Built around 1795 by Thomas Harrison Jr., 'house carpenter,' the two-story side hall/parlor clapboard house is the oldest two story dwelling in St. Michaels. It stands prominently on the town harbor adjacent the town PARK. The house is fitted with late eighteenth century style woodwork. The floors are wide plank heart of pine, and the windows have very old glass. The federal style stair, the raised six panel doors, and the period chair rails are original features. The house is furnished with antique and reproduction furniture in keeping with the historic nature of the house.
A floor plan is available upon request.
On the first floor of the original or 'Harrison House' are the side hall (foyer) and a large PARLOR (living room) with plenty of seating and a spectacular view of St. Michaels Harbor. To the rear of the living room is the LIBRARY having a fireplace, books, a television, stereo, games, cards and puzzles, and the DINING ROOM which can comfortably seat ten. To the rear of the dining room is a one story wing which houses a large, fully equipped KITCHEN. Also on the first floor is a DEN having a queen sleep sofa, a fireplace and a half bath.
For relaxing outside on the property, the house offers a brick PATIO facing the harbor and the Miles River, and a covered PORCH facing the white picket fence enclosed back yard and gardens.
The second floor of the Harrison house includes the MASTER BEDROOM having a queen size poster bed and a twin trundle bed, a full bath, and an adjacent small sitting or READING ROOM which has a twin sofa bed. The second story of the rear portion of the house includes the BLUE ROOM having a queen bed, an adjacent 7X7 room with a twin bed, a full bath, and the 8X8 PEACH ROOM having a twin bed. This was by far the best vacation we have ever had. We have been to St. Michaels several times and this house was a treasure. Each room was charming and full of history. Being right on the water made it even more magical. The weather was perfect and being able to sit in that beautiful back yard was so relaxing. Cannot wait to get back. Our host was wonderful.
We had a lovely long weekend stay with our family, and greatly enjoyed the gorgeous historical house. The location is perfect: convenient to shops and restaurants and the maritime museum, picturesque, spacious with nooks for reading and relaxing, and near a park where our children could run and throw a football. Tom was a terrific host with bespoke tips for activities and dining. We look forward to coming again someday.
Really nice place for the family reunion! Loved it. If you’ve ever been to St Michael’s, it’s the house on the water that you’ve always wanted to stay in. Lovely!
This house is in the perfect location for a stay in St. Michaels. It is a short walk through a beautiful historic neighborhood to the main street with all its shops and restaurants. And, it is also on the water near the town docks and museum. The home itself, built in 1795, has been carefully restored, you feel like you have taken a trip back in time while still having all the modern conveniences. The host was very polite and responsive. I highly recommend this home and this host!
Everything about our stay at this very well appointed waterside home was fantastic. Proximity to the shops and restaurants in town and the waterfront made for a fantastic spot to spend a weekend in St. Michaels.
This was our second Easter spent at the Thomas Harrison house and walking in the door felt like coming home again. There is plenty of space inside and out and plenty of cosy nooks. Town is steps away--enjoy shopping and yummy meals. Views of the lake from certain rooms in the house are the icing on th cake. Can't wait for next year!!
Incredible location and super interesting, historical home! Couldn't have asked for a better experience! Thomas is wonderful and very communicative and accommodating!
We were 8 family members attending a family wedding. The accommodations were perfect … everyone felt very much “at home” and enjoyed staying in a wonderful historic house. The location next to water ,park, restaurants, church, wedding reception were all 5-10 minute walk away …perfect
The house was exactly what we needed. It had a great location. The view was incredible and it was just a couple blocks from the main drag.
It is an old house; so you need to be gentle, and there were a few cosmetic issues, but other than that, it was great.
Location of the property was awesome. The house needs a little TLC and cleaning up. It could use a few more supplies like trash bags, toilet paper and dishwasher detergent. It could also use full size sheets for the sleeper sofa. We found fitted sheets but no top sheets.

Glad you enjoyed the home. Confused by your comment re the fireplaces. There are requirements that must be followed in using fireplace for guest safety and to protect the property.
Lovely home on the harbor in St Michaels. Walking distance to dozens of shops and restaurants but secluded enough to enjoy peace and quiet. Plenty of room for our group of three couples (room to spare!). Host was friendly and easy to contact. Will stay again on our next visit to St. Michaels.
Very historic with a beautiful view of the Marina. Weather was a little too cold to be able to enjoy the grounds but we were able to walks into Town on Saturday.
Would definitely recommend the rental.
Thomas has created an amazing and idyllic experience on the Chesapeake Bay in St Michaels. The home is wonderful, the wifi and AC are great, the walk to Main Street is 5 minutes and the instructions for access and use were perfect. Highly recommend with 5 Stars!

About the host
Hosted by Thomas Byrne
I purchased the Thomas Harrison house in 1991 and restored it over the next few years. The process of research and restoration of this house, built when George Washington was President, greatly increased my interest in historic architecture and the history of St. Michaels. This interest lead to the purchase and restoration of the nearby Washington Melson, Thomas Blades and John Bruff houses (click on link for info on these two bedroom properties).
Why they chose this property
The combination of the waterfront location (with spectacular views of harbor and Miles River), architecture and the historic character of house and the surrounding area, walking distance to shops, restaurants, museums, etc., size of the living space, patio and porch, as well as the people of St. Michaels, make this a very special place.
What makes this property unique
The Harrison house sits prominently on the harbor in St. Michaels with wonderful water views. It is the ONLY large vacation rental house in Town. Walking distance to everything... shops, restaurants, coffee shops, museums, parks, Town pool, tennis courts, library, farmer's market and other attractions. Adjacent cottages can be rented if size of party exceeds 9.
