterboice are a straightforward drive through the Boyne Valley and make for a good half-day of history without it feeling like a school trip. The Boyne Ramparts Walk and Cooley Peninsula are both nearby too if you'd rather just get outside and walk it off.

If you're part of a wedding party, we're well placed for several of the area's venues — Darver Castle and Segrave Barns in Co. Louth, and Ballymagarvey Village in Co. Meath a little further out but still within range for a weekend stay. If your family's booking around a wedding, message us — we're happy to help coordinate with any other rooms you need.

Self-check-in, no lockbox — front door unlocked 3pm–9pm daily. Arriving later, especially with tired kids? Just message us ahead of time and we'll sort key collection so nobody's standing outside. Standard checkout is 11:30am; late checkout to 2pm is available for €30 if it works with the next guest's turnover — worth asking first rather than assuming. No breakfast served, but every room comes stocked with the basics, plus your own fridge, kettle, microwave and toaster. Free WiFi and free on-site parking included. This room comfortably sleeps 4. No pets, please, and smoking stays outdoors only, away from the rooms. Quiet hours run 10pm–7am, and Rathescar Grove isn't set up for parties, hen dos or stag groups — for those, we can point you toward one of the bigger venues nearby.

It's a proper base for a family trip — enough space to not be on top of each other, and a view worth the price of admission on its own.

About the host

Hosted by SOS Stays

Host profile image
We're Sos Stays — Sós is the Irish word for a break, which is exactly what we try to give people. We manage a small number of properties across Louth, Meath and Newry, and Rathescar Grove was the first house we took on, which makes it a bit of a favourite.

We're not a big hotel chain and we're not trying to be. What we care about is guests actually getting looked after — someone who replies quickly, a place that's properly clean and stocked before you arrive, and honest information rather than a listing full of vague adjectives. If something's wrong with your stay, we'd genuinely rather hear about it and fix it than have you leave quietly disappointed.

Hosting, for us, is less about being present in the room and more about making sure everything's sorted before you get there — self-check-in, a stocked fridge, a clear message with everything you need. We like this part of Ireland, we think Rathescar Grove is a genuinely good base for exploring it, and we want your stay here to feel like an actual break, not just a place to sleep between plans.

Why they chose this property

The Boyne Valley doesn't shout about itself, and that's exactly why we like it. You've got Newgrange and Monasterboice within easy reach — genuinely ancient, older than the pyramids, and nowhere near as crowded as you'd expect for something that significant. Then there's the landscape right around Rathescar Grove itself: proper working farmland, cattle in the fields, and the Cooley and Mourne mountains sitting on the horizon from the balcony rooms.

It's also just well placed. Right off the M1, close enough to Drogheda for a good dinner or a coffee, close enough to Dundalk and the Cooley Peninsula for a day out, and within striking distance of Carlingford Lough if you want a proper afternoon by the water. Families are near Funtasia and Emerald Park; if you're here for a wedding, several of the area's best venues — Darver Castle, Segrave Barns, Ballymagarvey Village — are all a comfortable drive away.

Mostly, though, we chose this area because it does what a good break should: gives you somewhere quiet to land, without being in the middle of nowhere. You're never more than half an hour from something worth seeing, and never more than a few steps from doing absolutely nothing at all.

What makes this property unique

What sets this room apart is the space — it's the biggest at Rathescar Grove, built properly for a family rather than squeezed to fit one. A king bed, bunk beds the kids will love, and a sofa if anyone wants a quiet corner to themselves. No balcony here, but the window view holds its own: farmland, grazing cattle, and the Cooley and Mourne mountains right there, a genuinely nice thing to wake up to.

Location does real work too. We're right off Junction 12 of the M1 in Dunleer, Co. Louth — close enough to Drogheda for dinner out, close enough to Funtasia and Emerald Park for a full family day, and close enough to Newgrange and Monasterboice for a morning of history that doesn't feel like homework. Both Dublin and Belfast airports are a manageable drive, so this works well as either a destination stay or a stop on a longer trip. Wedding parties are well placed too — Darver Castle, Segrave Barns and Ballymagarvey Village are all within a comfortable drive if you're travelling for a wedding weekend.

We keep things simple: self-check-in so nobody's waiting around with tired kids, a room stocked with breakfast basics so the first morning is easy, and quick responses if anything comes up. No shared corridors, no communal breakfast small talk, no party atmosphere next door — just proper space, a good view, and a quiet part of the country to actually relax in.
