About this property

Comfortable Two Bedroom Two Bath shingled cottage in the West Sonoma wine region

(FYI the monthly rate calculated by this website may not be accurate. Please inquire)

Set well back from the road on 4.5 acres...birds, hawks, owls, turkeys, deer, dragonflies, trees, lawns, flowers, grape arbor, wisteria, and, seasonally, apples, blackberries, and persimmons. The level walk-out from the living room to the patio and garden provides comfortable, private in and outdoor living during spring, summer and fall. The winters are cozy too with the wood burning fireplace and a sofa bed in the living room. We recently added a zoned mini-split heating/AC system to improve comfort summer and winter.

Our place is not luxury but very comfortable for a relaxed vacation. It is perfect for two couples and people with children. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the hallway and each has a queen bed. One has a private full bath with a European style clawfoot tub and hand held shower. The other bath has a stall shower. The living room has a double sofa bed. We have a paknplay and plenty of toys for the under 8 crowd. The backyard, though unfenced, is well defined and excellent for play. There are two acres of woods on the hillside.
Our formal dining area seats six easily with immediate access to the shady backyard. The Kitchen is fully equipped and has stainless steel appliances including an induction range, dishwasher, refrigerator.
The private back yard of the house has a trellised patio, a lawn area, and steps to the upper acres. It is great for viewing birds and other wildlife. It is often chilly in the evening so bring a jacket to enjoy our deck.
Our garden has paths with pretty flowers in the spring and summer. Don't forget to check out the stone waterway at the south end of the property. In summer it feels like a different climate- a nice cool place to relax on hot days. An extra pair of flat shoes are a good idea for walking on the gravel paths. This property was named Owl Hill because the owls will call back and forth to each other from the tree tops.
Approximately 20 minutes to Bodega Bay. Less than 10 minutes to the town of Freestone, Osmosis Spa, and Wild Flour Bakery and within minutes to some of the best West Sonoma County wineries.
We try to offer a great value both in and out of season. Check out our off season and long term rates. We have had several monthly guests in the last few years. An easy house to "settle in". We are a Bay Area family, grandparents of three families each with two kids. All of us enjoy this vacation home when we can get away. Not luxury but very comfortable for a relaxed vacation.
The cottage shares a driveway with caretaker unit that is downhill and facing away from the vacation rental.

Secret Hideaway

My husband and I lived in Occidental for at least 50 years before moving out of state for business. So when our niece was getting married in Santa Rosa, we needed a place to stay with my daughter and her husband. I found Owl Hill on line @ VRBO. It is so comfortable, casual, fully equipped, very private and lives bigger than the square feet advertised. The two bedrooms are at opposite ends so very private. Highly recommend.

Super host, indeed!!

Dawn's cottage was very comfortable & homey; a great getaway! We so appreciated Dawn's accessible & candor while she guided us in respect to the area fires. As it turned out, the air quality was great & we had a wonderfully relaxing trip.

Great getaway!

Quiet and secluded, with access to several small towns to visit. I would recommend staying in warmer weather, as the heat is not the best. Bring sweatshirts and lap blankets!

Heaven on earth

We loved this cottage! Close to town but very private and quiet. Fully equipped kitchen and lovely deck to relax and dine. Great restaurant just down the road and a wonderful market nearby to pick up anything you need without going into town. Beds were comfortable and it has a working fireplace. We will book again when we return to Sebastopol!

birthday trip

Once we arrived, we recognized the home immediately. We've been there when our in laws stayed last year. Great home, very clean, comfortable, and quiet. Great kitchen and a perfect night for the fireplace. The only downside was that it took some time to get the inside warmed up.

Beautiful cottage in a serene rural setting

Our trip was on a cold and rainy weekend but the warm comfortable cottage made us all feel at home. The house has a great kitchen and beautiful stain glass accents. We were a group of 4 and all slept comfortably and had plenty of space. The dining room table was a wonderful place for us all to sit and download after a long day. We would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful, serene cottage hideaway

Quaint and beautiful cottage in a wooded like setting. All the comforts of home, and then some. Coffee and wine on the patio looking out into the yard and beyond into the wooded area. Redwoods everywhere, wild life and all kinds of birds. The perfect location for relaxing and rejuvenation! Thank you Dawn for everything. We look forward to staying again.

