About this property

C'mon out to the Lazy Trout!!!

For an authentic Montana experience, consider the Lazy Trout! It's a cozy, comfortable little house which sits on one acre about 7 miles out of Lolo, Montana. Lolo Creek runs through the middle of the property, which is just a few feet out the back door. It provides a great view, memorable moments and quality entertainment

The house is furnished nicely and well stocked with plenty of kitchen utensils and pots and pans. The living room has a nice view of the water and a big screen tv with Dish Satelite, dvd/cd player, amp and speakers. There is a comfy king bed in the master overlooking the creek and a nice queen log bed in the 2nd bedroom.

Being 7 miles into the mountains from Lolo, there is limited cell service, but internet is available. Traveler’s Rest Country store or Roper’s Bar & Casino is just 3 minutes down the road should you need any solid cell and WiFi along with convenient store items.

Downstream ten minutes away is the Lolo Steakhouse, Lolo Creek Distillery, Lolo Brewery and Traveler’s Rest State Park and Interpretive Center, where Lewis & Clark camped out. Or journey up south to see what all Stevi, Hamilton and the Bitterroot River have to offer. The Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers are close and Rock Creek, the world famous blue ribbon trout stream is only 20 miles east down I90 from Missoula.

The fishing here and around Missoula is very good in season (the 3rd Saturday in May thru Nov 30) for native cuts, rainbows, brookies and brown trout. Spring and fall are prime. On and near the property are nice stretches of water to fish, up and downstream. There is a nice spot which eddies out back of the house, perfect fishing for all ages. If the fish aren’t biting, it works great as a swimming hole to cool off in, or just sit around the fire pit and Lazy Trout Bar & Grill and listen to the creek go by.

Upstream is another world famous (Lumber)Jack Saloon, just 12 minutes away into the mountains, or enjoy a horseback trail ride or a soak at Lolo Hot springs- less than a half hour up the road. There’s also two other natural hot springs nearby-Jerry Johnson and Wier. Google them, they’re extraordinary. Just over the pass, the Lochsa River offers salmon and steelhead fishing and serious whitewater rafting.

This area is not only fishes, but hunt’s very well. Plenty of big game, turkeys, grouse and then some. We’re also close to major snowmobile trails and cross country ski areas, and there are plenty of logging roads and trailheads for hiking and biking.

So c’mon out to the Lazy Trout! A great place to relax with friends or family, or use as a base camp for further exploration of the Missoula, The Lewis and Clark Trail, or the Bitterroot-Selway Wilderness.

We are in a great location for all seasons with convenient highway access, and just 14 miles from Missoula. Southern exposure means plenty of sun, with room for campers and a small trailer or two. Events considered.

The house was just as imagined. We were worried about it being really close to the road but the sound of the river seemed to drown out any road noise. It was the best location for us. We had zero cell service (but was able to connect to the WiFi), which was an absolute God send. It seems our phones are constantly going off so the quiet was much needed! The fire pit, the weather, the changing of the trees….the perfect get away for us! Thank you for sharing your little slice of Heaven!

Wonderful Stay

Right on the creek-what more can you ask for? The deck was a perfect place to sit and read or to just watch and listen to the water. Well-supplied kitchen and comfortable beds.

Lazy Trout

The Lazy Trout was a perfect getaway for our family. It's clean, cozy, and comfortable indoors and the scenery is beautiful outdoors. There's plenty to do if you like the outdoors like your own personal zip line which crosses Lolo creek or grilling hot dogs on the deck. Fishing, floating or just watching for wildlife from the outdoor bar creekside. We hope to be visiting the Lazy Trout for years to come.

Rick’s place was wonderful, and he was a fantastic host. He talked fishing with the husband, accommodated our last-minute booking, and was available for questions. His house had a great yard, and it was wonderful falling asleep to the sound of the river every night. Everything was clean, and I loved the outdoorsy decor, comfy blankets, comfortable furniture, and patio. Great place to unwind!

The perfect sledding base camp

We stayed during our snowmobile trip to Lolo Pass, the house is close to the mountain and trails. We had 5 riders and the setup was perfect with plenty of trailer parking. The owner was also very accommodating with our schedule, thank you we will definitely be back

Outstanding Property

The Lazy Trout is amazing. Nestled right up next to LoLo Creek, it is spacious, clean, and comfortable. The owners live next door so if you need anything they are very easy to contact. We found Rick & Gina to be very personable and accomodating. They even took us up the road to the Jack Bar & Grill, a famous local hangout. The dinner there was excellent. All-in-all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Lazy Trout and will return next year.

Better than hoped for

This place exceeded our expectations in so many ways. The river was much closer to the house and back deck than we hoped which was nice for those evenings when we wanted to sit in the house with the patio door open and listen to the sound of the water rush by. The house was super clean, nicely decorated, and well stocked with towels, blankets, kitchen accessories, movies, board games, and music. The beds are very comfortable. The washer and dryer worked well. The patio, fire pit, and outside bar were fun and relaxing. Rick, the owner, is very nice and available for anything you might need, This is a great place and one we will undoubtedly be visiting again.

Montana Magic!!

This place is an absolute gem. We arrived after dark and with prior communication, we checked in. Dinner was a short walk away at the roadside diner GRAZE. Great people and food I might add. Waking up and seeing the property for the first time was nothing short of amazing. Rick visited and gave us suggestions for places to visit nearby. It was a trip that was too short but really fun. We fished and caught some great looking brown trout just down the river from our location. So many things to do and not every one accomplished so a return trip is a must. Looking forward to Rick and Gina's place to visit again soon! Overall, we'd highly recommend this place. 5 stars and more.

Cozy cabin in bucolic creek side location

The cabin is meticulously maintained—all the appliances and electronics (TV with Dish Hopper DVR) worked perfectly. The hot water is instantly available and hot, which is a very welcome thing to come home to after a long day in the the Bitterroot Range exploring endless trails and fishing in the crystal clear waters of Lolo Creek, or maybe the Lochsa River that runs over a 100 mile stretch between Lolo Hot Springs and Kooskia, Idaho, a path followed by Lewis & Clark on their expedition at the turn of the 19th century. Back to the property: plenty of space to maneuver and park vehicles and trailers on the owner’s tract of land right next to the cabin; friendly and helpful owner close to the cabin; two comfortable bedrooms with large beds; full kitchen with large fridge and a dishwasher; and a stable and faster-than-expected internet connection (I was consistently getting ~80-100 Mbps down from the Starlink satellite network). NB: wildfire(s?) have scorched large swaths of hillside along both sides of highway 12 (the road to the cabin from Lolo) as you head west from Lolo up to the hot springs; the forest is starting to come back in spots, but the remnants of the fire are impossible to ignore along a ~10-mile stretch of the highway that runs right past the cabin, but you’d never know as you are enjoying the sights and sounds of the creek running right out the back door on the porch. All in all, great place to spend a few days or more, and I would go back any time.
