This rental has so much potential—beautiful surroundings, close to Yellowstone, and the house looks clean. However, the stay was overshadowed by overwhelming odors of ancient mummy breath mixed with industrial pesticide. We soon discovered the cause: mothballs containing Para-dichlorobenzene, a chemical known to cause serious health issues including headaches, dizziness, liver and kidney damage, and cancer. We informed the owner, who sent someone to “check it out” but ultimately did nothing, claiming they didn’t notice any smell. Oddly, the owner seemed more concerned about a burnt-out light bulb (which was never fixed) than the overpowering fumes.Even more concerning, there were no smoke alarms installed. We found two removed and hidden in an upstairs closet, presumably because they kept alarming from the chemical concentration. The mounts in the kitchen and living area suggested they were meant to be there. No carbon monoxide detectors were seen anywhere. Fire extinguishers in the kitchen & laundry were last checked in 2018, so clearly not up to date.We were forced to find other places to gather and eat because of the stench and health concerns. With a strict no-refund policy, we were stuck in an unsafe environment. The home has potential if these serious safety and health hazards were addressed, but until then, I cannot recommend this rental to anyone. Proceed with caution—it’s beautiful but could be genuinely harmful.
