A little help needed
We loved nearly everything about this property - we rented the whole thing and loved the feeling of the place, the location central to so much outdoors, and the history of the place. Easy to get from building to building, and Janet was super-responsive. The problem was in cleanliness. To her credit, Janet is likely doing everything possible and was immediately responsive to issues with mice. However, mouse droppings coated furniture, were in beds (so was a mouse, alive, to surprise a kid at night), and droppings were throughout the kitchen. Everything in the kitchen was dirty - food was stuck to pans and dishes, mouse droppings were on dishes, shelves and cupboards were not usable due to mice issues, food had been left by whomever stayed prior, and the fridge was covered in broken eggs and food crumbs, probably directly contributing to the issue. As this was our kitchen and you have to use it that far out from town, that was a bit of a deal-breaker. It just needed cleaning before we came in. We get it that mice are a never-ending part of living out on the ranch, but this was too far beyond "rustic." 27 degrees at night and lighters didn't work or wood didn't fit in stove, so had to run a box of matches across four buildings. That one is just part of being out there, but space heaters might be needed when it gets that low. All that said, this is a unique property and a really cool experience - it may just be too much with these cleanliness issues on top of everything for many. We did really appreciate Janet's support - she is doing everything it seems herself and these are a lot of spaces.

Thank You Janet!
Janet provided us with the best detailed instructions to reach her property. She is, by far, the best host I have experienced. Her property, 3 cabins, are very beautiful and seemingly one of the oldest (1920s). The place is suitable for small to large occupancy, the washrooms are very homely, the cooking/kitchen is very spacious, Janet's house is very beautiful and she has amazingly friendly pets. The property has a very scenic surrounding. Janet knows the places around very well and I myself seeked her advice on my travel itenary to visit Needles, a part of Canyonlands national park. I will definitely plan my visit again to Janet's place with my friends.

About the host

I retired seven years ago and am a quiet person. Happy to chat if you like, or leave you alone. I founded and was Executive Director of Four Corners School of Outdoor Education 32 years, now called the Canyon Country Discovery Center, a place-based interactive science center, located just north of Monticello on Hwy 191. Worth a visit if you have time!

Why they chose this property

The property is surrounded by farm fields and a few remote homes. The neighbors like their privacy, so if you go for walks nearby please stay on the main gravel road. The views from this high point are vast and spectacular of the entire Four Corners area and Bears Ears. Lots of parking.

I live on the property if you have questions or need anything. I may not be there all the time but you will get my cell phone when you arrive if you have questions. There are a dog and cat that live on the property, so sorry but guests may not bring pets. Two Great Pyrenees neighbor dogs occasionally show up as well who are very friendly.

This property is accessed from a paved road, 19.5 miles from Monticello, with the last mile being a good gravel road. It is a remote location, but does have wifi. Cell phones work best here if you enable wifi calling on your phone. There is a land line phone in the owners house for emergencies.
