About this property
Stunning Waterfront Hideaway on Michener's Choptank River. Special Rates*
Modern 2 BR, 2 BA River House has 180-degree views of glorious sunsets
Imagine two floors of picture windows overlooking a spacious deck, and heated pool, all gazing out at one of the most historic and scenic rivers in the country. The Choptank River first navigated by European colonists in 1612 and immortalized in James Michener's novel, Chesapeake, 350 years later, beckons River House guests to walk its woods, kayak or boat its shores, and explore its historic and tranquil surroundings. This is the heart of Maryland's Eastern Shore, renowned worldwide for its crab and oysters, yet situation in the middle of just about everything without drawing attention to itself. This is Pinch Me country.
The Eastern Shore is a large, flat peninsula occupied by three states between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay--which is really an ancient estuary. There are no metropolises, no limited-access highways, no scheduled commercial airports. Less than 30 feet above sea level in most spots, it is etched by countless meandering tributaries, none 100 miles long, yet more than a couple of them--including the Choptank--2 to 4 miles wide when they reach the Bay. Weaving like blood vessels in a retina, the graceful paths of the rivers, and the marshes and grasslands they define, are reminiscent of the plains of Africa and South America. There is nothing like it in the Western Hemisphere above the equator.
One hour east of River House are the Atlantic beaches of Rehoboth and Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. An hour west puts you in the nation's capital, with Annapolis in between. Less than 90 minutes southeast is Assateague Island, famous for its beach camping, off-loading, and wild horses. Half an hour due south of River House are the superb dining and shopping of Easton and, a little further, St. Michael's and Oxford. Within easy reach north are churches with gravestones from the 1600's near Ruthsburg, the nation's first chartered college in Chestertown, and the largest weekly antique auction in the works, in Crumpton. Or head just three miles down the road to Denton and begin retracing the Underground Railroad and visit the birth places of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. both natives of the Choptank's shores.
River House offers a master bedroom with a king bed and ensuite. There is a quiet guest room on the first floor with a queen bed, a couple of steps from the second full bathroom. Additional guests could be accommodated with a queen air mattress. A wash and drier are down the hall in the laundry room. The living room provides Direct TV on a large screen next to the gas fireplace. There is a shared dock for boat access, kayaking and fishing.
This house has been a successful rental for the past 4 years and as new owners we are looking forward to providing the same quality vacation experience.
Here are some quotes from past visitors.
"Beautifully maintained home with stunning views" This is our second stay here and this one was as ideal as the first. It's the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. From the pool to the hot tub to kayaking on the river, we really didn't need to leave the property!
"Very peaceful, private, and yet close to everything. The property is beautiful! "
"Peaceful and Relaxing" This beautiful place on the river was just what we were looking for. A quiet, private getaway. The home is lovely, with pretty much everything we could need, including a grill for cooking out. We love the ocean as well, and being only an hour or so away from the coast we could spend a little time there, and then come back to our peaceful spot.
"Fantastic Stay at Choptank River House" Our family spent an absolutely fantastic week at Choptank River House in late July/early August. We were looking to get away from the heat and crowds of NYC in summer with our 14-month-old and 2 dogs, and the River House could not have been more perfect. The house itself is stunning -- beautifully appointed, filled with natural light and very-well maintained, and we arrived close to midnight to find that the fridge had been stocked with an awesome array of local produce. The house is removed enough to feel like a hideaway but also just a short drive from town, and we were able to make fun day trips to nearby Saint Michael's and the Dogfish Head brewery in Delaware, although with the fantastic views of the river, our own large swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, we sometimes found it hard to motivate ourselves to leave the property.
"A lovely getaway, yet all within a 45-minute drive: Easton, Kent Narrows, St. Michaels." Property was well-maintained; the pool was great, although we had some rain, we still enjoyed a couple beautiful pool days in the sun. Our welcome basket of fresh flowers, fruit and veggies were an elegant and very tasty treat: wonderful tomatoes, a variety of lettuce, delicious strawberries and more! We had a wonderful vacation

