About this property

Location, Location, Location! - W Melson House - Beautiful - In Town St Michaels

The recently restored historic Washington Melson House, located at 206 Locust St. is a 2 bedroom vacation cottage that is a short walk from all museums, parks, restaurants, churches and shops in St. Michaels! Rates vary by season, and whether stay is weeknight or weekend. Stays of a week or longer are discounted, as are "last minute" bookings.

The house was built around 1840 by Washington Melson, a sailor, believed to be one of two individuals in Talbot County who voted for Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election of 1860. The house was originally built at only 16 feet wide but enlarged to the current width soon thereafter.

The first floor of the original portion of the Melson House includes a living room and a dining room. To the rear of the original house on the first floor is a kitchen area which opens up by French doors to an outdoor patio. Also connected to the kitchen is a large family room with a queen sleep sofa. There is a half bath off the family room.

The second floor of the original portion of the Melson house is a bedroom having two twin beds and a half bath. The second floor to the rear of the house (accessed by a different staircase than that in the original portion), contains the master bedroom having a queen size bed. There is a full bathroom off this bedroom.

Historic Charmer

This was a cute historic house very close to all shops and restaurants. Location could not be better. It could use a thorough cleaning and the shower is pretty rustic. But overall a good place to stay.

Location! Location! Location!

This was a quick getaway for my husband, me, and our 2-year-old grandson. The location of this property is perfect! We could walk over to the waterfront and watch the geese or walk into town for shopping and food. We lost power (a fluke) during our stay, and the owner was extremely responsive and easy to contact. We walked to dinner, and it was back on when we returned. Highly recommend!

Location location

Waters edge is just a few steps away to sit and watch boats come in and out. So cute and the most amazing artifacts decorating the place made it even more captivating. Short walk to coffee, food and shopping local. The owner was responsive and kind as well as super easy to work with. Will definitely return.

Wonderful return visit to St Michaels. This time at a fantastic historical home in perfect location. Home was everything you could ask for and more. Park your car and walk anywhere, within a very quiet neighborhood, yet minutes from all St Michaels offers. Highly recommend this Property and host.

Great Location but…

The listing is right in that the house is in a great location. You can walk/bike to pretty much anywhere you want to go from the house. The historic features of the house are also very cool. It is basically two cottages put together with a galley kitchen connecting them. The property however needs some love. There was a lot of marked up and peeling paint around the house that could easily be touched up to make it look cleaner. There were outlets in the house that were not working like in the kitchen near the microwave (meaning if you want to use the microwave you had to move it). There were also ants in the kitchen, but that happens this time of year and should be expected in an older home. The one full bath could have also used some love, the shower curtain bar is badly rusted and there’s loads of water proofing tape covering who knows what. Overall the bathroom could have felt cleaner. In the downstairs bathroom only one of the knobs for water works. Not a big deal, but something that should be addressed. The sheets were very worn and thin and mismatched. The pillows were completely flat (bring your own if this would bother you). The towels while I’m guessing were clean were also all different and not in the best condition. The heat also didn’t work at all for our stay so we were very cold at night.Lastly, there is NO pool as stated in the listing and I could not contact the owner at all through the app to ask about it.Overall a premium price for a just ok house.

Wonderful weekend in St. Michael’s

The house was in a perfect location to explore St. Michael’s without ever using our car. It was a charming historic cottage and we would definitely rent it again. We brought our 11 year old golden retriever and she was thrilled to meet all the people in town. Such a dog friendly place. Thank you.

Ladies ‘Runaway until Sunday’, St Michaels

Somewhat rustic; pretty; beautiful historic location. Towels need fresher, newer, more abundant. Dish towels in bathrooms were abnormal; no tissues; no extra paper towels. Temperature was well regulated; thermostat; great

The house was clean, met our needs and was in a great location. We ate and shopped in locally.

