Number 4 Rue du Poteau is a typical Charentaise style house located in the Charente Maritime region.It is located at a 6 hour drive from the ferry at Roscoff or Cherbourg. The house is 12km form the sea on the west coast of France half way between La Rochelle and Bordeaux. It is in a rural setting in a small hamlet of houses close to the town of Cozes . It is located 16km from Royan which is a lovely seaside town that is very popular with tourists. Royan has a wonderful marina where you can hire jet skis, sailing boats or take a trip over to the left bank of the Gironde estuary to visit the famous Bordeaux wine vineyards of the Medoc. Each year in July you have a wonderful classical music festival with 3 large free open air concerts on the beach. It's called in Violon sur Sable. A quick internet search will give you all this years details.There is also an excellent zoo, golf course and a very good garden to visit. It has a fantastic market everyday where you can choose lovely cheese, wine, fish, meat and vegetables.
There are many lovely restaurants to choose from in our local village of Cozes or in the surrounding villages. You will find very helpful staff in the tourist office in Cozes. A favourite destination is Le Cottage in Vaux sur Mer and the seaside walled town of Talmond.
The 2 nearest airports are La Rochelle (1.25 hours away) and Bordeaux (1.5 hrs away)
The nearest shopping town is Cozes about 4 km from the house. This town has all the amenities you need such as shops, banks, pharmacy, swimming pool and markets on Wednesday and Saturday.

Great Base to exlpore from

Homely and comfortable gite. Lovely quiet setting. Great for the children particularly nice big garden to play in. So much to do nearby we didn't get to it all, we definitely need to come back. Great beaches, gorgeous villages to visit. Candlelit Talmont on a Tuesday night was lovely. Good supermarket nearby. Our first visit to France and we're hooked!

Relaxation at its best!

Lovely, characterful house in a beautiful location amidst vineyards and sunflower fields. The house is very well equipped and gives easy access to the nearby towns, shops and beaches. Kids loved the 'princess' bedroom upstairs. The highlight for us was the garden - very large with lots of trees to give us some shade on the very hot days we had. Kids loved the swing and the hammocks and there was plenty of room for playing games. Would certainly recommend.

Très agréable séjour

Nous avons passer deux très bonnes semaines à Grézac avec nos 3 enfants. La maison a du charme et est spacieuse., Le jardin grand et arboré est également très agréable. L'endroit est très calme mais Royan et ses pages sont assez rapidement accessibles (30 minutes de voitures). La propriétaire était très disponible par message. merci à Grace de nous avoir accueillis dans cette jolie maison de campagne où on se sent très vite chez soi !

Home from home

The gite is well situated for all the local amenities of south west France- from La Rochelle to Royan, Jonzac, cognac, Talmont etc etc. The home is a couple of miles from Cozes which has a good supermarket and a Wednesday morning market. It has one bar and a small shop and ATM facilities. The gite itself has a large rear garden and all the usual facilities. Parking is not great. There are good cooking facilities, downstairs and upstairs toilets and bathing facilities- very good shower on ground floor- although we found limited hot water in the evening. Furnishings were satisfactory for a gite. French TV and DVD. Collection of English language books. Main problem for us was lack of wifi but for some that might be an advantage. We had a very enjoyable two week holiday and the gite delivered in respect of all the essentials needed.

Adrian and I are both from Ireland. We love France and always dreamed of owing a home there. We enjoy the oudoor life but also love to read, visit historical buildings and spend time with our friends and family. We love having dinner parties where we enjoy good food and a glass of wine. Our great passion for over 40 years is flying light aircraft.(see an arial photo in the photos album of our house) In 2013 we flew a 1941 Piper J3 Cub to Pons Avy airfield which is located 30 mins from our house. We have 3 children all living outside of Ireland and 2 grandchildren.

Why they chose this property

We choose our home in France as we wanted to able to drive easily from the ferrry. It is close also to 2 airports that have flighst from Ireland and England. When we first bought the house only the downstairs part was lived in. Every year we spend time renovating a new section. We now have 3 bedrooms but there is potential for 2 more upstairs. We enjoy seeing the house develop. As we live beside the sea in Ireland we wanted to be close to beaches in France also. We have the best of both worlds as this house is in the heart of the country but only 15 km from lovely beaches. We are surrounded by vineyards , sunflowers and waving fields of corn. We have lovely helpful neighbours who look after our property while we are in Ireland.
The surrounding area offers ample scope for sightseeing. You can take a ferry from Royan tothe opposite shore of the Gironde to explore the beautiful vineyards of the Medoc or drive to Cognac to visit the the old distillery of Hennessy, Remy Martin or Martell.

What makes this property unique

Our house has beautiful oak beams and some lovely old stone features in the hall way. During our restoration we are retaining the old stone walls as much as possible while adding insulation for heat retention on the outside walls. The quiet country roads make walking and cycling very safe. Also there are ample off road paths to explore just outside the front door.
