Beautiful home, plenty of area for yard games. Large living, dining, and kitchen were very nice. Beds were typically family cabin beds, but there was so many sleeping options. Very private and quiet lake. Pontoon rental was so amazing to be able to get on the water each day. Great fishing! Was wonderful to watch the Loon family!
Mike was easy to talk to and get ahold of when we needed him. He was super friendly and very accommodating. The cabin was everything we could have dreamed of and had everything we needed! We will be going back there more!!

I appreciate your kind words. Winter is so beautiful, peaceful & plenty of fun actives, ice fishing, skiing 🎿 snowmobiles. Glad the snow came for you! You are welcome back in any season! Mike
This is a fantastic lake home for a family to rent. House was Great, lots of games and music for the whole family. Big yard for lots of outdoor activities. The pontoon was an option to rent and I would suggest you rent it. The lake was a perfect size and the fishing was fantastic.

Thanks for visiting. Your record northern pike photo has made The Elliott Portage Porch Wall of Fame posting. Thanks for releasing it. I now might have a chance to land that bad boy! I already purchased your lucky lure!
Amazing property, water is clear and clean. Friendly people boating on lake, not crowded.
We totally loved having a pontoon to rent, kayak and canoe available. Quiet neighborhood and you can hear the Loons calling to each other. Great family home. You will enjoy your stay at "Elliott's Portage".

Thank you for your kind words so happy you had good weather and a nice vacation. Please visit again!
We had a great time! The house was perfect, enough room for everyone, all the amenities we needed. It was really nice having the pontoon right there for the days we contracted. Mike was great, very responsive. Thanks for a fun, relaxing week!

You were great guests and so happy you had good weather and a good time. And thanks for letting my technician install new boiler and start on AC. Next visit if you come again AC!
We loved this beautiful lake property. We were there for two weeks, one week with our 4 adult children and one week with just my husband, me, and our dog. It's spacious with lovely lake views. The kitchen is well-stocked and great for cooking. The lake is beautiful and clear and we really enjoyed using the canoe. We would definitely return.

Thank you for the generous review and looks like the weather cooperated for the most part and you were way too kind to even launder the towels , bedding too. (My caretaker felt guilty so she mowed the lawn as a bonus for me🤠)
We spent our family vacation with our daughter and two grandsons at this beautiful lake home. It was out intent to give our grandsons an opportunity to fish and experience the great outdoors in Northern Minnesota. It met all our expectations. Only drawback was the mosquitos, but even those weren't all that bad.
Thanks for the wonderful week.

So glad the weather and fish cooperated and thank you for leaving the home, pontoon & grill in such perfect condition. My caretaker said it was one of her easiest preparation and cleanings ever! 🤠
Nice cabin tucked away at a lake that felt like a private lake. Very roomy. Owner was kind and easy to work with. Wi-fi hotspot only so it was hard to stay connected to the internet if more than one person was doing significant online activity, but it makes it easier to disconnect from everything! Beds are a little stiff, but the rest of the cabin made up for the minor discomfort.

Thanks for visiting! Internet is a sore spot and extremely costly with the few of us that live up off the grid all year but hopefully in the near future it will be more affordable with better speed and more choices.
Its a beautiful and spacious cabin that was well equipped with everything we needed from kitchenware to beach toys, floats and a canoe to a wide assortment of games and DVD's. During the week we felt like we had the lake to ourselves. It was quiet and peaceful. Lots of scenic nature and wildlife to take in. Renting the pontoon was definitely a bonus. Lots of swimming, fishing and topping off the evenings with a campfire by the water and making s'mores was enough to keep us content all week and make memories to last a lifetime. This is a great place to stay!

I’m so happy your family enjoyed your stay while I vacationed away. Please come back again sometime. The fish will only get bigger. 🎣
We enjoyed our time in this beautiful home. Plenty of room for everyone and had everything you need. It was great having a full bathroom upstairs as well. We rented the pontoon and fished multiple times each day and caught a lot of fish. One suggestion is either moving the fire pit or having the area cleared so it could be utilized. We enjoyed sitting on the patio looking at the lake and we saw multiple deer, loons and eagles. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.

