About this property

Amazing artistic home, hot tub, dreamy views! July 28-Aug 6th available now!!

Come enjoy the amazing views of the continental divide and Indian Peaks Wilderness in this one of a kind home! Located just 7 miles from the town of Nederland, 15 minutes from Eldora mountain Resort, 1 hr from Denver, and 35 minutes to Boulder, the house makes you feel like you are way off the beaten path, yet still accessible to so many great restaurants a small towns. The Casita is more than just a vacation rental, it's a piece of art! Carefully crafted with almost all reclaimed materials, this house will truly make you feel at home. There are Breathtaking views of Arapahoe peaks, jetted tub, hot tub, outdoor steel fire pit, gas grill, shower in the master with views of the divide and hammocks!!. The house was initially designed to be a vacation rental and it has a personality unlike any other. It is certainly a one of a kind home! 4 Wheel Drive or AWD is mandatory in the winter and recommended, in general, however, not mandatory in the summer.
The Casita is a modern construction that we have been building since 2012. The house is primarily made up of reclaimed materials with the exception of some of the framing lumber. All of the windows, doors, flooring, cabinets, counters, granite, flagstone, outdoor kitchen, and even all of the appliances came from other resources. We take pride in making luxury out of re-used building materials!
After building our bed and breakfast, Casa Colorado over the last ten years and using reclaimed materials, we thought it would be fun to build another house that could be a vacation rental and would act as an example of a reclaimed design and build project, start to finish. After discovering Resource in Boulder and a few other used building suppliers, I was able to stockpile all of the house parts before we started building. I designed this house by using the pieces that I found, but also prioritizing the artistic integrity, functionality, and overall class of the home.
The house sleeps up 6-8 people, but is probably the most comfortable with 4-6. There is a king in the master bedroom, as well as a day bed with a trundle and a queen futon in the loft attached to the master but separated by French doors. There is a queen in the downstairs bedroom. We have added a 3rd bedroom in a seperate tiny house behind the outdoor kitchen. There are also 4 blow up mattresses and two pack n’ plays for kids.
The Casita Kitchen is built with an open floor plan and features a stained torquoise concrete slab with in floor radiant heat, a beautiful Viking range with a center griddle and a stainless dishwasher and refrigerator. There is also a professional grade blender, coffee maker, French press, espresso machine, 4 slice stainless toaster, and a soda stream for making your own bubbly water. There are professional grade copper pots and pans, as well as stainless for your cooking pleasure. There is a crockpot and a Champion juicer, as well. The kitchen is fully stocked with a full line of savory herbs and spices and a few varieties of sea salts and also fresh organic herbs growing for your convenience (during the grow season).
The lighting in the Casita is really amazing. There are remote controlled full spectrum leds, moroccon sconces up the stairwell, deep blue pendants over the island, and rail and cable lighting throughout the house. Every light in the house has a dimmer. The ability to create a really cool feeling in this house is one of its signature characteristics!
The living room is very quaint and has an 8 ft. cozy designer couch, as well as two comfy chairs. There is a pellet stove that does a great job of heating the space and provides a really warm atmosphere during the winter months. There is also in floor radiant heat in the kitchen and the two bathrooms and radiant wall mount heat in the rest of the house.
There are flatscreen tvs with direct tv in each bedroom and a 55 inch in the living room. There is a Harmon Kardon surround sound stereo system in the living room and speakers throughout the entire house for your listening pleasure. The stereo also has a tablet that you can stream spotify or Pandora or use it to get online. There is also wifi throughout the house.
Design: There are many amazing artistic features to this house. We used custom, handmade tile in the downstairs shower that almost feel ocean like, and tie together the torquoise theme throughout the house. There is a deep blue vessel sink that compliments the tile and sits upon a late 1800's sink basin. There are glass tiles, raku tiles, custom textures, reclaimed 1800’s beams and an ornate Balian architectural piece in the kitchen that truly brings an old world feel to the kitchen. The house feels open and airy and has high, vaulted ceilings.
Hot tub: The hot tub is located right out the back door for easy access and is always set to 104-106 for your comfort. There are two glass enclosed showers, but they are NOT steam showers. They do, however , get pretty warm inside as they are both fairly small enclosures.

Skiiing/ Sledding: The house is located about 15 minutes from Eldora Mountain Resort. Eldora offers plenty of downhill terrain as well as a great Nordic Center with miles of Nordic trails to choose from. Sledding can happen right from the house! The location is perfect for sledding right out the front door! The hill is just right out of the front door. Sleds and snow shoes are provided. The house also backs up to National forest, so it feels very private and really there are 100’s of acres of forest right behind the house. We continue to work on the trail system so that hiking and cross country skiing can happen right from the house.
Hiking: During the summer months there are amazing hikes all within a 15-minute drive. We supply the house with trail maps for your convenience.
Closest town: The nearest town is the town of Nederland. It is located just about 7 miles away from the Casita and has an assortment of restaurants, cafes, bike shops, grocery store, co-op, liquor stores and is a really charming, little, mountain town.
Blackhawk is 12 miles from the house, as well. Technically, we are a Blackhawk address, but it’s actually closer to Nederland than it is to Blackhawk.
The Casita is conveniently located 1 hr. from Denver and 40 minutes from Boulder and are a just a short walk from each other in the mountains 7 miles south east of Nederland. It's the perfect getaway from the city life!! Come pamper yourself with the relaxing, cool breezes at 9,000 ft!!

