About this property
Renovated but rustic stone shepherd's cottage, exceptional views
La Bergerie is located in a small hamlet surrounded by vineyards on the slopes of the Caroux mountains in the Regional Park of Haut Languedoc, with covered and open private terraces giving breathtaking views of the Jaur Valley. Walks through beautiful scenery, with many hiking trails (including the GR7) nearby, spectacular gorges with waterfalls and water points among the rocks to swim. Canoeing, fishing, climbing, horse riding, rivers and lakes nearby. Beaches of the Mediterranean at one o'clock.
La Bergerie in 'Les Horts' was built in the 17th century as a stone shepherd's house in the beautiful Jaur Valley, which is now part of the Regional Park of Haut Languedoc. A few stone steps lead to the house of a narrow road with restricted access through the village, and has a secluded landscaped garden surrounding the property. The Bergerie has been imaginatively transformed and enlarged to accommodate four people in comfort with all modern conveniences.
The house is facing south, so very sunny. The basement was once the place where shepherds kept their sheep in winter. Today, it's a large, comfortable two-twin room or a large double bed, with a large vaulted stone ceiling and french doors leading to a sun terrace. The terrace has garden furniture, ideal corner to take meals outside, or enjoy the sun. This space is connected to the main part of the house by a spiral staircase in a modern 'atrium' glass.
Upstairs there is a well equipped kitchen and a comfortable living room with stone walls with exposed beams, a large fireplace with wood burning stove. A large covered terrace opens onto the kitchen and living room. From there, magnificent views along the Juar River valley stretch out as far as the eye can see. A small wooden staircase gives access to a mezzanine which offers the second bedroom above the living room. An unusual and charming space, with a double bed located under a vaulted ceiling with large Velux for cool nights under the stars. Air conditioning is available for scorching summer nights.
In the basement there is a modern bathroom with toilet, walk-in shower and a laundry area equipped with washing machine and dryer.
Hameau Les Horts is halfway between the picturesque historic town of Olargues and Mons-La-Trivalle, connected by the railway converted into a green road, making it an easy cycle or walk of 3km to the café, bakery or shop in both directions (but the return home involves a steep climb). Mons is at the foot of Heric Gorge, renowned for its beautiful scenery, climbing sites, and rocky water pools and waterfalls. The store in the village of Mons is particularly well stocked.
Most walks in the gorges or surrounding hills pass through old chestnut forests shaded by the summer sun, with the possibility of refreshing swim in the fresh water pools. There are also very wild isolated gorges on either side of Les Horts where it is possible to swim in nature.
For serious mountain bikers, Olargues now hosts two of the biggest competitions in Europe; the Enduro World Series and the Epic Enduro Radon, the toughest endurance races in France. At the other end of the line, the PassaPais Voie Verte offers more than 75 km of off-piste for all the family joining all the villages of the Valley of Bedarieux in Mazamet, with occasional cafes along the way.
A paradise for people who are looking for a lot of activities or want to rest.
