NEW BEACHFRONT HOME ON THE BEACH IN THE JUNGLE. Monkeys overhead daily. Scarlet macaws, toucans, sloths, and lots of monkeys overhead. Armadillos, anteaters, and other amazing wildlife on the grounds. Whales & dolphins, pass in front. One of the most private beaches in the area, at low tide. A freshwater pool, great surf spots, jungle hikes, yoga classes, good restaurants, and a great locals' bar, most within walking distance. Plus, the best on-site host/caretaker ever, Oscar!

About the host
Hosted by John Shurtz

I've been a bilingual surfer, and traveling in Latin America since I was 18 years old.
Found a slice of paradise here on the Osa Peninsula, where the jungle meets the sea, in the early 90's, built a platform and pitched a tent, dug a well, and the rest has been a labor of love.

Why they chose this property
I was a general contractor in California, and now have a hectares, 2.5 acres, of jungle on the beach to continue building a dream that others can enjoy.
There is great well water here, as well as water from the nearby river, so even in the dry season we are set.
The local community, including many expats, is great, which is a big plus as well.
It's still off the grid here in Matapalo, so large hotels are kept out, and eco-tourism, bird watching and surfing are the main attractions. Four good surf breaks all within walking distance, and occasionally it breaks right in front of the property. Yet there is not a lot of foot traffic along the beach in front, since the main surfing areas are about 1 kilometer down the beach.
Multiple waterfalls are within walking distance.
Eco-lodges and hotels are in the area, so there are restaurants, yoga retreats, and civilization around, but still, mellow and all off the grid.
There is a main house on the property with a swimming pool. And now I've built this new, 2 bedroom jewel, 50 meters from the high tide line, and right under almond, strangler fig and guanacaste trees, the monkey bridge where 20 or more white faced, howlers, spider and squirrel monkeys pass daily.
This new home has a gorgeous view across the Golfo Dulce, and at times whales and dolphins play out front.
So many other highlights.

"OMG! This slice of heaven cannot be described in words. We have been to 17 countries in the last three years and had wonderful times, but this was the best of all!"

What makes this property unique
I'd be remiss to not mention the incredible family that lives on the land, and takes care of our guests. Oscar, and his family are the best.
As Gina a guest in November 2019 said:
"John’s place is an amazing jungle get away. My boyfriend and I stayed 4 nights and was the highlight of our trip. Every morning we woke up to holler monkeys! We felt so spoiled. In addition, Oscar the caretaker was awesome."