Colorado trip with friends

Definitely off the beaten path with fantastic views. I would note that you should probably have a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle for the drive up to the place. Everything we needed was there the directions were very clear in the place was very unique.

Unique and Peaceful Cabin

My wife and I spent a long weekend at the Casita and really loved it. The owners have clearly put a lot of thought and time into the details of the cabin and it shows. Artistic and unique touches are everywhere, like the large stargazing windows directly over the master bed. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked, and the hot tub was a dream. The view from the top level deck was stunning, and we were lucky enough to be there when the aspens had turned yellow, two of which hung right over the deck. The area has hundreds of hiking trails and fun things to do, and was an easy drive from DIA. Scott (the owner) was super nice, though we never really needed anything because everything was already fantastic. Highly recommended!

Great Location for Family Wedding in Golden Canyon State Park

Owner was very easy to contact with questions. Kitchen was fully stocked with tableware and cooking supplies. The sleeping accommodations were slightly different than I had expected. The room detached from the main house was too cold for us to use 😟 Location was perfect for our needs!

Perfect location and home for our family event

Our family of 6 stayed 4 nights and celebrated our youngest's graduation from CU. We are not from Colorado, but we do love the outdoors and family time cooking, hiking, sightseeing, and playing board games. We had sunshine, rain, and a full afternoon of snow...Everyone loved the decor and comfort of this beautiful home and location. Nederland is just a few minutes away with nice quaint shops, a grocery store, and a couple of really yummy restaurants! Boulder is a short drive down a beautiful scenic road. Thank you Scott for being a wonderful host! A very memorable time for our family. We will be back!

Delightfully Unique

This home is everything as presented in the description and so much more. It is absolutely one of the most unique and interesting homes you will experience. I cannot think of an amenity that was not provided for. Quiet solitude nestled in beautiful forest setting with magnificent vista of the continental divide. your favorite merlot, a warming fire soaking in the hot tub under the stars with your bff. Home is extrodinarily comfortable. As far from bright city lights as you will ever need. Short drive to good restaurants but take the family chef with you. Can't say enough!

Great house, beautiful location

Just wanted to say thank you to Scott again, he was a great host. The house is at @ 9000 ft and I had a case of altitude sickness. Scott ran to the store and got meds to help me! Family (6 adults, 3 kids) loves the house and had a great time. Location is remote and with no cell phones we really spent time together. TV's are great, music system in the house and kitchen is very well stocked. My grandkids loved the area, hiking and were able to get hummingbirds to land on their finger. Memories we will cherish. Things to remember, brings groceries, stores are not close like the city.

Summer 2020

Pros: location, beds all comfy, living furniture comfy, well stocked kitchen, owner responsive to all request. Cons: Only 3 windows had screens, therefore you could not open windows to get a cross breeze to cool the house down without being overrun with bugs and other varmits. Upstairs master has a window ac unit that helped to cool that room down, but I did not want to listen to it drone all night. Would rather have been able to open "screened" windows and cool down naturally. Sun room (only room with a dining table) is unusable in July - just too hot, so don't plan on being able to use that space. It is also used for storage, and no screen on window, so just not usable space. We ate in the living area using the coffee table for the table. There are tables outside, but we were usually eating after dark so this was not an option. House and outside seating showing some wear (some repairs were being done during our visit which the owner attributed to prior guest), but still usable. Overall, we all had a great time, the house met our needs and the owner tried to promtly fix any problems we ran into.

Private, romantic, and unique get away!

My husband and I love finding unique and special homes on VRBO for little mini vacations and getaways. We booked this home for our 20th wedding anniversary and found it to be everything that the pictures claimed, and more. Make sure you have AWD or 4WD to access the property, but you will not be disappointed. The home is completely secluded and although other homes are not terribly far off (as far as a mountain home goes), there is COMPLETE privacy and the beautiful wooded area around the cabin is stunning. The hot tub, set just outside the sliding glass doors from the kitchen, is heated to the perfect temp. No getting here and calling the owner asking for a higher temp, or anything like that. It was perfect. The polished concrete turquoise floors in the kitchen have in floor heating, which feels amazing. Everything was just how it was listed on the listing and we could not have been more pleased. You'll find unique touches in every corner due to the cabin being built with all reclaimed materials. They certainly didn't scrimp on any details and it feels very luxurious. We would happily book this home again. Not very far away from Black Hawk at all either, if you want to get away for a little gambling (about 20 minutes). The owner made sure to meet us at the property after check-in, when it was convenient for us, to show us a few of the details. That is always helpful in a home away from home. The property is also backed up to national forest, so if you're up for a 2 hour hike, get directions from the owner and you will have a beautiful hike available next to a stream. A little rock scrambling at the end of the hike leads to the most stunning views. We look forward to renting the property again, possibly with friends, for a nice couples' getaway. Thanks for sharing your home with us!!!