We drove to Assateague Island to see the wild horses and were rewarded by seeing a 4 day old foal. We also visited Blackwater park and saw some great birds, including a Piliated Woodpecker. The house could use at least one box of tissues., and I would be somewhat concerned about the step that is wobbly in the side entrance, Thanks for a couple of great days.

Shower note

This is a clean, beautifully decorated house within walking distance to about everything. Keep in mind the historic nature of the house, however, when using the retrofitted bathrooms. The slant-ceiling shower is a squeeze for taller folks but there's nowhere else for it to go, really. Just part of the charm of the property.

Wonderful trip

This was our annual St.Michael’s anniversary trip and it is the first time we stayed at the Melson House and it will definitely NOT be our last time. The location was great, the place was very quaint and comfortable. Very clean as well. The communication was outstanding. We read some things regarding the showers, but it really was not a big deal. We were able to bring our Golden Retriever with us which is one of the reasons we chose the Melson house. Everything worked out perfectly. It was a great value for the price. We hope to be able to return next year.

Perfect Stay for "Christmas in St. Michaels" Weekend

Staying a the Melson House was perfect for my sister and me for the annual Christmas in St. Michaels weekend. We were just a block or two away from the boat parade on the Miles River, the street parade on Talbot Street, and the Christmas marketplace and all the other activities. The house was very comfortable and quaint, and the kitchen was well out-fitted. With the permission of the owner, we had a beautiful fire in the fireplace every evening. (We stopped at Lowe's Bayshore Nursery in Stevensville and bought some well-seasoned firewood en route.) It was so enjoyable to be staying in an historic house surrounded by other historic and interesting homes. St. Michaels offers great restaurants, shops and museums, and is an incredibly friendly town. We joked that we felt like we were in a Hallmark Christmas movie!

Average Value for the Price.

This particular community is sort of Colonial Willamsbergish and it was our wish to choose accommodations that were of the period. This house only partially uses period decor, and it's sort of a mish mash in most of the rooms. The master bedroom shower was unacceptable to us and could be easily improved. There were ants in the kitchen. Generally in the kitchen and throughout the house there was a lot of junk that didn't need to be there; the contents need to be simplified and organized. The place needs an overall interior paint job and a carpenter to fix 100 things. A thorough cleaning might also be a good decision. For the moment is appears that the owner is more concerned about collecting money than making this lovely house period perfect.

Prime location, but…

Old home. Not a good renovation. Friends had to walk through our bedroom to get to the only tub/shower. Bathrooms are tiny; men must sit to use toilet. Second bedroom too hot to sleep in. Towels were mismatched and had bleach stains. Comforter in master bedroom was soiled. Chairs at table in living room had caned seats in need of repair. Exterior doors did not have deadbolt locks. Instructions for parking conflicted with need for neighbors to use their spaces. Such a shame because this house has a prime town location close to shopping, restaurants, and park. We will return to St. Michaels, but not this rental property.

Change of scenery

We love escaping to St Michaels for a change of scenery. These historic properties are great places to disconnect from our normal fast paced lifestyle. We always enjoy that our dogs are able to enjoy our stay. It’s a vacation for them as well. The town is very dog friendly in general. The properties are historic and have their quirks. For us, this adds to the experience and charm of St Michaels. The centralized location is key.

About the host

I purchased and restored the nearby Thomas Harrison House (VRBO 198445) in 1991. As my interest in the area grew, I purchased and restored the adjacent Washington Melson House as well as the Thomas Blades house (VRBO 229963), the John Bruff House (844888) and the Carpenter St Cottage (844892).

Why they chose this property

The proximity (walking distance) to the beautiful St Michaels harbor and to almost everything in Town, the quiet street location, the architecture and the historic character of the house and area. The house is also adjacent to other houses I have restored.

What makes this property unique

Walking distance to everything...harbor, parks, shops, restaurants, coffee shops, winery, museums, library, tennis courts, community pool, farmer's market etc. Patio off of the kitchen. Location in quiet historic area. Very comfortable and relaxing home.
