About this property
Statia's best views, comfort, privacy, & nature on a world-class diving island!
An eco-friendly, unique home in the center of beautiful and quaint St Eustatius (fondly called “Statia”), on over one acre on the western slope of the Quill, with views of St. Maarten, St. Barts, the Caribbean and Atlantic oceans. Check us out on Google Earth at 17 degrees 29" 12' North and 62 degrees 58' 23" West. We’re close to everything on this small island.
"Green Turtle Gardens" is a sustainable living space built from shipping containers and re-purposed materials boasting large decks with beautiful, breezy views. All three bedrooms are air conditioned, the shared space “great room” and dining area are open and breezy with ceiling fans. On the lower level, there’s a bedroom with a full bath with shower in a 20 ft container, a covered patio and sink with ceiling fans and overhead lighting, a breezeway, and a well equipped kitchen/pantry in a second 20 ft container. There’s a separate small utility room downstairs with a refrigerator, washing machine, and storage shelving. The upper level includes a large king (or two twins) bedroom (with an ocean view) and large half bath, a smaller bedroom (single twin bed) and small half bath, and a shared outdoor shower. The adjoining “great room” with ceiling and pedestal fans, has great views, lots of windows, and screens for air circulation, a sink, counter for coffee and snacks, storage shelving, and access to a bathroom.
To encourage fun times with your guests, Green Turtle Gardens has a large dining table with lots of seating downstairs on the breezeway patio, and the upstairs has plenty of comfortable seating in the great room and on the decks. And, as a bonus, the sectional seating in the great room converts to a queen bed! There is parking on the lower level and upper level, with access to upper level rooms via a concrete ramp. A roof deck provides a wonderful gathering spot, especially for sunsets, and provides a fabulous 360 degree view of the island, the Atlantic, the Caribbean, and the nearby islands. You might even get to see the “Green Flash”!
Internet service is available for a small fee. There is a wireless router and a smart television.
St Eustatius (Statia) has world-class diving, hiking, botanical gardens, interesting history, great restaurants, and a friendly, inviting local culture. Statia is one of the friendliest locations on the planet.

About the host
Hosted by Tom Hay
I am a scientist, husband, parent, grandparent, scuba diver, and proponent of sustainable living. I like finding creative solutions to challenges. My wife and I live in Virginia and like to travel to see friends and make new ones. I grew up in Albuquerque, went to graduate school in California, and lived in Toronto for 20 years.
Why they chose this property
We spent part of our honeymoon Statia and fell in love with the island, its culture, and its people. I found the perfect piece of land to build a house and spent several years creating a unique vacation spot. Four ocean shipping containers carried recycled materials, furniture, fencing, fixtures, and tools and then became components of the house. We have electricity, water, internet, and air-conditioned bedrooms and catch rain water for the plants, recycle grey water for the banana trees, enjoy the natural breezes, and look out for the endangered Antilles iguanas on the property. Our acre+ includes landscaped areas and wild spaces, and some of the best views on the island, including the "Quill", and both the Atlantic and the Caribbean oceans.
What makes this property unique
Privacy, nature, views, and a unique experience. Located in the center of the small island so it's close to everything.