It is beautiful. All facilities including hot tub were great. Quiet and off the beaten path. Hosts are near and very helpful with all questions. Views on river wonderful from the house or dock.
We had a wonderful vacation. Chris and Alison were great to work with, gave us wonderful recommendations for restaurants and shops. This house was a great place to just take a deep breath and relax with family.
The house was very comfortable, the hot tub was so relaxing. We got to use the kayaks on the river. Allison and Chris were great hosts. It was a great stay.
If you love being on the river, this is kind of perfect. Remote enough to feel like you are away from the world, but close enough to be practical. We had a great time.
Beautiful home and wooded lot, just steps from the Choptank River. The owners are friendly & check to make sure you have everything you need to be comfortable. We arrived very late the first night and they left us coffee and cream in the fridge for the next morning. This property is very private, yet close to all shopping and dining. Crystal clean in-ground pool, dock with chairs, firepit, fishing poles, grill, kayaks. We will be back!
This house provided the quiet country retreat we needed. Hiking trails with the kids and dogs, fishing off the pier, canoeing on the river and hot tub to relax. We will be back again!

Thank you. Some Easter eggs were left hidden in the yard. I enjoyed the candy. Lol
After a long year at home, we just wanted to get away and see some new sights, even though we still had to do school and work. We had a lovely time here. The house was incredibly comfortable, the kitchen well-stocked, and the pool delightful. We were able to bring our dog, too, and he also settled in beautifully.

We were so happy you got away and were able to swim in the 75 degree pool despite the cold air temperatures.
Beautiful, private property for relaxing in nature
We had a great stay at this beautiful property. We really appreciated the large fenced in yard for our dogs, and the owner communicating to let us know where some small gaps under the fence were and offering to help block them (we have a very small dog who could have wiggled under- bigger dogs would be fine.) The king bed was so comfortable, and the hot tub and pool were delightful. We hope to return!
Big, airy house on a secluded, peaceful lot along the banks of the historic Choptank River. Pool was ultra-clean at a perfect temperature. Short drive to all of the cool eastern shore Chesapeake towns. The hosts were hospitable, responsive, and they respected our privacy. We’d surely return to this unique property!

Glad you appreciated and loved this special place.
This house is so nice! The outdoor setting is beautiful- river views, wooded and serene. There was a pool , hot tub and a dock ( which was perfect for sunset views, kayaking and fishing). Everyone in our group caught a fish. The yard was gated if you bring your dog. I miss it already.
Yes SPECTACULAR....everything about the house, the property and Alison and Chris! The home was clean and beautiful and so WELL STOCKED with everything you could need for a fantastic stay!! WE WILL RETURN!! Thank you soooooo much Alison and Chris! We will talk soon!!

We love hosting as we meet some amazing people. We certainly look forward to your return.
All the best . Alison and Chris
Alison and Chris' beautiful place on the Choptank River provided the perfect setting for a wonderful long weekend away from the city. House is beautiful, very comfortable, and far enough off the to block most sounds other than those of the geese and other forest/river inhabitants. We lounged in the hot tub, explored the farm, and enjoyed some of the history of the area - the old wharfs, Underground Railroad, and antique shops. Will definitely look forward to coming back during warmer temperatures to enjoy kayaking and other river activities.

My husband and I wanted a quick, quiet getaway and this sure was the place to go! Surrounded by water and woods your feel at one with nature, and and added benefit was looking at the stars from the hot tub on the deck! The house is beautiful and fully stocked with everything we needed to make a nice meal for ourselves. The hosts were fabulous and in contact with us constantly from check in to check out! It has a pool and a beautiful deck that you can sit on and enjoy the peaceful sound of the water, I would absolutely book again and urge anyone who wants a quiet getaway to consider this property!!!! You won’t regret it!!!
The check in process was very easy and the owners were very responsive and checked in via text several times throughout the week. The house itself was perfect for three of us and our dog. The large fenced yard was perfect for having a dog with us. The house well stocked and had everything we needed. The week we stayed was extremely hot with temps in the mid to high 90’s and humid but the pool was so refreshing on those hot afternoons. The property itself was very isolated and quiet which was perfect for us. There is a Walmart and Food Lion about 15 minutes away and a connivence store about 10. The fishing off the dock was the best week of fishing we ever had. Caught so many Blue Cats all week long the biggest being about 8 1/2lbs. We are really hoping for an opportunity to come back next year.
We had a very relaxing time on our 2 week stay. Even though Alison & Chris were traveling they saw to getting any issues solved.
the pool was great & the fenced in yard was great for our 85 lb lab but we had to reinforce some low areas for our son’s 17 lb skinny crazy dog that like to find ways out. All turned out find.
The kitchen was great and we made wonderful meals and used the grill as well.
there were great farm stands very close by and we ate in Denton a couple of times at Caroline’s it was very good.
Went over to the ocean 45 mins on Delaware’s side and went to Lewes where you can catch the ferry to Cape May in NJ but we didn’t do that, maybe next time. Such a great place to stay.
We had a wonderful time in this beautiful home. We were welcomed by the owners who helped make our vacation a memorable one. Allison was always happy to give us ideas for day trips. She brought her llamas down to visit my grandson and also let him help her feed them before we left. He's told everyone who'll listen about his wonderful vacation. It was great having the pool. We used it every day and used the hot tub every night.
The kayaks were right there at the private dock to use and we could fish off the dock as well.
I would highly recommend this rental. From the wonderful owners to the beautiful home, this place is a gem. We all had such a great time. Thank you!!!

