The View is a truly Alaskan home on over an acre of woods. The house has an open feel and amazing views of all of Anchorage, Cook Inlet, Fire Island, Sleeping Lady and Denali.
The space
We share The View with others in the summer and live here full time in the other three seasons, so you'll notice the feel of a home. Though we think our kids are pretty great, we've replaced the more personal items (family photos, etc.) with artwork that more people might appreciate. Though The View feels a thousand miles outside of the city, it's within Anchorage and a quick 15 minute drive into the heart of midtown (10 minutes to South Anchorage shopping.) There's an old saying in this state, "the best thing about Anchorage is it's only about 15 minutes from Alaska." Staying in The View gets you the best of both worlds.
Guest access
This listing is for the entire home, with the exception of the garage. There's plenty of parking in the circular driveway and parking area. The driveway is gravel and has a couple tight turns, which contributes to the privacy, but it's a piece of cake for all but the most apprehensive drivers. We drive it all winter long in snow and ice (it's admittedly a little sketchy when covered in ice) but it's no problem during the months The View is available as a rental.
Interaction with guests
Our goal is to provide all the opportunity you need to have a wonderful stay here. In the summer we stay in one of our rental properties just a couple miles away, so we're available if anything unexpected requires our support.
Chris and Janis have been hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing, backpacking, trail running, biking, skiing, mountaineering, boating, backcountry skating, rafting, and rock climbing in Alaska for over 60 years combined. We're more than happy to talk with you about our favorite spots and activities. We also have an extensive guest book which documents our favorite places to recreate around Anchorage, including both mellow kid friendly outings and more extensive backcountry routes. Chris is an avid fisherman and though he won't post his spots on this public forum, he's happy to share with guests all of what he's learned during decades of filling the freezer for winter.
Other things to note
We live in the home from Fall (September) through Spring (May) and own two Golden Retrievers. Though the home is both cleaned thoroughly by us and professionally cleaned, we want to disclose that in case it makes a difference to someone with severe allergies.
The large west facing deck and hot tub are wonderful features of this home and we hope you use them to your heart's content. However, you'll notice that The View is in a relatively quiet neighborhood. Please laugh loudly, let your children scream with joy, and live large while you're here, but we ask that you temper the loud music or 2 AM deck party to help us be good neighbors.
The deck is engineered to maximize the view, including the use of cable railings. While cable railings are tight and to municipal code, a small and very persistent crawler and wiggler might be able to squeeze their way through. We have kiddos on the deck all the time and there's never been a problem, but want to err on the side of providing information in case it's important to someone.
