About this property

Great family home ideal for your holidays in the Cotentin

Come and relax with family or friends in our charming, spacious and comfortable home while enjoying the location in the heart of the landing sites.
Opposite the place of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, a village famous for its paratrooper John Steel who remained attached to the church tower during the landing of June 6, 1944.

Housing

The house is located in the city center (near the shops: bakery, butcher, press, restaurants and even a snack near the house) and can easily accommodate up to 12 people, the rooms are on 2 floors. The accommodation is perfect for couples (4 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms and toilet attached), families with children (a large room with 2 single beds and a cot) but also large groups.
The garden with its palm grove is facing south, with all you need to relax, enjoy the sun and eat outside. Closed garden without opposite.

The location is ideal for visiting the many sites related to the landing of Normandy (Airborn museum on site, 10 minutes from the landing beaches of Utah Beach, batteries Azeville, Crisbecq ...) but also a little further the city of the sea (Cherbourg, 30 min), Cap de la Hague, the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey), as well as Mont St-Michel.

You will find in our house an atmosphere where well-being and comfort take precedence. Old house renovated and decorated in 2018 Scandinavian countryside style.

The house includes:
Ground floor: a large fully equipped kitchen (with baby high chair), a dining room, toilet, and access to the garden.

1st floor :

1 double room (king size) with bathroom (bath and shower) and adjoining WC.
1 living room with TV and games area, and sofa bed
1 double bedroom (king size) with shower room and adjoining WC.
Laundry
2nd Floor:

1 double room (king size)
1 double room (king size)
1 bathroom, separate toilet
1 large dormitory style room with 2 single beds (single beds), a cot
The garden and its palm grove:

A lawn, a terrace with rest area (sunbathing), a barbecue, a garden. The garden is closed and not overlooked.

To know: In the front yard of the house is a snack (open from May to October from 9:30 to 18:30). There is no nuisance. The outdoor space is the walled garden, which is located at the back of the house and not overlooked.
The linen is maintained by a laundry.

A bit of history: The night of June 5 to June 6, 1944, an American parachutist Clifford A. Maugham, of the 505th PIR of the 82nd US Airborne Division, lands in the garden of this house at 1:45. The house, then occupied by a tired German officer from Russia, coexisted with the Monnier family. In the night of din due to the bombings, to the noise of the planes, M. Monnier with his wife and daughter went to take shelter in the trench at the end of the garden when a paratrooper fell beside them and stuck with them in the trench ... The German officer having seen everything, came flying his rifle over the American. Mr. Monnier, spontaneously, interposed between the two men who ended up talking to each other calmly, the German officer having understood that the Americans were everywhere! The French family spent these incredible few hours with these 2 enemies who finally respected each other. Maughan distributed chocolates, chewing gum and cigarettes (even in German). The American finally took the German and took him prisoner. He promised the German and the family not to kill him. After farewells and thanks to the family, the German was then taken with other prisoners.
The Monnier girl saw Maughan again on the 40th anniversary of the landing and remembered this memory forever engraved in their memories.

Living a dream…
Visiting the Normandy Beaches has been my husband’s dream for decades. He planned to visit with his brother when they retired but his brother never made it to retirement. We had plans to visit with our eldest daughter and her husband in March 2020 but COVID cancelled those plans. Now, in his mid-70s and living with Parkinson’s Disease for the last 19 years, going to the Normandy Beaches seemed impossible but then it wasn't. With a lot of planning, this dream has now been realized, beyond my husband’s expectations, as his 4 children and best friends joined him on this epic adventure. There were 14 in our group of family and friends. We had 2 homes on the square. We stayed at Le Gite de la Liberte, a hugely fantastic part of this trip. Just to be in Sainte-Mere-Eglise was brilliant. But to be on the square and facing the church was beyond belief. The house is fabulous. Beautifully decorated, well equipped, spacious and perfect for our group of 9 adults. The garden was wonderful for relaxing in the sun and chatting. We never used the living room. We typically hung out in the kitchen or sometimes the dining room. The house is close to everything. Literally a few minutes walk away from the boulangerie, restaurants, shops and the Airborne museum. The highlight of this trip was the WWII jeep tour. The Normandy Jeep Tours company is across the square from the house. A wonderful place to stay that will keep alive in our memories for a long time to come.

August 2023
We made a late booking of this property and we were unsure about the cafe in the front garden. We need not have worried. It had no impact on us at all. The GF windows have net curtains and are double glazed. Our access to the house was via the back garden to the rear yard or to the alley to the side of the house. The house was very spacious and comfortable for our extended family of 11. The town was charming, busy with tourists by day but very quiet after 9.30pm. The history of the town during the war was interesting and the Airborne Museum well worth a trip. We enjoyed the beaches both sides of the peninsular, canoeing, Bayeux for the tapestry and exploring the Marais. A successful holiday and we would thoroughly recommend this house.

Super moment entre amis avec enfants
Nous étions 3 couples d'amis avec enfants et avons séjourné une semaine a sainte-mere Église dans ce gîte que nous recommandons. Spacieux et agréable hyper central et calme. A refaire! Merci à nos hôtes qui ont su faire preuve d'une grande réactivité suite à un problème électro ménager