Thank you. I will take your comments about the fire pit and clear for next guests. It has been a hot summer so it usually goes unused & I just had cleared limbs and brush on it. Please visit again!
Our family of 5 (kids 10 months to 10 y.o.) had a great time! Added pontoon for added/improved swimming options and quiet lake tours to end our nights. Used provided fishing gear and the kids caught some nice sunnies, smallmouth and northern! Home was large and inviting. Plenty of space. Kitchen was large and well stocked. Plenty of extras so that I didn’t need to pack my entire kitchen. Lots of outside toys/floaties/bikes/kayak to keep us busy. Had fun on rainy day playing music via Bluetooth throughout home sound system and added karaoke system while playing plenty of provided board games. Nice to not have to pack a crib or a high chair for baby. Mike even gave us a call to tell us about Looking for the northern lights one night. Mike was very attentive and helpful. Great stay! Would return tomorrow!
Our group consisted of grandparents, our adult children and grandchildren. We enjoyed the privacy of a lovely, rustic cabin located on a beautiful lake. We all loved the cabin decor in the house but we spent more time out on the dock and pontoon boat fishing. We had a wonderful time and hope to stay there again someday.
Lots of room inside cabin. Speakers through out and outside was a real nice bonus. Lake was clean but has a mucky bottom with some weeds so water shoes might help. Tons of fish in lake makes for fun times fishing even for little ones. Boat works great and in good condition. Mike was easy to communicate with via text. Overall really good experience and will be back.
We were thrilled with this property! I LOVE the floorplan of this home/cottage. It had plenty of space for the 3 of us. We caught fish every single time we went out! The pontoon was a blast! We anchored in the middle of the lake and swam from it. We brought our 16' fishing boat, and it fit perfectly on the other side of the dock. We also brought kayaks, and 3 or 4 mornings, I was out on the glassy water at 6:30 with my camera, hoping to capture the eagles or loons before the rest of the world woke up. I captured beautiful photos of fish, eagles, loons, turtles, chipmunks, ducks, and bees on flowers.
We are always concerned that the tap/drinking water will taste bad at the cottages we stay at, but OH MY GOSH... the tap water here is DELICIOUS! So so good! I drank so much water this week, and filled my bottle before we left yesterday!
Hmmm. What else... The nights were cool and breezy, the days warm and lazy- but not too warm. We had everything we needed at this beautiful cottage, and Mike is one of the best hosts we've ever rented from. We'd highly recommend renting this cottage, and we hope to again in the future! It has all the 'creature comforts' , and we felt more like we were housesitting than renting a cottage. We enjoyed the whole house stereo system- playing classical, loon calls, and soft jazz while we puttered about cooking and playing cards.
Rent it. You won't regret it.

You 3 made my day! I’m blessed to live here most of the year. Please come again. And, yes, you can drink the water 💧 The new well is 93 feet deep and eliminates the iron taste.
My husband and I stayed at Mike's property for 10 days. We also brought our small dog with us. We had an absolutely wonderful stay!!! Here were the highlights of Mike's property:
1. The cabin is located on a beautiful lake that is not too big and not too small. There are very few boaters on the lake, which made it feel incredibly peaceful. I would highly recommend renting Mike's pontoon boat! The pontoon boat is great for relaxing or fishing. We used it almost every day.
2. The wildlife that you will see on the lake is awesome! We saw loons, eagles, hawks, deer, and tons of other birds.
3. The bugs were not bad at all. I worried that I would be eaten alive (because bugs love me) and that was just not the case. We did have to use bug spray each day but I walked away with just a handful of bug bites.
4. The house is equipped with everything you need for a wonderful stay. The house was very big for just my husband and I. I especially loved the open concept on the main floor. It also has a grill, a fire ring, surround sound, a fabulous bath tub, towels, and a huge collection of DVDs and CDs. We enjoyed watching a different movie late each night.
5. We cooked at Mike's house every night. We did not have a problem finding what we needed to cook. We did, however, bring our own spices. We also bought groceries in Grand Rapids the first night we stayed at Mike's. While there, we ate at a cute restaurant called Unwined Up North Wine Bar. Very delicious! Grand Rapids is about a 45 minutes drive. There are lots of restaurants there.
6. We went on some wonderful hikes. Some of the hikes were close and others were a short drive. All of our hikes were outstanding and I would highly recommend looking into the various state parks.
7. Mike was very gracious and super responsive. If we had a question about anything, he responded very quickly.
Overall, I would recommend Mike's property.
After a incredibly bad 2020 and early 2021, this vacation was the turnaround we needed. The house and lake combined to a beautiful and peaceful place to lift ourselves up.
Our host was gracious and answered every question in a timely manner. The house was clean, well-taken care of, and offered up many pleasant and relaxing moments.
Renting the pontoon gave us many additional hours of joy.
If you need a place to get away, this is a lake vacation the way it should be. I highly recommend you put down your electronics, take someone love and head to this spot in Minnesota.
Rent it. You won't regret it. We loved our time here. We hope to return next year. Thank you , Mike.
Our family had a great time. Our host communicated well and was very accomodating, It was a lovely outdoor space with access to nice sandy beach.

