About this property

Downtown Retreat in Restored Historic Cottage with Off-Street Parking

Welcome to your Downtown Private Retreat - now with a 2023 Kitchen Remodel. Since 2017, we have hosted guests in our one-of-a-kind cottage accommodation. The 1930s stucco home is truly centrally located and entirely restored with plenty of character, inside and out.

Explore the riverfront downtown and surrounding hills on foot or set off on day-trips in any direction. Driveway parking is included. Let us know if you want to reserve that for your stay.

There is a comfortable queen bed in a separate bedroom, spacious bathroom with stall shower, and a living room with twin Chinese lounge beds that have 5" high density foam cushions, a dining worktable with 4 chairs, 2 Mid-Century style chairs, and various storage areas. Internet is available, and 27" TV (with Netflix only), central air-conditioning or heating with a thermostat in the hallway (we need to make a switch between the two though). You will find an unusual assortment of antique furnishings from around the world and an amazing meditation room.

The tiny kitchen space is completely upgraded with a refrigerator freezer, 2-burner induction cook-top, deluxe 5-in-1 wall oven, an 18” wide dishwasher, and custom cabinetry. The appliances have important instruction guides ......OR plan your retreat from the kitchen too!

Only steps out the door, there are many surprisingly diverse dining and entertainment options: coffee shops, restaurants, trails, and other local gems. Visit the international award-winning 2022 Public Library of the Year, an excellent resource with spectacular panoramic views. Grocery stores and laundromat are also nearby. University of Montana and St. Patrick Hospital are both within walking distance. Highway access and airport are not far.

Guests have private access and use of the main floor space via the steps or concrete ramp in the photos and plan layout. The entry door keypad code is changed after each guest. And there is an additional privacy lock, once you are in for the evening.

Whether you are here for the first time or a regular to Missoula, please feel free to call on us and we'll do our best to answer your questions and concerns. This could be just the place to stay for a while – rest, work, be inspired, have fun... whatever is on your horizon.

If you do come, PLEASE respect, and take care of this special place while you are here, so that everyone who crosses the threshold can enjoy and appreciate it too.

And visit us at China Woods for more about treasures from Southeast Asia - and Montana. We'd love to chat and hear your stories!

Responsive Hosts, Comfortable Property, Convenient Location
My husband and I like this property so much, we have stayed there multiple times. We ran out of a couple of items during our most recent visit, texted our hosts, and received a response within minutes of our request. There are so many things within walking distance of this enjoyable, clean, and uniquely decorated home. We'll be staying there again!

Unique and comfortable
My husband and I liked it our second stay here even more than the first visit. Communication with the manager/owner is very good. The house is very clean, the bed had a comfortable, new mattress, the interior is spacious, and the location is within walking distance of historic downtown Missoula. There is much attention to the Asian decor and to the landscaping, making the property a beautiful destination. I highly recommend this location.

It's hard to know where to go with this. So I'll just put something down....I am a licensed architect (but not in the state where I live) and an award winning lighting designer. If you have a chance to get to Many Glacier Hotel, you can enjoy the atmosphere in the lodge and see some of my contribution there. That National Park is terrific, and the lodge is also worth visiting, even if you are not staying there. I've also been fascinated by people and the many cultural expressions that we live. There are opportunities even right here in Missoula for many different kinds of music, theater, dance, film, and visiting with local people - those actually from here, and those from elsewhere that have chosen to call this home.

Why they chose this property

Well, after eleven years of being a renter I decided to invest - in this home and in Missoula. It was immediately clear. The house had been vacant for years, and only owned by one family since it was built. The matriarch was in her 90s and had moved to skilled care. Finally the family made the decision to sell. The building was quite sound with original craftsmanship and details, but it was a mess. Nothing had been done for 30 years, and it was filled floor to ceiling with stuff. So with my architecture/lighting design background and love of historic preservation, I set out to update and revitalize everything here, respecting the old and the new, with the work of an incredible construction crew that also gave it their all. The building and its contents have lots of stories - and an excellent vibe.

What makes this property unique

This is a very central location between the heart of downtown and the University with immediate access to trails too. That was certainly part of what drew me here. I like to walk, use public transit, and travel frequently. In fact, I have not owned a car for several years, which is definitely rare in Montana. It's also been a great place, after living in the historic Wilma building, and it has gotten better the longer that I have been here. There are plenty of special features, memories, and character to share. Many of the textile bits are hand-made by me and my buddies too. Quite a few of the fabrics are even hand-made, which adds inherent qualities, and further appreciation of the work that went into creating them. Many people from near and far have made this what it is.....
