About this property
Gîte du Pont des Varnay
An authentic, characterful late 18th-century Bresse farmhouse, perfectly preserved and steeped in history (one of the oldest buildings in the village), carefully restored respecting the traditional brick and timber-framed architecture, nestled on the edge of a bucolic pasture occasionally grazing sheep (without causing any disturbance). A peaceful residential hamlet nestled in the heart of the countryside, a stone's throw from the Seille, the most important river in the Bresse region of Burgundy, largely classified as a "Natura 2000 Zone" for its remarkable ecosystem (migratory bird sanctuary, rare plant species, numerous fish including the famous wels catfish, wildlife, etc.) and a waterway through superb landscapes (pleasure boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, etc.). A peaceful setting nestled in a charming, unspoiled rural landscape of hedgerows and woods, adjoining the typical village of Saint-Usuge, which boasts a fishing pond (picnic tables and a playground) and is known for its unique 16th-century church in the Franche-Comté style. This spacious and comfortable cottage offers a warm country charm, blending tradition with a contemporary feel, combined with careful heritage restoration (preserving the original beams and fireplace mantels). Enjoy the tranquil and relaxing atmosphere of a traditional country house. A pleasant, secluded lawned garden opens onto the surrounding countryside, offering beautiful unobstructed views. A large terrace (both sunny and shaded) overlooks a spacious gravel courtyard (perfect for a natural pétanque court). Guests have access to the owners' vegetable garden nearby (fresh vegetables can be picked with their permission). Layout: Detached, single-story house adjoining the owners' house (complete independence). Wi-Fi. Electric underfloor heating. Kitchen, living/dining room, 2 bedrooms (one double bed 140x190cm / one single bed 80x190cm), shower room, separate WC. Private garden, terrace, and parking. All amenities 7 km away. An authentic, characterful Bresse farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, steeped in history, has been fully and meticulously restored. It sits peacefully in the countryside, 7 km from Louhans and its river marina, famous for its iconic medieval shopping street with its "157 arcades" (one of the most remarkable of its kind in Europe) and its renowned Monday market, a designated "Remarkable Site of Taste." This tranquil residential hamlet is nestled within a pleasant, unspoiled rural setting on the banks of the Seille River, a navigable waterway and protected natural site (largely classified as a "Natura 2000 Zone" for its remarkable ecosystem). It lies on a marked cycling route ("Coup de cœur" cycling loop) and signposted footpaths ("green walks"), 5 km from the greenway, and not far from the Romanesque churches circuit. In the heart of the magnificent Bresse Bourguignonne region – birthplace of the renowned Bresse poultry AOC – boasting incredibly diverse landscapes ranging from hedged plains dotted with ponds, forests, rivers, meadows, and the foothills of the Jura mountains – at the crossroads of the Ain and Jura departments. A prime location at the intersection of the Chalonnais, Tournugeois-Clunisois (designated a "Land of Art and History"), Mâconnais, Bresse Jurassienne, and Bresse Savoyarde regions, close to both the world-famous vineyards of Southern Burgundy (Côtes Mâconnaises, Côtes Chalonnaises, Côtes de Beaune, and Hautes Côtes de Beaune) and the Jura (with its various wine routes to explore). Ideally located for exploring the region: 24 km from Lons-le-Saunier, 35 km from Tournus (a world-renowned abbey site), 37 km from Verdun-sur-le-Doubs (and its river marina nestled at the confluence of the Doubs and Saône rivers), 39 km from Chalon-sur-Saône (a designated "City of Art and History"), 42 km from Seurre, 57 km from Bourg-en-Bresse, 58 km from Beaune (the illustrious fortified city, "capital of Burgundy wines"), and 70 km from the TGV train stations (Le Creusot and Mâcon-Loché). A truly unique location, the perfect retreat for a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway. Ideal for couples or families!

The majority of the gite has been beautifully refurbished but it has a small inconvenient WC and a truly dreadful shower - small and with a tatty curtain. We saw the proprietor for about five minutes when we arrived and then not at all for the rest of our week's stay, despite the proprietors living in the adjacent property.
Viel Platz. Freundliche Besitzer. Gute Einrichtung. Prima Küche. Sehr gute Betten: Was will man mehr?