You had some warm days! Thanks for your comments in the cabin guest book. Glad you met “Ben or Bernice” our lake’s 24/7 year a round resident Eagle 🦅 Probably hoping for one of your fish 🎣
We really enjoyed our stay here! Cabin was better than pictured. Beach was nice for kids to play and swim, plenty of games were provided. Perfect for larger groups! We rented the pontoon and had a great time bringing the kids out to fish!

I enjoyed your comments in The Cabin’s Journal and I’m so happy you found a few fish. It is fun to see young kids catch their first ones—even if it does not set a Minnesota record.

What a mess
It was advertised as 4 bedrooms, only had 3. The place looks like a bachelor pad that had not been cleaned in months - floors, tables, chairs, refrigerator, microwave, pontoon boat, bathrooms, personal stuff all over the place. 8 of us arrived after a 3+ hour drive, we all voted to drive back 3+ hours rather than stay in the mess. Vacuum cleaners very very poor suction.

This review is a biased unfair depiction of what actually occurred. I contacted the person that booked immediately by phone in an attempt to please and rectify any issues. The main one was his wife was not happy with the 5 sleeping area rooms that were described accurately on the site. All of the others are a gross exaggeration. The home was professionally cleaned top to bottom, bedding, floors, counters, cupboards and drawers and all 3 vacuums worked perfectly and should not have even been needed. I’m not sure what the concern was with personal property, it is a home not a hotel and most photos were removed, drawers emptied etc. This property included a nice pontoon and was value priced. The party also did not
Pay the site for a dog upfront and when my
Caretakers came to check on the home, said even though I refunded the money, at least
One couple stayed overnight—left things in refridgerator, trash, one bed used despite a full refund which I was not obligated to issue.
About the host
Hosted by Mike Elliott
I'm an avid father, grandfather, canoe paddler, angler, hiker, volunteer public radio broadcaster and writer that tore down the old summer cabin to build Elliott Portage and moved from the big city to the good life near Jacobson MN (161 and still growing) Love to share this place with others when I'm not here and it is available.
Why they chose this property
If you like an off the beaten path smaller quiet clean lake and lots of nature, wildlife, decent fishing--room to explore and sitting by an evening fire, watching the sunrise and a star filled sky and occassional northern lights at night--you will enjoy Elliott Portage but you will have to drive 25 miles for a McDonalds, Target or a movie to Grand Rapids MN.
What makes this property unique
My past guests comment on the quiet and also the fall and winter seasons ( skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing) that are prime times for those that do not need to boat, swim or use SPF and bug dope. Prime 4 wheeling, snowmobile country, Ice fishing, Nordic skiing and the JACOBSON CLASSIC ANTIQUE SNOW MACHINE EVENT mid February where anyone can ride for under $10. ENTRY FEE. Fall colors are great end of Sept-mid October too.