Lovely cottage in the woods

We had a very relaxing stay at this cozy cottage. The kitchen was very well equipped and although the house is an older structure it had all the necessary modern conveniences. Also very comfortable beds and furnishings and a great clawfoot tub in one of the bathrooms. It was especially nice to have numerous spots to sit on the deck outside to catch the end of day sunshine and to have the backyard view from the inside through large patio windows. All in all, a great getaway from civilization!

Country setting near wineries and towns

This was comfortable and the owner communicated well. The binder is sooo helpful. We had a glitch with the wifi only in that our devices would not save the password so most every time we had to sign back in. I knew how to use the mini splits but my cousins had no clue so info in the binder on settings would be helpful for some. We all shared the one shower as the master tub had a hand held showerhead but no high mounting or curtains so they would have had to sit in the tub to use it. The patio is a lovely setting!

Overall a nice stay

This is a charming little cottage surrounded by a simply marvelous garden on the backside of the home. The listing is slightly misleading as the property may be 4.5 acres, but most is not easily accessible and there is another home immediately next door (streetside) of the cottage that is occupied by multiple individuals. Nevertheless, it is quiet and peaceful. The house has all you should need for a comfortable stay. My wife found some parts of the home in need of a good cleaning, but it was mostly surficial dirt and no big deal to me. Wifi is terrific. Climate is just awesome for leaving the windows open all night for a nice cool sleep. Sebastopol is great little town that is readily accessible for good shopping and food. You are surrounded by wineries, so no complaints there. Good access to the rest of Sonoma as well.

The home was exactly as described on VRBO. We had one question for the host and she responded and answered. She even offered earlier check in and later departure which was nice. Home was located near activities we were visiting. Saw the wild turkeys! Enjoyed our stay.

Wonderful Woodland Getaway in Sebastopol!

We were two couples who were looking for a relaxing getaway near wine country and were so excited to find this cottage. It's surrounded by beautiful, shaded landscape and we loved that we felt like we were camping, but with the luxury of having a cozy house to sleep in! We loved seeing the deer and wildlife every morning. Our beds were comfy and the kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained and there was plenty of room for the four of us. The location was great and we enjoyed exploring wine country and then coming back to our retreat. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway in nature!

Perfect location for our needs

My daughter and I had a great time here. It was the perfect location, close to all the places we wanted to see (Armstrong Woods and Bodega Bay - about 35 minutes away) and had all the things we needed to cook some of our meals. This is one of the best stocked rentals I have been to - I'd venture to say the best. We didn't use all of the items, but for those wanted to cook at the rental, it had all the things: blender, coffeemaker, wok, tea kettle, pots and pans, etc. I would imagine it would make life easy for a family or group who wanted to save and cook meals at the rental. It's about 10-15 minutes from the big chain grocery stores as well as some of the cutest little shops ever. We made some meals at the rental, but we also ventured out and ate at Wild Poppy Cafe (just a few minutes away and so yummy), Cozy Plum (pricey but delicious vegan options), and Acre Pizza. Also, yum.My point of this is you can choose to eat locally or at the rental. Either is great. I loved having the options. The backyard is peaceful and gorgeous. If my kids were little, I would have loved to let them play outside while I just drank some tea and relaxed. Instead, I just drank tea by myself. HAHA.Dawn was one of the most communicative and accommodating hosts I've had to date. I really appreciated her allowing us early check-in and late check-out. That really helped since we had some time issues.I would most definitely stay here again and highly recommend this rental and host.

Very nice, rustic and peaceful stay

Really enjoyed this property; we were looking for a quiet spot reasonably close to Sebastopol (10 minute drive door-to-door). This fit the bill, lovely older (but renovated) house w/beautiful mission style trim in redwood, a fireplace, etc. Screen doors galore for fresh air but are a bit fussy, need adjustment so they can slide w/o being so careful. The cleaners used were not heavily scented, a nice thing for those of us who find the scents irritating. Didn't use the trail, it's rough so assumes good knees. Even w/o walking the trail we saw owls, turkeys and heard the coyotes yipping to each other for a bit, very peaceful. Access road is a bit rough and narrow, pretty tight for 2 SUVs meeting, not a problem for most cars. Finding it could be a bit rough without GPS.

We are a Bay Area family, grandparents of three families each with two kids. All of us enjoy this vacation home when we can get away. Not luxury but very comfortable for a relaxed vacation.

Why they chose this property

We bought this home to be close to wineries, hiking and ocean but also for the beautiful gardens and trails that are on the property. While the home has been updated, it is still casual and comfortable. We enjoy having our grandchildren visit and they enjoy it too.
