What a wonderful opportunity to stay in a historic working windmill! We will never forget this experience! So grateful we found this gem. Everything was perfect!
We only were able to stay for a single evening, but it was an experience we will not forget. The place is beautiful and how often do you get to stay in a windmill? Maarteen is incredibly helpful and was a welcoming host. We are incredibly thankful to have had the opportunity to visit this unique accommodation.
My family and I loved this property! Such a charming town and unique way of experiencing Amsterdam. Peaceful surroundings and the windmill had everything you could need to be comfortable. Maarten was very responsive during our stay, even helping us get a doctor’s appointment in town. We traveled to four countries during our European vacation and our family all agree that this was our favorite part.
I'm not sure I can do this property justice. The charm of this windmill is unmatched by any place I have ever stayed. Every time I walked to another room or opened another door there was something incredibly authentic and interesting to look at. The location of this property is also unmatched. From the goats to the horses, donkeys and cows. It was a countryside wonderland. I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the host. He was beyond accommodating and communicative. If I could give this place 10 stars I would.
My family and I (two tween boys) had a wonderful few days in Abcoude in the windmill. The pictures are true to life so we felt we already knew the place when we arrived. Maarten was wonderful to deal with it was a huge bonus for him to have bikes available for us to use. We went on bike rides into town every day! We would highly recommend the windmill for a few days outside of Amsterdam.

Perfect family vacation with easy access to many sights
Our family of five, 3 adults, a teen and a 12 year old loved our stay in the Windmill. We stayed a week, went into Amsterdam by train 3 days and had a rental car to visit some of the surrounding towns. Its a 25 minute walk to the town of Abcoude or a quick bike ride. Maarten thanks for your hospitality and quick response to any question I had and for running the mill towards the end of our stay. The Netherlands has many amazing sights, but the favorite of my daughters was riding the bikes loaned to us by Maarten around the river and canals right by the mill. On the spur of the moment we drove one day to Hoge Veluwe National Park - about an hour away and rode the bikes provided in the park while another family member went to the Kroller-Muller Museum - we highly recommend this day trip. We commented frequently how happy we were to have rented a place outside of Amsterdam. We hope to visit again - its a special place.

Holidays in a windmill: an experience to remember
When we decided to spend our holidays in The Netherlands we wanted to live in a special place. Why not in a windmill from the late nineteen century?
We went to Abcoude by car from the south of Spain carrying our bikes (two adults and three children). We wanted to live Holland in a quiet way, doing simple things, like riding bikes, walking in the countryside or having a boat trip in the river next to the mill. The mill was the perfect complement to this unique and great experience that no one of us will never forget.
The mill is surrounded by lush pastures, we enjoyed watching the cows and sheeps (they like bread) and pheasants as well as nesting storks across the canal.
Maarten was very nice, helpful, informative and interesting. He also invited us to see the sheeps shaving.
We really enjoyed the space and would highly recommend a stay in the mill, specially for families with children; they always remembered!

