Town: The market town of Barnard Castle stands on the site of an ancient Roman ford in the glorious unspoiled countryside of Teeside. The town takes its name from its 12th Century founder, Bernard de Balliol. The castle was later developed by the Beauchamp family and Richard III, and the ruin of the castle still dominates the settlement, set on a high rock above the town overlooking the River Tees and is well worth a visit. The town itself has lovely cobbled streets and back lanes ready to be explored. The surrounding area is home to some fabulous walking country, with the Pennine Way, Teeside Way and the magnificent High Force waterfalls all close to hand. This area is home to some great family attractions and is a tremendous location for an enjoyable holiday.
