A character home in the medieval village of Caunes Minervois, nestled at the foot of the Montagne Noire, in the heart of the Languedoc wine-growing region, Cathar country and Tour de France territory. The house, built over centuries but stripped back to the medieval walls, has a secluded outside courtyard, views of the Romanesque abbey, and the Pyrenees. It sleeps 6, has 2 bathrooms, living, dining, kitchen, all newly upgraded, and a lovely library/2nd lounge on the top floor. The historic medieval village, at the edge of the Montagne Noire National Park, is a fabulous base from which to explore Cathar castles, cycle Tour de France stages, visit the ancient cities of Carcassonne, Narbonne, Beziers, walk, indulge in fresh village food, markets, and the wines of the Languedoc- Roussillon region. The beach is just 45 minutes away.

Manifique!
What an absolutely wonderful time we have just spent in Caunes Minervois - everything we hoped for and more. Taking the house for a month allowed us to really get a feel for the village although for 2 of us it was a return visit after 13 years! The house is extremely comfortable and all amenities are excellent. We were lucky enough to win the toss and get the top floor bedroom with adjoining lounge which had such a beautiful outlook across the roof tops to the distant hills. Trying to understand the instruction sheets for the washing machine and cooker was interesting as there was no English translation but with the use of Google we managed to work things out! We are more than happy to thoroughly recommend the house and would like to say a big "thank you" to Elizabeth for letting us stay. On the down side was as Australians and New Zealanders BBQ is second nature and we would have loved to have been able to do this in the courtyard.

We are so glad you enjoyed the house. We will definitely be adding a barbeque next Summer and we apologise for the lack of English instructions - if you had mailed us we would have translated! We hope you will return one day.

Lovely, remodeled home in the center of the village
This tastefully remodeled home is quite spacious, with a full "suite" on the top level (with bedroom, bathroom and sitting area) and two, large bedrooms on the middle floor. It has a good kitchen for cooking and a private courtyard for dining (and safe-keeping of race bikes for the cyclists). The bakery is walking distance for fresh croissants and bread. The village abbey is around the corner and worth a visit. There is good cycling, nice walking routes and interesting places to visit in the area. I would definitely recommend this to friends as a nice place to stay.

Peaceful and Lovely house
We have spent a week in this house in August with our two small children and it was fantastic. The house is beautiful inside and very tastefully decorated. The furniture and appliances are of exceptional quality. In particular, we loved the layout, the kitchen and the spaciousness of the 3 rooms. The village is quiet and friendly neighbors; the town is well connected by road. The attention and willingness of the owner (Elizabeth) made us feel very comfortable. All very clean. I recomend it. We have no doubt that if next year we return to southern France we will call the owner to rent it. I recommend visiting near the village church of Notre Damme du Cros.

About the host
Your host
I am an architect and author. My husband is also an architect and a photographer. This house was either serendipity or insanity. It's been a 6 year journey. Caunes Minervois gets into your soul.
I love animals, mad about dogs, can be an animal rights and ethical-food dictator if left to my own devices. My son has been a vegetarian since the day he was old enough to spit meat out. My daughter is a committed carnivore. My husband Justin likes peculiar mid seventies music and restores even older peculiar bicycles .
Why they chose this property
I just knew it as soon as we walked in. We're architects. That means sucker-for-punishment in all languages. This is the third house we've taken apart and refurbished extensively. It's the only one we were clever enough not to live in while we did it.
What makes this property unique
It's in the heart of the medieval village and in the heart of the country.