I am so glad the llamas were a hit and it was wonderful to hear you had such a great time! We would love to have you come back.
Alison and Chris were very generous hosts. We were originally scheduled to stay during the weekend in June in which the sky was smoky and outdoor alerts had been issued. They kindly allowed us to switch to August and we just returned from a perfect weekend. This property is beautiful and well-equipped for a fun time. We focused on the needs of our 1 year old grandson. It was his first introduction to a real swimming pool and he loved it! The pool is just beautiful. We also found that we had an empty gas tank for the grill. Chris immediately ran out and brought a new one so that we could enjoy our cookout. I highly recommend this beautiful property!

About the host
Hosted by Alison and Chris Vooris
Chris and Alison After ten years in Fells Point Baltimore it was time to get out of the city. In 1989 Chris and I moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, first living in the historic town of Centreville and then moving to Moot Point Farm
We have raised four children in this rural area and feel fortunate to have given them this opportunity; a care-free up-bringing of farms, fields , rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. This is a place to escape and be one with nature. The sunsets across the river are spectacular and the seasons each bring their own magic. In the summer we spend most of our time in or on the water. Kayaking the river ,where ospreys abound, you feel like you are in untouched Indian territory.
Why they chose this property
This has been a successful VRBO property for he last 4 years and we live directly next door. Moot Point is a unique place on the Choptank River. A waterfront property untouched by any development. The abundance of bird species and the beauty of the river, the sunsets and the quiet isolated environment was the attraction. We have not left this place and now we are fortunate to be able to share this one of a kind place to guests. We invite you to experience the invigorating magic of Moot Point, on the river, on this amazing Eastern Shore.
What makes this property unique
When you wake up in the king-sized bed of the master bedroom, and before your feet hit your slippers, you will look straight out the wall of picture windows to the river. Roll over to the right or left and you will see the woods fully decked out in seasonal fare, as dawn spills down from the skylight. Take in the unique personality of each of the four seasons from this perch, or from the balcony, living room, kitchen, or dining table. Or from the deck, with its glass railings and unobstructed views. The brilliant, crisp foliage of fall, the hushed peace of winter, the exuberant eruption of spring, and the sultry lushness of summer, all become closer, more intimate at the River House. There is no "in-season" here. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, even the doldrums of February, are all exquisitely serene times.
Into birding? This is one of the richest avian habitats in North America. On the river slightly to the left of the house is a nest that is inhabited by osprey who return the first of every March to start a new generation. On the far bank are blue herons. Down river nearby are bald eagles, who, though much larger, tread carefully when encroaching on osprey turf. In the woods surrounding the house there is a cardinal couple, loyal to each other and to our home the year 'round. Not to mention red-tailed hawks, turkey buzzards, nuthatches, tufted titmouse, chickadees, and three species of woodpeckers. We'll leave our birding guide and binoculars for you.
Love the water? Kayaking or boating? We'll keep two kayaks for your use, with paddles, ready for you at the front of the deck. There is a shared dock available which can be where you drop the kayaks in, jump into the river and swim or moor a boat. Boats can be launched in Denton at the local landing and trailers can be stored at Moot Point.
Enjoy swimming pools? when it's warm, lounge on the pavers next to the pool and read the day away.
