About this property

Sweet Little Boho Cottage at Downing Hollow Farm

New high speed fiber optic internet!
Downing Hollow Farm is a magical place full of sunshine and babbling creeks and mysterious forests. It’s a place you can watch the fireflies lift up from the pastures in June, hear the whippoorwill sing her lonesome song and enjoy the cool air drifting down through the hollow. Stay overnight in the cozy cottage and cook to your heart’s delight in a separate building called the Chuckwagon, a commercial kitchen, which also houses the bathroom, shower and a great front porch for relaxing and eating outside. There is no bathroom in the cabin, but the jaunt to the bathroom is short, with a sidewalk and well lit. Pets are are more than welcome, in fact, they are encouraged.
The cottage, originally a Mennonite tack room, is an Indian-inspired tiny house that's rustic on the outside, exotic on the inside. Decorated with tawny reds, burnished oranges and vibrant saffron, the cozy cottage has a queen bed, a working vintage typewriter, a record player with records, mini fridge, microwave and a giant picture window with a view of the forest.
Cottage guests have access to a fully equiped kitchen/community room called the Chuckwagon, with 60 inch range, prep tables, refrigerator, freezer, sun-room, bathroom/shower, coffee maker and a beautiful cypress front porch with rocking chairs and farmhouse table. Cottage guests use the bathroom and shower in the Chuckwagon. This is a separate building about 25 feet from the cottage, connected by sidewalk and very well lit at night. There is NO BATHROOM in the cottage. I also have an outdoor wood-fired oven, fire pit, and charcoal grill. Through the summer, you’ll encounter migratory and native birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, lizards, raccoons, groundhogs, foxes, deer and owls along the paths cut through the pastures of wildflowers.
It's as rural as it gets in Olivehill Tn. Our country road is paved well in spots, bumpy in some spots. Our driveway is a grassy lane leading way back into the hollow. Take it easy there for sure! There are two outside security cameras in use and monitored only by the property owner. There are outdoor security cameras at the entrance to the driveway, the barn and the greenhouse. They are actively monitored for vehicles coming and going.

Downing Hollow Farm is located 6 miles off the the Trail of Tears National Scenic Highway and 30 minutes from the Natchez Trace Parkway. Float down Indian Creek in a canoe or kayak with rental just 7 miles away. If you are a Civil War buff then Hardin County is the place to be. Shiloh National Park and Battlefields are an easy drive just 30 minutes away from the farm. Even closer is the Tennessee River Museum in Savannah and the Crump Flea Market across the Tennessee River from Savannah. Catch record-breaking catfish in the waters of Pickwick Lake at Pickwick Landing State Park, 30 miles away. There you can access swimming areas, boat rentals, jump off waterfalls, golf and eat fried catfish and hushpuppies at the local restaurants.

Cute little bungalow, wonderful quiet location!
If you’re looking for an out of the box, secluded place to stay, with a pretty drive with peace and quiet, this is it! Such an adorable little bungalow, backed up to a creek a hill, we sept so cozy. Extremely nice property to explore, beautiful kitchen to use, and a nice bathroom. Lori was so wonderful and helpful, and super accommodating. Her doggies were the cutest, and we thoroughly enjoyed playing catch with them. It was raining at night, and sitting on the kitchen front porch in the rocking chairs, was nice to tap on/in. All in all, a great visit!

Great getaway with family
We had a family gathering and enjoyed the total peace and quiet. The property is beautiful. From the accommodations to the woods hills and creeks everything was wonderful. The boys really enjoyed the brick oven and fire pit. This is a great place to visit and get away from the rest of the world.

Peaceful
The owner shared helpful info and was quick to respond even prior to arrival. She was also there when I arrived and showed me the kitchen, bathroom and the large refrigerator I could use if needed. But the room./cottage had a dorm sized fridge and microwave already. It had little things like hand sanitizer, plastic-ware, disinfecting wipes, a flashlight available. A basket had towels and washcloths ready. She even had a couple of towels on the side that I could use for my dog if needed. Now, be prepared...this cottage is kind of like "glamping". (I did bring my own hair dryer.) I was fully informed so I knew what to expect. The decor was interesting and appealing.

I'm a musician, chef and farmer who loves to meet new people and share my beautiful farm with them. In 2004, we settled at Downing Hollow Farm in Olivehill, TN, located adjacent to my hometown of Savannah, TN. We started a family and watched our children grow up and flourish in this country setting. This is also where my love of gardening evolved into farming. At Downing Hollow, we established two acres of vegetables, flowers, and herbs, 15 acres of pasture, a small pear orchard, and two high tunnel greenhouses. Downing Hollow Farm’s assortment of heirloom and specialty produce, grown using sustainable organic methods, was a fixture at the Memphis farmers markets from 2006 to 2013, and the farm hosted interns from all over the world. I also cofounded the Cooper-Young Farmers Market in 2010, which is still going strong today.
Today, I divide my time between Memphis and Olivehill, TN. In recent years, I established Downing Hollow Farm as a part-time vacation rental for R&R and event space for retreats and workshops. I am also enjoying this second phase of the farm’s life, and it is my great honor and joy to share the beauty and magic of this serene, pastoral setting with visitors who come from far and wide.

Why they chose this property

Some of the happiest times of my life were spent as a kid, trekking through creeks, pastures and woodlands, and riding my pony bareback at a good friend's farm nearby. Those memories have stayed with me all my life, so when we had the opportunity to purchase the Downing Hollow property, I knew this was the place for my family. The property was a bare-bones Mennonite home without electricity, plus it was not finished out both inside and out. So began the long, challenging refurbishment and learning experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

What makes this property unique

Downing Hollow is named after the Downing Family that lived in the hollow back in the 1800s. I've had the honor to host the Downing Family reunion in 2022!
I'm sure they settled here because of the abundant wildlife, limestone creeks, and cool breezes that waft down the hollow. The soil is rich with minerals and the creeks are pure and cold. The Olivehill community grew and once had an old country store/ post office, old stone church and elementary school. Now we are so lucky to have a Mennonite community that live in this area with their church only 1/2 mile down the road. we would never have been able to navigate country living without the ongoing help and sage advice of our Mennonite Neighbors.
