Charming, historic riverfront lodge on 7 wooded acres with 6 bedrooms

The Dan de Lion Lodge is a charming, historic home, built in 1918, as a "speak easy" during Mobile's prohibition era. Later it was converted to a home and added on to for family fleeing Nazis during World War II. Newly renovated, it is perfect for family gatherings, retreats, grilling, boating, fishing and relaxing sunsets on the wharf.
Nestled among 7 acres of Live Oaks and Palmettos on the banks of beautiful Dog River, this house is only 15 minutes from Downtown Mobile; a city famous for being the birthplace of Mardi Gras, delicious Gulf seafood and several antebellum homes in its 600 blocks of historic districts.
World famous Bellingrath Gardens is 30 minutes to the south and the beautiful white sand beaches of Dauphin Island are 45 minutes away.

Nice home but quirky and kind of old fashioned. I’m sure lots of people love homes like this because it’s very unique but I thought it was just ok. The dock and access to the river was amazing. Worker out well for a few guys in town for work but I probably wouldn’t stay here with my family. Again, ok but not great.

Cool Property on the Water

This was a great place for a big group of friends to stay at for a long weekend. Right on the water which we really enjoyed and it was private with plenty of parking for our large group. Host was prompt and kind. Thanks!

What a gorgeous spot to hang out! Charming, historic home, quiet, water-side setting. I think we’ll be coming back next year—next time we’ll allocate less time on the golf course and more time here.

My husband and I had our elderly Mom's (89 and 91) with us. We spent 4 nights. We spent half that preparing for Hurricane Francine which just added to our adventures! Thank you so much for making your home available. We enjoyed it so much ❤️ The home was so fun

A marvelous waterfront location!

Our family had a marvelous time staying in this large, waterfront, home. This is a lovely, renovated, Dog River home with a great layout for a large number of guests staying under one roof. It also offers a great pier & kayaks, etc. for guests interested in water sports.

Hidden gem in heart of mobile!

This is our second stay at the dandelion! Great property with the best history. I wish there was a book of stories this house has seen! Ask about the picked flowers from the property in the bedrooms. 🌸The house is old and should be treated with respect and not ever seen as a flaw but as the great character it has earned!

Theatre Competition Comes to Mobile

Our purpose in Mobile was the Southeastern Theater Conference. Having a house in a beautiful setting allowed us easy access to downtown Mobile but a nice retreat for everyone to gather. The size of the property allowed all of us to be together or not. Some liked the tranquility of the dock, others used the front porch to run lines for the show. The big round table in the dining room had plenty of room for all of us to talk, have a meal or play a game. Great property!

Wow...just Wow!!!

Dande Lion Lodge was the perfect place for 2 "old" friends to get away from the frantic year that we have both had. The house is delightful. We loved everything about it. The grounds are beautiful and the swing on the wharf was just the best. We sat and had cocktails and watched the sunset every afternoon. The property is close to town but very secluded. It would be great for a family gathering. We will be back!!!

Magnificent

What a gem. Quaint, charming home with tons of history, very tastefully furnished with ample space for everyone. Home promoted visiting and family time, perfect for extended families. But it was the property that makes it - on the water, wonderful dock, live oaks, fire pit, multiple sitting areas where families can gather for coffee, games, conversations, and hanging out. The dock was our favorite spot - the view and the fresh, brisk breezes off the Dog River were simply amazing. Lovely, lovely home. Thank you, Maubry and crew, wonderful stay.

Sweet Family Time

We spent july 4th weekend at the Dan de lion. The beds were very comfortable. There was plenty of space. Our son brought his boat and the kids had a blast. The swing on the pier was wonderful. The only concern of house was it was unlevel in places. Not a problem for most of us but we had someone prone to vertigo. ( not a problem with medication) My favorite place was sitting at dining table in kitchen for morning coffee. It took me back to Grandmas house. The river was beautiful and fireworks were wonderful all around. The history was thought provoking and You had to imagine all the days gone by and who sat at that table. We highly recommend.

Beautiful property, true family home!

Can’t say enough great things about the Dan de Lion Lodge! Well stocked, spacious and full of treasures the lodge was a true blessing for our whole family to enjoy. Upon arriving you drive down the long shaded drive to the home (3 laps around to street and back from house is a mile 😉) you see the spectacular acreage and privacy the lodge offers. The house itself is shaped like backwards L - the front part has utility room, kitchen, dining, one bathroom off dining and then a huge room with two twins you can walk through to access master (king) and master bath or you can shut and lock that door and then master and master bath becomes like a separate suite and has its own entrance from the front patio. Actually from front of house you have doors to master, dining room and utility room. On the west side of the house there is a patio and door out to the large side yard from the living room. Then running south from that living room (this is the top long part of the L) you have another long living room with 4 bedrooms off of it and one full bathroom. You’ve got two rooms on the right with doubles and tons of windows (back room has door out to back patio) and on the left the two rooms have two twins each (first has daybed and trundle, second has two separate twins). The house is well stocked and had lovely touches like games (they had the croquet set from the 60s I played with as a kid in the 80s), puzzle, TONS of great books and antiques and treasures. You feel like you are staying at your grandmothers beautifully renovated farmhouse! Our girls caught lightning bugs every night and husband fished off the dock every morning. Family took advantage of the two kayaks and enjoyed the bay (wear a swimsuit!) and little beach and the owners were beyond responsive! The grandparents in our group were ambivalent about the rental when we booked just wanting to see family but upon leaving said they would really miss the property. Venetia Road itself is not busy and we took daily jogs/walks around the area. Neighbors so friendly - I’m ready to move there! We had plenty of room to work/school from home and they had extra tables and chairs all over the home which made things very easy for our group of 8. The house could easily host 12 in beds and plenty of room to spare! It has a 100+ year history so you will have doors that don’t lock or are sticky and will hear the birds outside but that’s part of the charm! Would buy it if they’d sell it!

Words cannot describe this place! Be prepared to stock up on food as you will not want to leave, the dock, the porches, the wildlife, the beds everything was perfect and wished we could have stayed longer. Marbury was an excellent host with clear communication and the place is better than described, the photos do not do it justice and would highly recommend.
