The district
The Kasbah of Marrakech served as an architectural model for the Moroccan imperial cities.
A few decades after the destruction of palaces and mosques caused by their tribe taking Marrakech, the Almoravid sovereign Youssef Ben Tachfine undertook in the 12th century the construction of the Kasbah whose construction will be completed during the reign of his successor Yacoub El-Mansour.
The Kasbah of Marrakech was the first and the model of the Moroccan imperial city. The urban planning choice of its creators was to group the main objectives of the city into districts. The military districts were thus regrouped in the north of the Kasbah, the administrative city occupied the south while the palaces and gardens were built in the east. The urban plan of the Kasbah of Marrakech inspired other architects and sovereigns, it served in particular as the basis for the construction of another imperial city: Fez.
Over the centuries, the Kasbah was almost completely destroyed. Its materials were used for the construction of Fez and the palace of El Baldi, its ruins served as building land for the construction of Alawite palaces. All that remains of the Kasbah is the minaret of the Yacoub el Mansour mosque (in photo) and its name given to a district of the old town as well as the famous Saadian Tombs
