About this property

A totally authentic Montana sweet retreat in a convenient location

Tucked into the woods at the end of the road just 13 minutes from the heart of town, this cabin is a treasure. Cliff built the place himself; each tree sawn on his tractor-powered sawmill. We added family antiques, new mattresses and original art (lotsa comfort and love). The covered porch is high in the trees with breathtaking views 1000 feet above the Yellowstone River. A stellar location, you will be hard-pressed to find a more memorable authentic cabin experience during your Montana travels.

Cliff was the stuff of legend; a barrel chested mountain man with a heart of gold and a zen-like deep-souled connection to nature. The cabin has power, running water, bath, shower and a full kitchen. The loft has a king size power adjustable bed and the "Powder Room" has a full size bed. Both beds are topped with hand stitched comforters and cozy linens.

The secluded cabin was built onto the side of a mountain above town. You can watch squirrels scamper on the ground outside the bathroom window yet the living room and porch at the front of the cabin sit high off the ground in the trees. Through the tree tops, sky surrounds a view of the Yellowstone River below and the Crazy Mountains beyond. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular from this nest of a home in the trees. The thirty foot porch has a BBQ grill, a dining area and a lounge area complete with a fire pit to cozy around while looking at an endlessly star-filled "Big Sky Country" sky (especially delightful as we do not have the distraction of light pollution). Nights are considerably cooler up here in the forest 1000 feet above Livingston, a welcome respite during the warmer summer months. Cliff's cabin is in it's own neck of the woods, easy to access and private. You will find plenty of forest and a few trails to explore. A big horned owl and its mate have been hanging around Cliff’s cabin - you may hear them hoot at night and in the mornings.
Although we live on the property, you will not see our home. We enjoy people but we do not want to disturb the beauty of quietude which Cliff's cabin offers our guests. Simply let us know the level of interaction you desire. You may check-in on your own. We are accessible by phone and will let you know if we are out-of-town at the time of your booking. You will be able to see my art studio on your way to Cliff's cabin (ask us if you would like a studio tour). We are happy to answer questions and meet your needs. Let us know how we can make your stay dreamier.

Amazing mountain stay

Fiance and I had a blast staying up here in the mountain while fly fishing and visiting Livingston. The cabin looks rustic but has every amenity of an in-town house. Temperature control was excellent. We saw grouse and fox the first day we were here, and watched the tanagers hang around the trees over coffee. Definitely will try to book again!

Amazingly quiet and tranquil

Amber and Raymond have done an incredible job with Cliff’s Cabin. Mountain mornings in the deck with a coffee are unbearable. The decor is gorgeous. One of our all-time favorites!

Rustic and charming. What a gem

We had a lovely time. Cabin is remote yet close to restaurants and shopping. The owners have taken great care to make you feel comfortable. Lofts of nice touches to make you feel at home. Great hosts. Was very clean.

Great time at Cliffs Cabin

Raymond and Amber were excellent hosts. The cabin looked great online, it was even better when we arrived in person. The road to get to the cabin is pretty long and steep, but that added to the seclusion. Cabin was very rustic with all the modern conveniences. Overall it was a great place to stay.

Weekend Getaway and Fly Fishing

Wonderful place with lots of character. The hand craftsmanship was very impressive. This is an authentic mountain cabin. We were there in late fall for fly fishing and enjoyed using the wood stove to heat the place up and carry us through the night. Close to Livingston and close to great fly fishing on the creeks. Will stay here again for our next trip.

Amazing Property !

Unfortunately, we were only able to stay 1 night in this beautiful cabin. I do not have words to describe the unique craftsmanship. The check-in and check-out process was very smooth. We cant wait for a return stay.

A disappointing visit

This is our second stay at this property and this visit was very disappointing in comparison to the first. The main heating element for the cabin continued to turn off because of a load issue. Turns out, you could only have selected electrical appliances on at the same time or the heater would blow the fuse. That's a bad thing when it is cold outside and you need the heater. It rained during our visit which revealed two leaks in the roof. This resulted in the accumulation of water on the floor and countertop in the kitchen. And the road up to the property was a flat out joke. The ruts, the washboarding, the holes, and the caved in areas made the teeth-rattling, back wrenching 2-mile ride up from the main road very unpleasant. I suppose if one had an off-road vehicle with an industrial-strength suspension it would have been tolerable but with a regular SUV it was terrible.

