Charming period cottage quietly located in the centre of Winchester
Charming period cottage quietly situated in one on Winchester's quaint old streets.
This renovated cottage still retains the old features which give it plenty of character - old fireplaces and doors and twisty old staircase.
It is ideally situated in the city centre, so all the historic sites, the world class restaurants, bars, live theatre and markets are a very short stroll, there are also many delightful walking and cycling trails along the river and up onto the famous South Downs.
This cottage makes a very homely and comfortable base to come back to after a day out exploring or at work, and the beautifully fitted out kitchen/dining room invites you to enjoy a take away or home cooked meal.
During the summer months you can enjoy the garden with its terrace for al-fresco dining or relaxing, this is accessed by a flight of quite steep steps which are unsuitable for those with restricted mobility and small children should be supervised when playing on them.
The cottage is a terraced cottage, typical of the Victorian old houses in many cities in England, this means it has other houses attached on each side of it, the area directly outside the back door is a yard half of which belongs to this cottage and half to the neighbouring cottage, there is a steep flight of stairs which is also shared with the next door house leading to another terrace which is for the exclusive use of guests in our cottage, each cottage has its own terraced garden.
The cottage is located in a quiet pretty old street which is part of a conservation area, as such we are unable to change the old windows, so they are single glazed and in the winter months are likely to have some condensation on the inside, but we provide attractive plantation shutters which improve the heat insulation at the front of the house - the windows at the back are all double glazed..

We had a wonderful stay at this house. It was very clean and cozy. There were movies for the kiddo to watch, and it was easy walking to shops and groceries. The house was perfect for us.
We spent two weeks in this cosy and very english cottage.

Quiet, perfect location & size
The cottage is cozy and comfortable. We slept well between convenient walks along Itchen waterways and easy walks into town. Great location, sweet peaceful lodging, glad we stayed here.
The town of Winchester is well worth an extended visit as there is lots to see in the town and surrounding area. The accommodation was very clean, well equipped and homey. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and highly recommend it.
Very nice property centrally located in Winchester
Really enjoyed our stay - the cottage is very nice and really couldn't be closer to the centre for access to historic sites (cathedral, college etc) and shops. Also convenient for walks out along the river and up St Catherine's Hill for great views. Good kitchen facilities etc within the property. Host was helpful as and when needed.
Perfect little cottage with character, walking distance to high street shops, cathedral, river Itchen paths and numerous pubs!
Watched the coronation at the cathedral with relatives
Close to many Hampshire attractions ; Jane Austen’s house, Stonehenge and Salisbury
Winchester is a lovely town a shirt train ride from London
This is a lovely, comfortable and clean cottage. Ideal location for exploring Winchester on foot. The photo of the rear steps is accurate but guests should note that access from the front of the property is easy with only one small step up to the front door so don’t be put off. Parking permit provided. Caroline was easy to communicate with. An all round enjoyable stay.

The house was well presented & as per the published description. It was in a very good location with a very easy walk into the city & attractions. The outside sitting area was good, although as stated by the owner, the steps were steep but manageable & I am in my eighties. The outside table has seen better days. Inside was OK, again the stairs were steep but manageable. An enjoyable place to stay.

Thank you for your kind review.
Not to future bookings - the outside table has now been replaced with a new one!
We spent two weeks at the Pilgrims
Way cottage. It was clean, comfortable and within 7-8 minutes walk to High Street and the Cathedral. The kitchen was fully furnished and we cooked several meals for 7 people there. The beds were comfortable and the shower worked perfectly. We spent time with our son and his family who live in Winchester and it was a special time of year. The Christmas market and the activities at the Cathedral were an added treat. We will definitely consider booking this cottage for future visits.

Comfortable English home ideally located
This is a typical quaint English home that has been modernized in the bathroom and kitchen. There are two small bedrooms upstairs and the stairs are narrow and steep, but very manageable for us; however, may be problematic for the elderly or for small children. The house is located witin two blocks of High Street with its restaurants and shops. St. John's street is a quiet one way lane with sidewalks on either side. The house is clean and well managed. We loved it and will definitely return.

Thank you for your kind review, we are glad you enjoyed the cottage, and look forward to welcoming you back.
Very unpleasant experience for the 10 days I stayed in the house. The furniture in the house is very dilapidated and the outdoor furniture was broken and usuable when I arrived. In addition, on one day there was a gabbage came out in the courtyard which I suppose is private. Upon enquiry, the host told me that it was shared with another house. Subsequently, the information shown on the website was amended accordingly. The host is not very friendly at all.

We are very proud of all the 5 star reviews we have had for this cottage, but it obviously was completely different to what this guest was expecting, maybe they have never stayed in an old cottage in the UK before. In response to this completely unfair review we would like to make sure that guests are aware that the cottage is a traditional victorian terraced cottage, which means that the area outside the back door is half for our cottage and half for the next door house, we have now provided these neighbours with a bin to put their rubbish in so their rubbish will not be an issue in the future. These guests arrived on the first dry day after 6 months of rain here and we had not had a chance to clean up the garden furniture,
It was a bit wet but not broken or unsuable as she states - we replaced it as soon as she told us she was unhappy and we also took away the neighbours rubbish. I am not sure what they expected from the cottage but the furnishings most certainly are not 'delapidated' as she states and during her stay here she made no mention to us that she was so unhappy with the house. We replied to her concerns regarding the garden straight away, so I am surprised she thought we were not friendly - maybe our messages translated into her language came across differently to how they were intended. If you are considering booking please ignore this review and instead look at all the other ones where guests have been more than happy. Please see the many positive comments made by previous guests.

In response to the above review, the rug in the sitting room was replaced with a new one, we are sorry that this guest did not like the new one! The cleaner must have missed the cupboard when doing the cleaning, so we will make sure she cleans inside the cupboard next time.
Great base for exploring Winchester and the surrounding area
Easy booking and check-in process. Owner very responsive to queries.
Great base in Winchester, easy walking distance into the town centre and well located for river walks and play grounds.
Parking permit provided so easy if driving to the cottage and also for doing day trips.
A lovely cottage in a great location. The cottage is very well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay .
The milk, biscuits and Prosecco were unexpected and very welcome ! Provision of a visitor parking permit meant we could park easily in the street.

Lovely, well-equipped cottage in a perfect location.
Excellent stay, except for two errors in the online listing, which did not realy effect us:
The facilities list a washer and drier - it's only a washer;
also listed is satellite or cable - there is only FreeView.
Minor points, but the listing should be amended.

Sorry for the misunderstanding on these two points - there is a dryer for the washing which is for drying clothes outside . There is cable wi fi , the tv is a smart tv which gets free view as well as other internet tv services.
It suited us (two adults and a toddler) perfectly for a 6 night stay in Winchester. Nice big kitchen-diner. Lovely quiet road, very close to town centre, short walks, playgrounds etc. Always found there was space to park outside the property, using the parking permit provided.

About the host

We have been running our holiday letting and b&b business in Winchester for over 20 years and now own and manage properties from small one bedroom apartments to several 2 bedroomed houses all of which have their own very different characteristics. We also live in Winchester, a city which has so much to offer.
Why they chose this property
We bought this cottage because we thought our guests would enjoy the original features in the cottage giving it character, the garden and the quiet central location
What makes this property unique
Comfortable, cosy cottage to pop in and out of while exploring and enjoying the historic sites and world class shops and restaurants in this exciting city. Relax and dine al fresco in the sunny garden in the summer, or enjoy cooking and eating in the stylish kitchen and chilling out in the sitting room with its original fireplace lit up by candles.