Amazing and convenient stay near Amsterdam
First of all, unless you have problems with mobility, just book this place. It is awesome. We have traveled all over Europe and this was a top three experience.
Maarten deserves 7 out of 5 stars. My son and I were completely fascinated by the inner workings of the windmill and Maarten spent at least an hour opening up the inside working parts to the mill and showing us, telling us all about it. He was happy to give us advice on how to get into Amsterdam and nearby places to eat, etc. He met us at the door with a 4 pack of beer, the best host I've ever had. I really admire what he has done restoring this property and letting others like me experience it.
Regarding the windmill. It is not necessarily the cheapest option available but it is certainly competitive in price with other properties that I viewed in Amsterdam. In my view, the experience is absolutely worth every penny. My only caution is that this home is not for those with mobility issues, handicapped persons and I would think twice about having very little kids there as the stairs are very steep and irregular (which was part of the enchantment for us). The owners have refurnished the interior with wonderful results. It is a mix of rustic and modern elegance which is hard to describe but beautiful to see. In my view the pictures online don't do this place justice. Modern conveniences are available (WIFI, TV) but in such a beautiful setting we didn't use very much. It has a small fridge, convection oven with microwave. Kitchen had some basics (oils, spices, etc.. ) The beds and linens were all comfortable and had bednets which my kids thought were canopies for royalty.
The location is about 5 minutes from a quaint town (Abcoude) which had some restaurants and a grocery store. We got to downtown Amsterdam by parking at the train station there (for free) and buying round trip tickets (30 euro for 2 adults, three kids). Train came about twice an hour and took about 20 minutes to get to downtown train station where everything we visited was within walking distance.
I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.
This was an amazing country side windmill experience. Surrounded by river and canals. Cows, goats, and sheep right out the door. Maarten is wonderful. He had everything beautifully ready for us. Even early check in so accommodating. He even started up the windmill for us. He kindly drove us to the train depot. Short bike ride into quaint Abcoude. Super cool little town. Rode to the next town over Driemond. Ate at Tante Bep wonderfully friendly atmosphere. Love the owner. Everyone is so very friendly and kind. Beyond a dream come true and wanderlust of Abcoute. Thank you Maarten. Cheers Patty and Douglas
Gerne wieder!
It was so charming. Kitchen and living space on main floor. 2 bathrooms. Master suite on the third floor. Lots of ladders, so must be able to climb! The countryside was gorgoeus. They were fixing the blade of mill when we were there so we didnt get to see it run. Did not affect our opinion. Charming town, Great bars and food. Maarten was a gracious host. We had everything we needed including bikes to ride to the city.
Highly recommend!! Maartan is a fantastic host and the mill is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The connection with Mondrian was amazing and the whole village was outstanding. Wonderful stay!!
How amazing to stay in a real working windmill! The mill itself is cozy and comfortable inside. Two toilet rooms (one on first floor, one on second) and one bathroom with shower/tub and two sinks. The outdoor space is so lovely- gorgeous view, goats and sheep nearby, beautiful canals. This is the mill Mondrian painted- how special! See one of the paintings in the Rijkmuseum when you visit. Lovely cycle into town. The kitchen doesn’t have space for an oven (which was totally ok, just didn’t plan for it), and we still easily cooked some nice meals. Dishwasher was a plus! Washer dryer combo worked perfectly. Our three boys had so much fun in the outdoor space. We were so lucky to have Maarten’s lovely daughter come show us how the mill works. Robert (who cares for the goats next door) is the kindest person in the Netherlands and let our kiddos help him with the goats one evening. We’ll remember our stay always!
This was a fantastic Dutch experience. Great location to bike and Abcoude was fun to explore. We recommend Ollie's and Acqua Farina. We rented a car so we could visit other areas and go into town for groceries. The train station was very convenient. Staying in a windmill like everyone else mentions...truly a unique experience. Our host was very responsive and easy to communicate with.
This is truly magical experience. Only about 25 minutes from Amsterdam and you are staying in a beautiful windmill in a serene location. Marteen the host was kind and responsive. An experience you have never had. You do need to be comfortable climbing very steep stairs. The goats and sheep are very cute. Great place for a family to chill and reconnect. Five of us fit great. The beds were super comfortable. If you want a unique Dutch experience this is it.
The windmill and Abcoude were absolutely what we were looking for in our stay in the Netherlands. The windmill was 100% as advertised, and I agree with Maarten that you should not over plan your stay because Abcoude and the countryside around the windmill offer so very much to do and explore. We especially liked Anna Haen and Jasmyn (we had amazing meals at both). The people were incredibly friendly, and the town itself was both quaint and welcoming. For a good morning coffee and delicious breakfast don’t forget to go to Ollies the American pancakes were especially delicious (served with real maple syrup!).
I can’t say enough, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would absolutely come back!
If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a windmill surrounded by farm fields with sheep/goats/cows and more this is the place!
Close to a wonderful town with great pre made food from gourmet type shops and restaurants, so eat out or bring food back and watch sunset at the windmill at the outdoor table as we did.
Thatched roof, well appointed and cozy inside - we will hopefully be back!
The Windmill was a fantastic and unique stay. After a few days in Paris our family loved coming to the calmness of the wide open country and the windmill was a very cool experience. Maarten was always available to answer any questions and kept a phenomenal house.