Quiet Mountain Cabin - Great Hosts

We stayed three nights at Cliff's Cabin in mid-July. The location was close to town and located in beautiful Paradise Valley. The cabin had a well-stocked kitchen, which we always appreciate. Amber and Raymond were wonderful hosts and very responsive. There was a small ceiling/roof leak when we arrived on a rainy day. Amber stopped over within a few minutes. Thankfully the rest of the stay was dry. We were able to tour the studio which was a real treat. The kids enjoyed learning some new games they found at the cabin. The resident doe stopped by a few times. A few notes: Although the listing states coin laundry there is no on-premise laundry. As a family on two week road trip we chose purposely chose lodging with laundry in listing. We ended up using a laundromat in town. Being in the mountains you will be surrounded by nature including bugs. We were unable to have the windows open in the evening due to the excessive amount of moths that entered in the cabin even after checking all the screens. Only after all the lights were turned off inside did we feel comfortable opening windows. The provided fans did help keep us comfortable.

Inviting and intriguing with warm art on the walls, surprises in seemingly every nook and cranny, and superbly crafted woodwork and detail throughout the cabin. We only stayed one night but felt the cozy, thoughtful embrace of the cabin every moment of our visit. We enjoyed the quiet solitude.

Real Montana Cabin!

The cabin was just lovely, very authentic with updated utilities. We loved that there was a wood stove and enjoyed a nice fire on the night it was cooler Kitchen was well stocked with everything one would need. The owners provided plenty of drinking water. We are an older couple and one of us has a moderate mobility problem, so it was a challenge to get to the stairs and then up about 8 steps into the cabin. Once inside, if you wanted the larger bed, the stair case to the loft only had a handrail I’m on the right side, leaving the stairs fully open on the left (going up). However, for most folks (except little children) this would not Present a problem. The cabin is on a long gravel road, so going quickly to the market is a bit of time spent. Located close to Livingston downtown (less than 10 miles). This is a wonderful spot for enjoying family, quiet, hiking and the deer! present a problem

Cliff's Cabin & Livingston Rodeo for the 4th!

Cliff's cabin was quaint and the decor was amazing to look at and we all had fun finding all of the little animals. The tour of the studio was a great bonus that we all thoroughly enjoyed. It had a very nice kitchen that had everything we needed to cook meals for ourselves. Additionally, they were not your run-of-the-mill utensils and pans, but were actually of good enough quality to get the job done. It was a super nice stay and it was easy to find and get to from town. We checked in and then went to the Livingston Rodeo, then came back after the fireworks for a good rest. The beds were very comfortable. Our only regret is that we actually didn't get to meet Amber Jean, the famous artist. Maybe next time. We will be back.

About the host

Hosted by Amber and Raymond

Host profile image
We live an enchanted life up here beneath the boundless beauty of Montana’s painterly sky. My daily commute to work is a walk through the woods to my studio. I am an artist. Raymond has a Masters in plants and soil science and has spent the better part of two decades healing the earth via reclamation work. But his work took him far from home too much of the time (we saw each other 17 days one year) so he currently spends his days “talking shop” with local ranchers while keeping them in whatever John Deere equipment they need. Raymond can often be found in a dusty rodeo arena, his black cowboy hat gleaming with fresh bull snot as he protects young bull riders. My own outdoor passions are outside the rodeo arena; ice climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, white water sports to name a few. When we venture outdoors together we tend toward tamer pursuits so that our lovely crazy-smart dog Tala can accompany us (hiking, camping and cross-country skiing). Bhutan has been the focus of our recent travels since I am working on a special project carving for the king. Raymond joined me for a few weeks during my last stint overseas – we have such a BLAST traveling together…!

Both of us love Momma Nature. We enjoy people and all things artistic; music, theater, fine art, books, movies, food, wine, whiskey and dessert.

Why they chose this property

Even locals are blown away by the unique views and total mountain woodsy experience our property offers just four miles from the heart of downtown. Deer, elk, moose, bears, mountain lions, rabbits, game birds and songbirds are part of the experience. Our mountainside retreat protects us from the infamous "Livingston wind" and offers scenic views of the Bridgers, the Crazies and the Absaroka Mountains. You will see the Yellowstone river gleam at sunrise in the valley below (two fishing accesses are only 10 minutes away). Yellowstone Park is a 45 minute drive up Paradise Valley. Bozeman is just 25 minutes aways. Livingston has exceptional dining, wining, bakeries and breweries (we've authored a booklet for you with local suggestions). While the twinkling lights of town can be viewed from many places on our spacious property, Cliff's cabin is tucked into the trees; shady yet plenty of sunlight. Lovely walks and longer hikes are accessible right from your door but of course the river and valley offer limitless adventures. We are outdoor enthusiasts happy to offer advice based on your adventure level and sightseeing preferences.

What makes this property unique

Cliff's cabin is not a "cookie-cutter" cabin. Rather it was built by hand by a local born "zen logger" using a tractor-powered sawmill. We've woven together family antiques, artistic flair and welcoming cozy charm which is why families who stay are keen to return to make more cherished memories in "their" cabin.
