Maggie,
We are so sorry to hear that! However, the welcome email sent 14 days prior lists a secondary code to use if your first code does not take. Thank you for visiting, and we hope you enjoyed Oak Island as much as we do!
This property has a lot of potential but was overall very disappointing for us. When we arrived, the A/C was broken and the house was filthy. We called the property management company (Oak Island Accommodations) and they did eventually send a technician to fix the air conditioning but it wasn't resolved until almost 10pm that night. This was especially frustrating because the house was 87 degrees and there was so much dust and hair on the ceiling fans that we had to clean them ourselves before we could turn them on. Based on the amount of build-up on the fans, there was no way they they could have been cleaned in well over a year. In addition to this, the ice maker in the refrigerator was broken, as was the dishwasher. There was a paper plate on the counter with a note saying "This is the piece that broke off the dishwasher" with multiple pieces of the dishwasher on it, seemingly from whoever had stayed there before. When we mentioned to the property management company that we didn't feel that the house had been cleaned (especially given their advertisement of Covid "deep cleaning" and the cleaning fee that we were charged), they asked us whether there was a paper strip across the toilet, making me concerned that that's the only thing that actually gets cleaned between tenants. While they did address the AC issue, none of our other issues were ever followed-up on and we were never offered any additional cleaning of the house, refund of our cleaning fee, or any other attempt at a solution to the issues we brought to their attention. It is a shame because the house is in a good location and could be nice if taken better care of, but we will never stay here again or book a property through Oak Island Accommodations. Until some of the issues are addressed with this house, I would highly discourage anyone else from staying here as well.

Dear Jen,
We are so sorry to hear about the inconvenience you experienced! On behalf of the owners and our organization, we would like to sincerely apologize. According to our records, when our maintenance tech could not find the problem with the AC unit, we sent an outside vendor to ensure you had a working cooling system and were so happy to hear that it was fixed within the same day. We asked about the paper strip across the toilet because that is the easiest thing to spot once our properties are cleaned, as every maid service places one after disinfecting the home. We apologize that the home did not live up to your cleaning standards before your stay, but were glad to give compensation afterward. There are now all new appliances in the property and all the issues mentioned above have been addressed. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we hope you will come back to Oak Island and give our wonderful community another chance!