Luxury without pretension

I needed a place for about a month within driving distance of Boulder and it had to be complete because I was only bringing my personal items. I'm very comfortable with VRBO and have been using it for 7 years. When I stumbled upon this listing, it fit what I needed. To my surprise, my socks were knocked off. The pictures and descriptions of Casita don't do it justice and I'm not sure my words will either -but I will attempt. First you should know that I have very high expectations and am very particular about quality (my kids make fun of me for this.) My favorite things about Casita: -awesome chef's kitchen with great knives and pots...many varieties of salt -yummy linens -the beds are comfortable and I never woke up sore -sleeping under the skylights and seeing the moon -taking a bath and looking out at the Arapahoe peaks -the fireplaces (yes, plural) -listening to Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald in the mornings with my coffee because there is an AWESOME sound system that pipes through the whole house. -the lighting. Ok, I know this is silly...but the lighting is so well thought out and you'll just have to see it for yourself. While on the topic, there are so many windows too. -Scott plowed the roads at the crack of dawn when it snowed and he shoveled a path to my car. -I came back after a long day and there was a fire going in the living room fire place, so thoughtful. -the sound of the trees swaying in the wind outside. -the quiet. -the heated floors under my bare feet while I cooked. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with Casita but that's what happened. I saw something special EVERY day while I was there. There was something creative and thoughtful everywhere I looked and I would discover these hidden gems as the days passed. I'm sure there are still some that I didn't notice. Advice: get what you need from town before going back to the house because you aren't going to want to leave once you're there!!!

My husband and I spent a week at the Casita and it was fantastic!! The house is SO fun, with lots of really interesting pieces throughout! You can tell the owners put a lot of heart and soul into this property. The vibe is chill, the art is vibrant and fun, the shower and jetted tub ROCK, all the lights are on dimmers which add to the chill, and the location is stellar w/ an incredible view off the balcony! We will definitely stay here again, should we find ourselves back in Colorado!Grateful we found this spot :)

Colorado getaway

Great property with an even better host! Enjoyed time on the back deck looking at the mountains and the hot tub was one of the best we’ve seen at a rental. Really cool and unique place. Lots of natural light in the day and outside lights for coming in late. Make sure to follow the hosts instructions for AWD/4WD especially if you’re not familiar with the terrain. If you just enjoy looking at the scenery I highly recommend a trip to Estes Park to go across the Trail Ridge Rd into Grand Lake, making a large loop back to the casita. It’s a long drive but the scenery definitely makes up for it. Make sure to purchase a day pass to go onto Rocky Mt National Park/ Trail Ridge Rd.

Best vacation of my life!

Our family loves to find beautiful homes in quiet places where we can renew ourselves. This unique, artistic home is on the mountainside with the hummingbirds and the owls. We had amenities we don’t have at home, like the hot tub and latte machine! How great! We went all over to creeks, towns, cities, and Rocky Mountain National park. Definitely go Ziplining at AVA in Idaho Springs, it was incredible! You can find a thousand restaurants, or cook at home - this home has everything you need to make tasty meals for your family. Highly recommend!!!! Our best vacation yet! Thank you!

About the host

Hosted by scott Messersmith

Host profile image
While working on the road as a touring musician, Scott purchased Casa Colorado and began the arduous task of building his greatest creation, piece by piece. A few years later the vision came together when Morgan moved in and they decided to share their home, primarily as a B&B, and later as an entire house rental. By choosing to stay closer to home, they are able to spend more time shaping their vision for a more sustainable lifestyle. Both passionate about high altitude gardening, today they are a little bit farmer, artists, chefs, and professionals that wear many hats to complete the jobs on what they joke has become a mini mountain farm.

Why they chose this property

The Casita is a very special feeling house with artistic touches that stand out in a very unique and special way. The home feels open and airy and has lots of natural light. It's designed with amenities and design in mind for travelers who want it all. We have not left out anything with this home. The surround sound system in the living room provides for the perfect entertainment for movies or just playing music using the in house sonos system. The sonos system features 400,000 radio stations from around the world as well as Spotify or pandora. There are also in wall speakers throughout the whole house. The Casita and Casa Colorado are also 420 friendly!! We want you to come and feel naturally at home when you stay here. We ask that you do respect the home by not smoking any tobacco products inside and take precautions when extinguishing all tobacco and or 420 products. We have cigarette butt dispensers attached to the grill out back for your convenience. Ask about our 420 friendly 'bar'! Come experience all that Colorado has to offer!!
We made sure not to forget anything at Casa Colorado!

What makes this property unique

The environment we've created at Casa Colorado is just as much about entertainment and hospitality as it is about lifestyle. We are committed to filling our space with creativity and inspiration, whether it be in the form of our gardens, art we display or the food we eat. In this house you will experience the vibrancy infused into its creation and celebrated on a daily basis. Like many of our guests, you may end up leaving here inspired to shape your space to incorporate more art, more sustainability and a new recipe or two!
